Recently I've had to put together a costume for a show where I'll be playing the part of a lynx in a Native American legend. Surprisingly, it's been a really inspired process thus far. So it got me thinking...what inspires you? And I don't mean just in dance itself, what about costume, music? What inspires you to dance, create, and do what you do?
I just figured it's been WAY too quiet here, so I'd try and get things going again...so what do you think...?

This is something inspiring me to do something with it, but I don't know what. Does it seem more fast or slow tribal. -

Tue, March 11, 2008 - 11:42 AMOooo....I LOVE Voltaire. Just play it a few times over and dance to it. You'll find the right rhythm. It's really hard with stuff like that. I love that piece though!

Re: What Inspires You?
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 3:02 PMEver since I've decided to let everything be possible inspiration, I feel like my head is just crammed with ideas. Now I need to learn some things in order to bring some of those ideas into reality.
For instance, there is a book by Barbara Olson on art quilting. I don't sew at all, but I found her work to give movement to colors.

I've been lurking on the costuming tribes, marvelling at the creations I see. In my own mind, I have about three or four really great costumes, but I need a sewing mentor. I would like to learn how, but so far, I've only been able to teach myself how to do a backstitch by hand. (I don't have a sewing machine either...guess I should change that.)
I recently got a pair of those Gym X shoes that Wendy of FCBD recommends, and it's inspired me to dance more, because my feet are no longer freezing when they are bare, or I'm no longer fretting about my safety because of socks on a slippery floor. I've been practicing spins! Who knew something so small could make such a huge difference?
Music has been inspiring me, too, in many ways. I got Carolena's Bellydance instructional book that comes with an audio CD, and I love drilling and dancing to that. I'm also always coming up with baroque music that fits into a strange fusion of baroque dance and ATS/ITS. Then *that* sends me back to some baroque dance tutorials I have, and as I revisit them, I note the similarities between it and ATS, as well as the differences, and then that usually makes me think about a whole pile of other pieces of music that might be dance-worthy.
Lastly - Tribe does a pretty good job. I thought about a great costuming thing I could do when folks were chatting about tribal veilwork and posting examples. I have this Vivaldi-Four Seasons baroque-ITS tribal fusion piece worked up in my brain that would pair well with the incorporation of veils.
One other thing - I often think of how similar the creative process is in comparing a dance troupe putting on a show vs. a chamber ensemble working to put on a concert, and that fuels creativity as well. -

Re: What Inspires You?
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 11:48 AMTribe is evil when it comes to inspiration! I've got a whole bunch of costume ideas bouncing around in my head and I just can't afford to make them a reality! I really need to find someone who can make all that tribal jewelry type stuff too. I know I'd spend a small fortune, but I've got a metal allergy, so that limits how much I an wear. Besides, I've got ideas for some tribal inspired pieces that I've just never found! It's evil! I wish I could draw better so I could at least give the idea in sketch form to someone! Gah! It's so evil!
Music is a huge inspiration to me. Every once in a while, a piece of music comes up that I just HAVE to dance to. I don't know what it is about it, but I need to dance to it, and I'm not a happy person until I do. It's funny how sometimes music can become such an overwhelming compulsion for me...
