I would love to hear some of the stories ya'll have about how you became teachers/mentors and how you knew you were ready for it.
With many deep regards,
Andrea.

Re: Teaching/Mentoring Stories
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 7:23 AMApparently, this is a worrisome topic because no one is posting...
Perhaps I will repost this later with more specific questions like the ones I've been posting. I really need some help figuring out how to prepare myself for teaching in a way that is acceptable and supports the art form in a way that is graceful, powerful, meaningful and knowledgeable. I want to further this art and I'm struggling with how to best serve it. I'd like to have my community tell me what is acceptable so I know which direction to go.
I also have the same issues everyone else does with time and funding and I'm coming into this later in life, so finding the time, energy and focus with children and a 401k is interesting LOL!
I thought people's stories would help me find my way. However, I can see that might be too personal and easily judged. So, we'll tuck this one back up our sleeve and I'll mull it around and figure out what I need to know specifically.
Thanks,
Andrea. :) -

Re: Teaching/Mentoring Stories
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 7:57 AMHave you looked at the teaching tribes? There's a lot of advice there about how to know you're ready for teaching. The easy answer is always "when your teacher knows you are, too" - but for a lot of ITS folk, we don't HAVE regular instructors.

Tue, October 9, 2007 - 9:17 AMThank you! This is great!
I don't have a regular instructor. So, you nailed it in one. ;o)
I'll have a look-see at those two tribes you just mentioned. Any suggestions on what to search for?

Re: Teaching/Mentoring Stories
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 9:22 AMThis'll sound really narfy and squishy, but I recommend just browsing those two tribes, going through posts that strike you and letting your thoughts go. :)
Along those lines - one of the things that helped me decide to teach was reading & hearing other people's questions and realizing... hey, I could answer this. I wouldn't have thought that was what makes a person ready to teach until I happened upon it. -

Re: Teaching/Mentoring Stories
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 10:15 AMVery good point re: answering questions.
And I don't think it's squishy... I just went and looked and all of the questions I've been mulling over are right there in the subject lines ;o). Especially in the first tribe you mention.

Re: Teaching/Mentoring Stories
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 7:26 AMI really don't know what to share.
I can share my teachers and mentors but I don't think people look up to me as their mentor yet. I just started teaching last April and I am teaching the same format as my teacher under her guidance so my experience is quite different. What motivated me to start teaching was, I guess, for selfish reasons. I wanted to understand the dance form inside and out and teaching others really challenges you. It was a growth thing for myself, for my teachers as well, as they had to give up some of their classes to give us teachers in training a chance.
Being on your own...wow.. I commend you for trying and I know you will succeed. Whatever you are searching for, I hope you find it, Andrea. -

Re: Teaching/Mentoring Stories
Sun, November 11, 2007 - 7:38 AMThank you, J.T.! :)
Your story is just as relevant as a person striking out on her own, IMO. :)
Actually, you have the answers to my questions. What I'm looking for is what is considered important to the structure of teaching. What is the minimum we need to have in place so we can teach in a safe, thoughtful and peaceful environment? What builds confidence in teaching?
A lot of those answers are on the teaching threads April mentioned above :). I feel so blessed to have the internet. I can't imagine living without it. (Actually, I can. And it makes me sad. I'm such a geek! LOL)
Thanks again, for the kudos and the well-wishes.
:), Andrea.
