In Stick pose (lying face down, arms bent in at sides, hands at shoulder height), I get the wackiest sensation of tightness in my right elbow. It happens along the inside of my arm, and it doesn't feel tight all the way down - just around the elbow, a little above and below. It feels as if there's a rubber band or something in there that is being pulled too tightly. This doesn't happen on my left side.

I have scoliosis, and I know it effects my upper back muscles on my right side (spine curves to right, centered around T11 and T12), particularly my serratus muscle group. Is some tightness there causing this reflective tension in my elbow? I can feel it often throughout the day, such as when I'm typing with elbow bent at the keyboard, but it is most pronounced in Stick pose when I bend my arms and try to tuck them right along my sides.

What can I do to loosen this up? It's not sharp and painful, but it is certainly very uncomfortable and distracting.

Toosley recalls. "Not really--I could hardly walk." With her hamstring muscle snapped, Toosley, 32, avoided yoga for the next three months, and almost a year later, she is still in pain.

Bad-mouthing yoga seems like begging for a hit of unfavorable karma. But with more than 14 million people practicing yoga or tai chi nationwide, up 136% since 2000, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and chiropractors across the country are dealing with the increasing fallout from yoga gone awry. Over the past three years, 13,000 Americans were treated in an emergency room or a doctor's office for yoga-related injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Often people get hurt because they assume that yoga is simple and that anybody can pretzel himself or herself on demand. Edward Toriello, an orthopedic surgeon and spokesman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, says most of the injuries he sees are sustained by "weekend warrior" baby boomers who begin yoga without realizing that their bodies are no longer what they used to be. "They think that yoga is an easy way to start exercising, so they go to class once a week, not stretched out at all, and they get hurt."

At the same time, others see yoga--a practice originally conceived to help people achieve inner peace and tranquillity--as a way to get a vigorous workout. More than five times as many people take yoga classes at health clubs today as did a decade ago, and enthusiasts have devised all kinds of variations appalling to purists: hip-hop yoga, disco yoga, power yoga, not to mention controversial hot yoga, or Bikram, which incites people to push themselves to their limit in sweltering rooms in which temperatures are set at 105ºF (41ºC).

The truth is, yoga, regardless of the form, doesn't offer a comprehensive way to get fit. According to a study by the American Council on Exercise, a national nonprofit organization that certifies fitness instructors and promotes physical fitness, dedicated yoga practitioners show no improvement in cardiovascular health. It's not the best way to lose weight either. A typical 50-min. class of hatha yoga, one of the most popular styles of yoga in the U.S., burns off fewer calories than are in three Oreos--about the same as a slow, 50-min. walk. Even power yoga burns fewer calories than a comparable session of calisthenics. And while yoga has been shown to alleviate stress and osteoarthritis, it doesn't develop the muscle-bearing strength needed to help with osteoporosis.

Part of the problem is that increasingly, the people teaching yoga don't know enough about it. Yoga was traditionally taught one-on-one by a yogi over a period of years, but today instructors can lead a class after just a weekend course. Though the Yoga Alliance, formed in 1999 and now based in Clinton, Md., has set a minimum standard of 200 hours of training for certification, only 16,168 of the estimated 70,000 instructors in the U.S. have been certified. "Yoga means bringing together mind, body and spirit, but in Western yoga, we've distilled it down to body," says Shana Meyerson, an instructor in Los Angeles. "That's not even yoga anymore. If the goal is to look like Madonna, you're better off running or spinning." Namaste to that.

International Herald Tribune|Opinion; Published: May 7, 2007
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/05/07/opinion/edmehta.php

I grew up watching my father stand on his head every morning. He was doing sirsasana, a yoga pose that accounts for his youthful looks well into his 60s. Now he might have to pay a royalty to an American patent holder if he teaches the secrets of his good health to others.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued 150 yoga-related copyrights, 134 patents on yoga accessories, and 2,315 yoga trademarks. There's big money in those pretzel twists and contortions - $3 billion a year in America alone. It's a mystery to most Indians that anybody can make that much money from the teaching of a knowledge that is not supposed to be bought or sold like sausages.

The Indian government is not laughing. It has set up a task force that is cataloging traditional knowledge, including ayurvedic remedies and hundreds of yoga poses, to protect them from being pirated and copyrighted by foreign hucksters. The data will be translated from ancient Sanskrit and Tamil texts, stored digitally, and available in five international languages, so that patent offices in other countries can see that yoga didn't originate in a San Francisco commune.

