Leah, and other yogi-folkis... a question for you.
In Stick pose (lying face down, arms bent in at sides, hands at shoulder height), I get the wackiest sensation of tightness in my right elbow. It happens along the inside of my arm, and it doesn't feel tight all the way down - just around the elbow, a little above and below. It feels as if there's a rubber band or something in there that is being pulled too tightly. This doesn't happen on my left side.
I have scoliosis, and I know it effects my upper back muscles on my right side (spine curves to right, centered around T11 and T12), particularly my serratus muscle group. Is some tightness there causing this reflective tension in my elbow? I can feel it often throughout the day, such as when I'm typing with elbow bent at the keyboard, but it is most pronounced in Stick pose when I bend my arms and try to tuck them right along my sides.
What can I do to loosen this up? It's not sharp and painful, but it is certainly very uncomfortable and distracting.

Re: Yoga question! Tense elbow in Stick pose
Mon, October 29, 2007 - 9:47 AMNamaste Bo,
I would explore what you're feeling in the pose and see if you can make adjustments to the alignment. Also, notice what type of movement patterns or repetative stress might be causing that specific tightness or weakness. Show me the pose when you see me next and I'll see if I can make some more specific suggestions :-) -

Re: Yoga question! Tense elbow in Stick pose
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 4:16 PMI will, thank you Leah.
It seems to become more comfortable if I put my elbow out away from my body - really far, almost until my arm is at a 90 degree angle to my body.

Re: Yoga question! Tense elbow in Stick pose
Thu, December 27, 2007 - 3:55 PMI found out what it was, in case anyone else experiences this or asks this question: my ulnar nerve was irritated. I work with my elbows bent all day, and it rubbed on the armrest of my desk chair. I took off the arm rests and bingo - problem solved!
