Maybe the 27th, maybe the 29th. I am finding out about all the great belly dance shows going on there that weekend, that it's hard to decide.

Then from July 2nd until July 9th I will be in Merida, Mexico. David has been invited to perform in an Improvised and Experimental Music Festival and my ass is tagging along! Hell YES!

This is the workshop I will be taking in SF ::

Suhaila Salimpour - Choreography Collective 2008

The 2008 Choreography Collective features Suhaila technique in the mornings.
In the afternoons, six instructors will teach six different choreographies with six different stylizations.
Teachers include Michelle Joyce (modern cabaret), Rashid (40's style), Rachel George (cabaret fusion), Amy Sigil (tribal fusion), Vashti (gypsy fusion) and Paulette Rees-Denis (ATS).

GOD BLESS technique! I have never been able to find a good technique teacher here in Houston so I am freaking excited to have been traveling all over the US this year to indulge myself in my dance study!

THE END . . . i will be missing you my little Renegades . . . LONG LIVE THE CARNIE COLLECTION! LONG LIVE RENEHALLA.

I love eating at several Indian restaurants on Hillcroft and was a bit surprise and intriqued when I saw the sign in front of Babe's Cabaret that said BELLY DANCERS . . . what the fuck? belly dancers at a strip club. no way! i thought it was a mistake or some one's bright idea to bring in customers.

THEN, in this week's Houston Press there is an ad for Babe's Cabaret indicating when their alleged belly dancers are performing.

Now, I love a good strip club. In fact, given the right company I love a bad one. And I love burlesque and the traditions of what came out of the "Poor Man's Vaudeville." But Babe's seems like a raunchy little place. And I wonder what "Belly Dancing" is going on there, true or false. Shit! I even love raunchy little places, but not for my beloved belly dancing! I couldn't find anything online about it.

I can't wait to check it out. Hahaha! Go get them BELLY DANCE POLICE!! I know you are out there!!

But these scenes (or phenomena – underground music is often not coming from a ‘scene’) also produce many of Houston’s most well-known musical exports (unbeknownst to most Houstonians – even in the music and “cultural arts” communities).

“They, Who Sound” will offer two sets sampling a diverse range of underground music in Houston (with a potential for visiting artists as well) in the cozy environs of Backroom (the space behind The Mink). These shows are not to be missed. These events are early, there’s a bar and it’s on the train route!

THIS IS A LONG ASS POST > > > only read it if you dare. it's my comment to Traci for trying to call out my friends Jessie and Luna for venting on their personal blogs.
-------------------------------------------
This is Traci (obi's BLOG. brought to my attention by LUNA)
For those of you who may not know, my best friend and dance partner, Nari, is someone I've known for over 12 years. We've shared good times, bad times, she was there when my son was born, I'll be in her wedding, etc etc.

Like many others who have friendships that are filled with love, we went through a period of time where we weren't friends...we both had our own demons to deal with, we transferred our personal issues as faults of the other and , being human, we said things to others that weren't always complete truth. This happens in famiies, marriages, heck-any relationship that is made up of more than one person...we've ALL been there.

Now that "the Dark Time" is past, we've rediscovered how much we mean to one another and have once again, formed a dance partnership.

However, when we decided "hey we really want to dance as a duet", she was in another troupe. But she wanted to go in a different direction from the other three dancers and so when she told them she was leaving the troupe, they said they weren't surprised by it and one of them even told Nari "Hey you need to follow your ART".

Why am I blogging about this you ask? Because these former troupemates of Nari's are waging a full out cyber harrassment of her. Everywhere she posts, they have to say something..even when it isn't in response to anything THEY say, they have to post. They have created malicious blogs about her, posted some incredibly passive (and not so passive) aggressive posts aimed at her....and without actually speaking her name, they have made it blatantly obvious they are speaking ABOUT her.

examples: people.tribe.net/afb264e1-...e5606d7017

www.flickr.com/photos/ren...2468518221/

in the above pic, she covered up my partner's image........

To those girls, I am saying-STOP. THIS. NOW. What you are doing is ugly, underhanded and pointless. It's also against the law under the Penal Code for harrassment and cyber harrassment.

To address these girls directly:
*you say I have no idea what was said about me during the "Dark Time".. Actually I do know what was said, and I was guilty of saying some not so nice things myself.
Also, I don't need you "fighting my fight" for me. None of you girls even KNOW me! I didn't ask for you to be the "outers" to anything that happened, what, a YEAR ago?!

I'm saying you need to stop this NOW. You've been asked nicely, Nari has taken the high road and not addressed you or your "claims"....it's juvenile and it needs to end before legal measures are taken. I will only address this drama with the authorities if necessary.

-------------------------------------------
This is my comment. Which i also posted at the end of her blog.

Traci,

neither Luna nor Jessie (whose posts you linked to) claim that these posts are about YOU or Melany. And people are allowed to VENT. And people CHOOSE what they read. You've got people who don't even know us thinking we are HATERS or something.