It is worth noting that the people in the forefront of the patenting of traditional Indian wisdom are Indians, mostly overseas. We know a business opportunity when we see one and have exported generations of gurus skilled in peddling enlightenment for a buck. But as Indians, they ought to know that the very idea of patenting knowledge is a gross violation of the tradition of yoga.

In Sanskrit, "yoga" means "union." Indians believe in a universal mind - brahman - of which we are all a part, and which ponders eternally. Everyone has access to this knowledge.

Knowledge in ancient India was protected by caste lines, not legal or economic ones. The term "intellectual property" was an oxymoron: the intellect could not be anybody's property. Perhaps it is for this reason that Indians do not feel obligated to pay for knowledge. Pirated copies of my book are openly sold on the Bombay streets, for a fourth of its official price. Many of the plots and the music in Bollywood movies are lifted wholesale from Hollywood.

Still, Indians get upset every time they hear reports - often overblown - of Westerners' stealing their age-old wisdom through the mechanism of copyright law. The fears may be exaggerated, but they are widespread and reflect India's mixed experience with globalization.

Western pharmaceutical companies make billions on drugs that are often first discovered in developing countries. But herbal remedies like bitter gourd or turmeric, which are known to be effective against everything from diabetes to piles, earn nothing for the country whose sages first isolated their virtues. The Indian government estimates that worldwide, 2,000 patents are issued a year based on traditional Indian medicines.

Drugs and hatha yoga have the same aim: to help us lead healthier lives. India has given the world yoga for free. No wonder so many in the country feel that the world should return the favor by making lifesaving drugs available at reduced prices, or at least letting Indian companies make cheap generics. If the lotus position belongs to all mankind, so should the formula for Gleevec, the leukemia drug over whose patent a Swiss pharmaceuticals company is suing the Indian government.

For decades, Indian law allowed its pharmaceutical companies to replicate Western-patented drugs and sell them at a lower price to countries too poor to afford them otherwise. In this way, India supplied half of the drugs used by HIV-positive people in the developing world.

But in March 2005, the Indian Parliament, under pressure to bring the country into compliance with the World Trade Organization's rules on intellectual property, passed a bill declaring it illegal to make generic copies of patented drugs.

This has put life-saving antiretroviral medications out of reach of many of the nearly 6 million Indians who have AIDS. Yet the very international drug companies that so fiercely protect their patents oppose India's attempts to amend World Trade Organization rules to protect its traditional remedies.

There's more at stake than just the money. There is also the perception that the world trading system is unfair, that the deck is stacked against developing countries. If the copying of Western drugs is illegal, so should be the patenting of yoga. It is also intellectual piracy, stood on its head.

Suketu Mehta is the author of "Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found."
Western governments are granting patents, trademarks, and copyrights over yoga to con-artists who claim to have invented the millennia-old practice. The Indian government is retaliating by publishing a giant, multi-lingual database of yoga-stuff so that patent examiners can see that "yoga didn't originate in a San Francisco commune."
facinated by African and aboriginal tribes that dance around the fire for community ritual and marking the milestones of one's life. I love Pow Wows with the constant pounding off the drums and feet as the circle moves and undulates. I love that music and dance are something that brings people together in peace and acceptance. Much of Western society is so performance driven. We have all kinds of hangups, judgements and internal pressures about what others think. Yoga is about giving our minds and egos a break. Lighten up! and dance....
First Movement happens Fri. Jan.26, 8-10pm at Shanti Yoga 907 Howe Ave. (Howe & Northrup).

Drishti refers to the gaze point within a yoga posture, fixing the gaze in one place to direct the alignment and still the mind. The eyes are a relection of the mind, the more steady the eyes the more steady the mind. When there's a lot of activity in the mind the eyes tend to flit about, if you want to quiet down the mind, you can start by focusing the eyes and stilling the body. The drishti is much more than just the physical gaze point, it is also your mental focal point, your intention. What is your vision? Where are you headed? Are you focused on and moving in the direction of your passions, aspirations and purpose? We are constantly exposed to stimulation of our senses, bodies and minds. It's difficult to not become distracted as we race in circles for some distant finish line. We put endless preasure on ourselves to do more, but are we really doing what we want with our lives or are we just trying to make it through the day. Having a solid drishti not only means being very clear about what it is you wish to manifest in your life, but also having the unwavering determination and will to follow it through. The how of getting there is not always clear, like a sailor navigating the sea, you can know where your headed but there's no way of knowing what storms or detours may arrise. However, if you keep changing destinations, it becomes difficult to ever get anywhere. Choose where you are going, not what others tell you to do, not just what you ended up with even if it's not fullfilling. Listen to your heart, pick your destination, focus your eyes and go for it without distraction or discouragement. The journey is a short one. Before you know it all has past, so while being firm with your vision, be flexible with how you get there and enjoy the ride!

