I publish a popular website for the field of nanotechnology. I've been the number 1 site for this field for the last 3-4 years and I'm still not making enough income from it to support myself financially.
I would love to have some ideas for how to make more money from the site. My current income producing methods are: google adwords, banner ads, 2 paid newsletters, a few affiliate products and some consulting work.
The site is www.nanotech-now.com
Thank you for your help!

Re: request for ideas
Fri, November 17, 2006 - 10:03 PMNot to be critical, but in checking out your website, it's relatively hard to follow for someone who isn't familiar with the field of nanotechnology (even for someone who is!). Speaking from a perspective heavily influenced by graphic and web design, I would recommend taking a look at your web presence, and hiring a design firm to update your not only your website but look at branding possibilities as well. Straight up, your website is hard to navigate and read. I think you could benefit from consolidating some of the information you have listed on the left hand nav bar by deciding what your you really want to highlight (i.e is it the consulting? technology monitoring? In-depth analysis? Maybe you could display a ticker for your up-to-the-minute news briefs and breaking developments in the nanosciences or a permanent graphic banner that people could link to your stories). Create some tertiary navs. I think by just improving your website, you could seriously help yourself.
Beyond that, I would recommend word of mouth, attending seminars, networking, any opportunity you have to market yourself and your business, do. If it’s not your thing and it means hiring someone (even part time) to help you with that, then it would be worth it. I think more business is gained by word of mouth than anything.
Best in your development.

Re: request for ideas
Fri, November 17, 2006 - 10:41 PMThank you! I'll talk with my design firm about your suggestions. Since nothing I have tried to date has produced reasonable cash flow, I'm at a loss as to what I should be promoting.

Re: request for ideas
Sat, November 18, 2006 - 2:22 PMSpeaking as a reasonably technology-competent person, I don't really have any quibbles about your web design. (Perhaps it's not eye-popping, but is anyone really going to pay you just for having a slick-looking site?)
In my view, the greatest shortcoming of your site is that I can't tell what it is that you actually *do* -- that is, assuming I'm convinced that you know your stuff, what can you do for me (the person reading the info, not me personally) that I should pay you for? I think that you should concentrate on highlighting the value that you can add to whatever it is you help people to do.
Hope that helps.

Re: request for ideas
Sat, November 18, 2006 - 5:03 PMThanks for the feedback. I've been trying to figure that out for a while now. Our focus from the begining was to educate and inform readers about nanotechnology and to get them involved in deciding how this technology is going to effect their lives and the lives of all of us. I have the most complete single source for information and news about nanotech yet I'm at a loss about how to make money with it.

Re: request for ideas
Tue, November 21, 2006 - 10:38 AMYou and I agree, Gary, it's hard to read & figure out what the priorities are on the website. This is where I feel a better organized web site would benefit him. It's not about having a slick looking site, the idea is to have a simple, intuitive website that people can easily navigate and understand. Good web design will lead his customers to the gold, so to speak.
I found a great resource with some tips on how to improve your website (there's a section on this website titled free tips and guides, with website marketing tips and tips on intuitive and easy navigation):
www.itwebexperts.com/index.php
Here's another website that's quite thorough and provides a lot of free information:
www.grantasticdesigns.com/tips.html
Here are a few others, backing my point on website nav and it's advantages:
www.itwebexperts.com/index.php
www.entheosweb.com/website_..._tips.asp
www.sitepoint.com/article/n...get-around
www.wowbrand.com/articles/...bsites.htm
Last but not least, examples of great websites in a variety of fields:

Best
Let us know how it goes!

I agree that we may be describing two sides of the same coin. To use your metaphor, though, what I'm trying to say is that I'm not sure what the 'gold' is (or whether there is any). If the goal is making money, I think you both have to have something worth buying (my emphasis) and it can't be too difficult to find (your emphasis, I think).
