Skirt work and ITS

Do any of your troupes incorporate skirt work into your ITS presentations?

I remember taking a skirt workshop in a class years ago, but it was more Flamenco-inspired, and less geared towards improv. I think it would look really great to incorporate some skirt flourishes into my group's ITS presentations, complete with cueing. Any brilliant brainstorms?

(Of course, I fully realize that this means my group has to wear skirts...)

I am kinda known as the skirt Queen in my troupe (Red Tent); we do indeed have an all improv skirt vocabulary which we have incorporated into our normal vocabulary. Ours was created out of some moves we learned from Gypsy Caravan and some from my years as a Ballet Folklorico dancer. I find skirts pretty easy to adapt to a improve vocabulary as long as your cues are very deliberate and easy to see.

Our troupe (Blue Lotus Tribe) also has a full vocab of skirt moves and combos for ITS. Incorporating them into the basics and existing combos isn't hard to do either if you rev up the creative juices a bit and just start dancing. A lot of our stuff was created by just goofing around in our big fluffy skirts.

costumes are inspiring! It's not so hard to think up stuff, but keeping the combos to a short count (like 8 cts.), while starting & ending on an appropriate foot :-) and also having distinct & recognizable cues... tha'ts the brainy part -

I'm hoping when I take these combos in to class next week they work well on real bodies....

Most of our skirt combos are a bit longer... 32 counts, but yeah... sometimes creating them takes a lot of trial and error and revision. There are ones we created a long time ago that we've since thrown out of our vocabulary because they just "didn't fit" in some way or another.

Wow Jaiyana, I want to thank you for the inspiration! I went down in the studio & came up with 8 skirt combos for our group improv! I don't know why I never thought of it before, we almost always wear those big tiered skirts! I'll tell the gals tonight :-) and we can start working on them in Oct.! It's gonna be a while before we perform it but if we get a youtube clip I'll be sure to post the link -

that's gonna be rough, I'm not getting detailed here because I've got to write it all out for real this week.... ugh
but of course there's skirt swirls, that's probably gonna be the 'go to' move when people are thinking what to do next - also have a combo that turns to face back & then turns to face front, got a traveling turn to the side & back, a longer combo that again uses a turn to back & turn to front but this time w/a back kick that makes the skirt flare on the turn, a little flamenco-ish 3-step pattern in place... don't make me go on please haha

We (Mahalla Tribal Fusion in Houston) have a full vocabulary of ITS Skirt moves.
We grab inspiration from EVERYWHERE! The cues must be clear b/c the fluffy skirts can make things hard to see.

            We loooove skirt!

Oh, my Florida ATS/ITS troupe did some skirt improv at our last hafla. I have video of it on a DVD, but haven't figured out how to parse it off the dvd and put it on youtube yet...

          It's a lot of fun!

Well, we've been working on the skirt moves for a few months now & got the few kinks worked out pretty well. It IS fun, everyone seems to like them, it's awesome being able to use the fabulous full skirts too. otherwise what a waste of fabric :-)
We've put most of the combos in performance now, probably soon have them all performance ready - maybe get a video clip up soon...