There is an amazing movie circulating out there called The Secret. What's the Secret? It's all about The Law of Attraction. This is the fundamental law of creating your life with intention. Simply put; like attracts like. What and how you think and believe is exactly what you get. I've known this for some time and yet it's only through regular practice that I can see when and where I'm not applying this principle. It's easy to get caught up in focusing on becoming, which is another way of holding your attention where you are not. The mind doesn't distinguish between thoughts you like or are positive to your creation and the ones that are destructive. The mind and indeed the universe just responds to what and how you think most often and gives you more of the same. If your thoughts dwell on the things you don't want, you get more of the same. So if you consciously choose what it is you want to create in your live, that is exactly what you get. It sounds simple, but like most things it takes practice.
So how do you know what to create in your life. You can tell if you're riding your personal creative flow by how you feel. This is where our emotions are messengers to let us know if we are thinking and acting in harmony with what we truly want. Whereever you feel badly; anger, jealousy, loneliness, frustration these are a reflection of what you are attracting. The more you focus on these feelings the stronger they become (like attracts like). When you notice these feelings arise, turn them upside down. It's only when you change the thought, will it change on the outside. This is empowering. You can manifest any hope, dream or desire from the inside out.

Karma is an interesting thing. People talk alot about it. Often looking at aspects of their life as either the good or bad deeds from a past life. Karma simply means action. It refers to the universal law that every action creates a reaction. Each thought, word or deed creates an effect. The thing to remember is that like all universal laws, such as gravity, there is no emotion attached to it. Emotion is the domain of humanity, it's our gage to see where we're at, but doesn't apply to universal laws or inert objects. Gravity doesn't decide it's pissed about something you said or did and makes you 10 pounds heavier (so don't blame gravity). Karma isn't about punishment, retribution or reward. It is just the result of whatever action is taken; cause and effect. Some effects are instantaneous and others last for a long time. All that matters is what you are doing now. You can't change past actions but you can choose new ones. This is the empowering aspect of karma, if we change the action, we change the reaction. So if you want to break karmic patterns (continuing to choose the same action, even though you don't like the result), you must change the cause that's creating the effect. You don't have to wait until next lifetime (although some will) and you don't have to be resigned to the karma created from a past life. Drive your karma, don't let it drive you.

He told me that it was not as useful to renounce or repress desires as it is to explore, understand and learn to master them. He has a wonderful way of relating his lessons to food, I think one of the desires he strives to master. He said " If you love Burfi (a delicious Indian sweet of pure butter, sugar and milk) then your mind will be on Burfi. And if you say I will not eat Burfi, then the mind wants it even stronger. The work of the yogi is to taste, enjoy, but be able to control the desire." This made perfect sense to me. I see examples of it all around me, take diets and religion, where repressing only leads to unhealthy bingeing of food or "sin". Buddha was a yogi, he learned this and made it the Middle Path to Enlightenment. From your center you can see both sides. Life is the way. The more you explore, the more you develop independant thought and knowledge based on experience and experimenting rather than the truths of others, the richer your life becomes. I'm not talking about mindless hedonism, I mean the mindful exploration of the pleasures and pains that give life texture and meaning.

The woman replies " What about love?". To this the guru says " Did you come all the way up here to give me a hard time? "

Hmmmmm. What about love? Is it not the greatest energy and gift we share? Why would we need to moderate it? I'm curious what you think. Here are my thoughts...

Love is the one thing that should not be moderated. It should abundantly flow, untainted and unattached. Unattached is the trouble-spot. Can we experience love simply for the joy it brings without connecting it to some outside object or person? I have not figured out how to skillfully do this, even though I know it to be the best way to experience love. Love with attachment is unstable. It supposes that the object of our affection will always return our love (just the way we like it) and be there to make us happy or that life without this object or person would be miserable. This kind of feeling leads us to do all kinds of crazy things to attain, control and keep the object of our love. This is what must be moderated, not the love itself. I have found no difficulty in giving up my attachment to things. Stuff comes and goes. Being liberated of the attachment to people, while still letting the love flow is the biggest challenge yet. Love is my drug and I need a fix, but I have no supplier. I guess I'll have to make it myself.

