So you would think that belly dancers should have relatively safe career choices right? I mean, come on...They are dancing...Whats the worse they are going to get, sore feet? Glitter in the eye?

NO!

After looking at the new review of ROMKA's new sword dance, I think I should go get life insurance on my wife. Easy money some would think.

These ladies are crazy!

Whats the scariest thing your dancer has done in her crazy dance career...

My boyfriend went out and performed barefoot on a stage where a previous performer had dropped her glass jar candles. Wax and bits of glass was still on the floor. Following his (and his troupe's) performance, there were a few bloody footprints across the hardwood stage.

The swords scare me. When dancers balance them on their heads/turbans, I always feel that they'll go straight to the floor and right through someone's foot!

I was under the impression that the swords weren't sharp. I mean, even dull metal from 5 plus feet can tear skin, but right on through?!?

        Ouch!

There are different swords used.....some are dull but some are ridiculously sharp...I'm talking cut a melon in half with little effort or pierce through the foot and stick to the stage sharp......

My wife dances with the ridiculously sharp and pointy kind and I hold my breath with every performance....I have images of a beheaded audience member.

              Hey and hello!

Is the sword dance under question the AMAZING sword duet that Romka did at Spirit ?? Holy freaking cow BATMAN!

I was on the edge of my seating on that one, loving every minute of it and trying to understand the beauty and danger I was seeing! I am still trying to figure out how to spin my sword with one hand while one of my very trusting students is willing to lie on the floor with me try to spin over her!

That is indeed the sword dance that Romka did. I love watching it as much as I worry while watching it :]

Does there happen to be a link to this performance? I would love to see it. I often come home with lots of bruises on my knees from floor work, have a scar on my hand from dropping a "dulled" moorish blade on it (though I wear it proudly :0). Dropped a tray at a restaurant with candles on it very close to a customer. A fan I was dancing by blew it right off my head onto the floor. When silver hits tile man does it make a racket. At least I got everyones attention. Also was dancing with hand candles ones turned them over and realized I did not pour out all the excess alcohol from it and a stream of flame was sent to the floor onto a carpet, luckily I stamped it out fast.

Safe no? But that adds to the appeal.

My wife and her troupe dance with live steel, hawkseye scimitars, They come wicked sharp Even after grinding and dulling the edges they are still formidable and the tips... yes they would hurt. My wife has only dropped her scimi once during performance (knock wood) and it did cut her a kick on the arm. Last April Fools day , they were performing and afterwards a reporter cam up to ask them "if their swords were sharp" as he was asking this question , he reached out to touch one while a dancer was walking by... *slice* , "Oh, I Guess they are"