And the photo where Jess covers Melany's face isn't slandering. Jessie never liked dressing as a "twinkie" with another dancer. Look at our costumes. We are NEVER dressed alike. We each have too much style for that.

We all need to get over it.

Mel's not in Nah'na. There is no Nah'na. She left and we were more than happy to get on with our projects as much as she was happy to re-unite with you.

And any animosity that people have is their business. I know you probably still have alot to say and I am sure I do too.

But seriously, this is getting old. I mean, can't we all just get along? (hahaha! sorry, had to say it). I mean, let's say this shit in person so we can really talk SOME MAD SHIT, get over it and then see each other at the next event and i don't have to try and talk to Mel only to have her shy aways from me again.

Fuck, i know this scene is a bunch of bitchy women, but we ALL NEED to just let it go away so the next drama can happen and everyone can gasp at that bullshit.

Thanks ladies.

love,

HOT. for reals. the gore was good, the zombies were good, the tits and ass were excellent. good film! a fabulous comedy with great horror, gore, great dancing (blows any skilled stripper i have ever seen), and silly but effective, uhm, special effects.

I, Zombie was alright. well, it was good. the gore was excellent, the death and decay was extremely well done, but it was such a fucking SAPPY movie. zombie as a concious human decaying away with a hunger for human flesh . . . its was sappy. but on a cool note, the character made sure to masturbate twice in the movie and to my happy expectations pulled his penis right off! i have always wanted to see this in a zombie movie! now that's a good zombie scene! but it was sappy and sensitive with great gore.

SHORT-LIST OF 15 FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR ARTADIA AWARDS 2008 IN HOUSTON

New York, NY – The exceptional diversity and range of artists living and working in Houston was evident as three internationally prominent jurors selected the 15 Artadia Awards Finalists for this year's Houston Awards Cycle. Jurors Franklin Sirmans (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, The Menil Collection), Sue de Beer (artist, New York and Berlin), and Mark Bessire (Director, Bates College Museum of Art) named the finalists out of a record-number of more than 200 applications for the fourth Artadia Awards in Houston.

The 15 Artadia Awards Finalists are: Mequitta Ahuja, Dawolu Anderson, Sasha Dela, Katherine Heinlein, Lauren Kelley, El Franco Lee, Mary Magsamen & Stephan Hillerbrand, Lynne McCabe, Delilah Montoya, Katrina Moorhead, Floyd Newsum, Jr., Phillip Perez, Stephanie Toppin, Yvonne Torres (<--ms. YET/Y. E. Torres!!!), and Gabriela Trzebinski.

Applications for the Artadia Awards were open to visual artists in all media and at any stage of their career working and living in Harris County, Texas. The application was available online for ten weeks from January 1, 2008 to March 15, 2008. A total number of 210 applications were received in response to the open call to Houston artists.

Jennifer Gross (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Yale University), Christopher Eamon (Curator, Pamela and Richard Kramlich Collection, and Executive Director, New Art Trust), and Franklin Sirmans will visit Houston for the final jury/studio visits next month from Thursday, May 15 through Saturday, May 17, 2008. The jury will then name three artists for $15,000 awards and seven artists for $1,500 awards. The list of 10 Artadia Awardees will be announced by the end of May. An exhibition of the Awardees is scheduled for 2009 and will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue to commemorate the Artadia Awards and exhibition.

Christopher Vroom, Artadia Founder and Board President, says about Artadia's Houston Awards program: "It is particularly gratifying to be a part of Houston 's vibrant cultural community at a time of vigorous civic debate. The artists selected for this year's Artadia Awards Short List exemplify the diversity of artistic practice and perspective that makes ours a great society. They underscore the varied roles that artists play in our communities–their practice, their viewpoint, and their deep engagement in civic and educational life not only help us see the world in new ways but make us want to be involved in a positive way. It is a great gift indeed."

Of the jury process Franklin Sirmans said: "Working with Sue, Mark, and the Artadia team, we selected one snapshot of a much bigger community of artists. Testament to the quality of the art, the decisions were difficult and many of the artists not selected at this time either had been in the past or certainly would be in the future. We tried to be mindful of the many different kinds of art being made in Houston."

Artadia has long-standing close relationships with the local foundations and private patrons of the arts who recognize the importance of unrestricted funding to visual artists at the local level. Houston partners include DiverseWorks Artspace, which has hosted the Artadia Awards exhibitions in the past, as well as the Lawndale Center for the Arts, where Artadia held this year's well-attended information session in February. The Artadia Awards 2008 Houston are generously supported by the Houston Endowment, Inc., numerous generous individuals, and the Artadia Board. In addition to Houston, Artadia administers successful programs and awards in Boston, San Francisco, and Chicago.

Jozef van Wissem (Holland) - renaissance lute

YOU KNOW YOU WANNA GO TO A FREE CONCERT WITH A RENAISSANCE LUTE!!!