Life is an evolutionary process. Movement and change are constant, even at the most subtle levels. We plant seeds (dreams, aspirations, good karma, ideas, intentions...) and create a vision of their fruit. When we plant the seed, we have no way of knowing for sure if it will survive or how it will mature. This is because the conditions we maintain for the seed determines it's outcome. Like with any garden, we must tend the soil, remove the weeds, provide aireation, fertilizer, water and loving attention. Neglected seeds do not grow. Of course, it's very difficult to maintain all the seeds we sow ( we plant them all day long, sometimes without even noticing) some will perish to allow us to nourish others. The seed (dream, aspiration, karma, idea, intention...) will evolve into whatever it's meant to be, directed by the enviroment you create for it.

Yoga homework: Notice throughout the day the seeds you sow with thought, word and deed. Pay attention to the health of your garden and see if you can be deliberate about the things you manifest in your life, without attachment to the fruit.

Yoga is a method of healing and aligning the body, mind and spirit. Aligning the body means going to the foundation, the skeleton. Our bones are the framework, they are the support for the structure. When creating alignment within an asana (yoga posture) or your daily posture and movement, think from the bones out. Our muscles hold the bones in place and create movement, if the muscles are tight in certain areas they can hold our body out of alignment, meaning our structure is less stable and pain and tension result. Some good places to check how your bones are stacking up is in the legs, hips, spine, neck and shoulders. Sometimes in a yoga posture you may know the alignment, but your body may not be able to get there yet because of limitations in the muscles. That's OK, keep working in the right direction and eventually the body will get there.

Aligning the mind is a more challenging task. It means looking at the foundations of your thinking, behavior and belief systems. There is an invisible structure to our minds, this framework is created by social, familial and experiential conditioning. It's the way we conveniently identify, label, judge and interact with our outer and inner worlds. It's the way we see ourselves and how we look at others. This framework is important in holding our connection with the world around us, but it can sometimes become very ridged and limiting. Aligning the mind requires asking yourself questions and being completely honest with the answers. What is the root of our thinking and how does it effect our words, actions and relationships? What patterns do we need to change in our lives? We have all the answers within us, but often lack the fortitude to be honest with ourselves and do something about it. Could we drop our mental structure and allow our mind to expand infinately? That is one of the objectives of yoga.

Yoga homework: Get in touch with your skeleton, especially the spine, and notice how it stacks up throughout the day. Notice your mental framework. Without judgement or emotion, question your belief systems and the patterns within your thinking, words and deeds. Don't be afraid to let go of the things that don't work.

Breathe in....Breathe out. This is the cycle of life. Buddhist philosophy reminds us that each breath we take is one closer to our last. This isn't meant to be frightening, although if you think about your mortality for awhile, you'll notice how the mind struggles when facing the inevitable. The important thing is not our death but our life, death is certain but what we make of our life and every breath we take is up to us. If death is the destination, then we better enjoy the journey.

The breath is an amazing tool. Deep breath calms the nervous system, releases stress and clears the mind by nourishing the brain. Ujjayi Breath (a gentle constriction at the top of the windpipe to regulate the air flow and give the breath a sound), creates heat in the body, strengthens the repiratory system and gives power and endurance. Alternate nostril breathing calms the nervous system, balances the left and right brain and our Solar (masculine) and Lunar (feminine) energies. There are even breath exercises for cooling the body. These are simple techniques we all can employ; anytime, anywhere. The key is to breathe with awareness and experiment to feel how the breath effects your mind and body.

Something that helps me is to remember that the lungs and heart work together. If I want to increase my heart rate I will use movement and Ujjayi breath, if I want to decrease my heart rate (to reduce stress or anxiety, or increase endurance during physical exertion) I slow down my breath, making it smooth and deep. Our breath rate is our heart rate. When you strengthen your lungs, you strengthen your heart. And when you breathe space into the closed or blocked areas of your body, you can feel your heart open and heal.

The breath is a gift. Savor each one until the last......

Namaste,

Along the path many bumps and cracks in the road appear. Obstacles of all shapes and of sometimes daunting magnitudes manifest before us. This is truly the nature of life. It is the challenges in life that give us the chance to demonstrate courage and perseverence.

Some gifts arrive in a thorny wrapper. While some may discard the present rather than deal with the prickly covering, other's look closely determining the best way to open the package and then endure the pain to get inside. This applies to our selves, as well as, our experiences. The journey within is certain to require navigating a few bramble bushes. The gift is a reward beyond imagination. The gift is the journey....the process and all that unfolds from it.