When: Wednesday, January 30 , 2008 at 8 pm

Where: A site-specific performance at
The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum
4011 Yupon at Branard, Houston, TX (map)

Tickets: The concert is free of charge

Nameless Sound and The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum, in cooperation with The Menil Collection, presents:
Tetuzi Akiyama (Japan) - acoustic guitar
Jozef van Wissem (Holland) - renaissance lute

An artist of starkly contrasting styles, Tetuzi Akiyama gained international recognition as a member of Tokyo's "onkyo" scene of improvisers in the late 1990s. A groundbreaking and highly influential group, the onkyo musicians are known for zen-like subtlety, quietness and a remarkable use of silence. Akiyama's music can have these qualities, but his connections to blues and folk have always been clear. His acoustic performances are delicate, beautiful and expressive, often sounding like an intersection between country blues and traditional Japanese music.

Jozef van Wissem probably plays the most unlikely instrument in the world of contemporary improvised music: the Renaissance lute. He has accomplished the strange feat of bridging the idiom of seventeenth century lute literature and twenty-first century free improvisation. Van Wissem has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute. Van Wissem first came to be noticed a few years ago because of his conceptual approach to Renaissance lute music: he deconstructed existing compositions, for instance, by playing them backwards. He also composed his own pieces for lute, using palindromes and mirrored structures. His music therefore does not have a traditional linear progression, nor does it lead to a climax; rather, it stays at the same level of intensity. His music is quiet. It doesn't so much demand concentrated listening, but it brings the listener into a state of concentrated listening—an aspect that makes Van Wissem a natural partner to Akiyama's zen-like blues.

The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum was opened in February 1997. Intimate in scale, the Chapel Museum is the repository in the United States for the only intact Byzantine frescoes in the entire western hemisphere. These masterworks from the 13th century—a dome and an apse—were stolen out of a chapel near Lysi in the Turkish occupied section of Cyprus in the 1980s, cut into pieces and smuggled off the island by thieves prepared to sell them piece by piece. The fresco fragments were rescued from the thieves by The Menil Foundation with the knowledge and approval of the Church of Cyprus, the rightful owner of the frescoes. The Menil Foundation then funded a painstaking two-year restoration of the paintings. Numerous private donors helped fund the construction of the Chapel Museum, which combines rough stone, opaque glass and rich woods to extraordinarily spiritual effect. The Church of Cyprus is allowing a long-term loan of the frescoes in the building designed especially for them by architect François de Menil.

8pm
Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex
2201 Preston, Houston TX

The work of Cooper-Moore is a testament to commitment, vision, spirit, compassion, and invention. Born and raised in the Piedmont Area of the Virginian Blue Ridge Mountains, Cooper-Moore played piano in churches as a child prodigy. In the early 1970's he moved to New York, and began his association with the fertile and revolutionary "loft scene" of underground jazz, collaborating with such musicians as David S. Ware, Marc Edwards, and William Parker. An accomplished composer and virtuosic piano player, Cooper-Moore quit public performance in 1981, depriving the creative music world of a unique and vital talent. He dedicated himself to youth, working intensively with a variety of communities. He has developed and implemented his own music curriculum; and has been sent around the country by Head Start to teach it to others. For the last 25 years, Cooper-Moore has assisted the disabled, the incarcerated, the at-risk, and the underserved; affecting them with his passion and understanding of personal and community progress through creative work.

In the early 90's, Cooper-Moore returned to public performance and was discovered by a new generation of fans. His unique talents were a revelation. He is a renaissance man, whose performances encompass honest and insightful storytelling, wide-ranging explorations on hand-made instruments, and intensely virtuosic piano playing.
Nameless Sound is committed to a vision of personal and community growth through creative music. Creative music is an ideal context to address group awareness, self-awareness, empowerment, vulnerability, and diversity. The skills developed through musical improvisation emphasize listening, creativity, spontaneity, dialogue, and self-expression.

Nameless Sound Youth Ensemble
The Ensemble plays creative music through the process of musical improvisation. Participants may come from any musical background. The process accepts the input of any musical tradition (as well as music that is from no tradition at all). Students of any skill level may participate. The ability to read music is not a prerequisite. Visual artists, poets, actors, and practitioners of other artistic disciplines may participate if they have an interest in performance. Participants will have an opportunity to compose for the group or lead the group. The 6-week session will culminate in a public performance.

Creative Kids Ensemble
The Creative Kids Ensemble will explore the joy of music making in a fun, positive, and affirming environment. Sound, rhythm, singing, drumming, and musical story-telling will be used to explore coordination, listening, leadership, creativity, group-awareness, and self-awareness. Instruments are provided. Children are encouraged to bring their own instruments as well.

Classes for People with Special Needs
Nameless Sound explores music making for the special needs community. In an encouraging and structured environment, participants will engage in musical exercises that emphasize listening, coordination, peer support, self-expression, self-empowerment, and non-verbal communication. Instruments are provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments, too.