My neice Amber has been given a thorny gift and her courage inspires me. She recently underwent brain surgery for Chiari Malformation. Basically, they cut a small triangular hole in her skull to access the brain, then shrunk the brain tonsils which were inpinging the flow of her spinal fluid causing acute scoliosis. The thought of such a procedure is frightening for anyone, imagine being 8. Amber has taught me the meaning of life, from the moment she was born and I held her in my arms to the moments my mind dared to think of losing her. The surgery was a success, but the healing process will be long and certainly difficult at times. Her strength has renewed me. Her delicate frame surrounding the largest heart I've known reminds me of what it means to be a peaceful warrior, a warrior for love. There is no sweeter gift than the feeling of her small hand in mine, even in dark moments there is light. I know that the ripple effects of this experience will continue. It has changed me as a teacher and student of life... It has shown me the value of holding a positive perspective, looking for the lessons rather than looking to blame or sinking into self pity. It gave me the chance to practice yoga and what a gift to see Amber using breath work, meditation and visualization to help with her fears, pain and healing process.

A thorny gift indeed.

Namaste to those alone this Valentine's Day,

I have been reflecting lately on feelings of loneliness. Most of us have experienced periods of loneliness at some point and know it can be a terrible place to dwell. I have found my mind tormenting my self-esteem. Focusing on a feeling of lacking, rather than abundance, feeling unattractive or unloved. It's interesting to notice how polarized our thinking can become. Our perspective shrinks and everything around us seems to support and feed our negative feelings. Of course, these feeling are inaccurate. We all have people who love us for who we are. Periods of solitude are a chance to reconnect and develop a loving relationship with ourselves. So if you don't have a partner this Valentine's Day, know that it's OK. Be kind to yourself, be loving with yourself. If you rest your happiness or value on outside sources or people, you are sure to be disappointed. If you can love yourself, you will never feel unloved.

I happened to open a book by Pema Chodron this morning and the first page I saw was titled Cool Loneliness. It was a wonderful message for me and I want to share.

"Cool loneliness allows us to look honestly and without agression at our own minds. We can gradually drop our ideas of who we think we ought to be, or who we think we want to be, or who we think other people think we want to be or ought to be. We give it up and just look directly with compassion and humor at who we are. Then loneliness is no threat and heartache, no punishment. Rather than persecuting yourself or feeling that something terribly wrong is happening, right there in the moment of sadness and longing. could you relax and touch the limitless space of the human heart?

Love and prana,

There is an amazing book called Path of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. The story is based on his life and lessons, written in novel form. His books encompass the philosophies of Tao, martial arts, yoga, Zen and other paths of open spiritual practice and how the apply to everyday life.

I firmly believe in being a peaceful warrior. It's about living the practice of courage with compassion, strength with softness, head with heart....
I learned alot about what fighters call "heart" in my years of martial arts training. It is steadfast determination, against the odds, when you've been knocked down six times and get up seven. It's about getting punched in the nose so hard your eyes water and your face stings, but never letting down your guard or hesitating. It's also about being fully present. You can't know what an opponant will do, or what difficulties in life might arise until it happens. By being fully engaged in the moment it's easier to choose the right counter manouver or response. Life is like that. It may seem dramatic. As a twenty year old, I had to learn these lessons with blood, sweat and tears. I faced my fears and ego in the ring, and even as a peaceful yogini, the same lessons and challenges apply.

The following is an excerpt from No Ordinary Moments by Dan Millman:

Peaceful warriors have three great treasures: simplicity, patience and compassion.
Simple in actions and in thoughts, they return to the source of Being. Patient with both friends and enemies, they live in harmony with the way things are. Compassionate toward themselves and others, they make peace with the world.

What other qualities do you think are important to the peaceful warrior? How do you embody your warrior spirit?

I'm wondering what ideas and interpretations come up...

Here are my thoughts. This is a beautiful representation of the balance in the universe. There's the masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) qualities in a backward embrace. They also embody the light and dark nature that is always striving for balance within all of us. One cannot exist without the other. Although they are one, they are separated. There is an underlying yearning to unite, to blend harmoniously, a deep wish to turn the backward embrace into a melting hug. When this happens, it is yoga (union). All energy disolves into itself and nothing is separate.

I find this to be true of all things, but can really relate to it with my yoga/spiritual practice. Love and laughter are the greatest healers. It's easy to get wrapped up in taking ourselves, others and life way too seriously. Opening your heart and laughing often provides nourishment on the quest to higher places and it makes the journey much more enjoyable.

If you have a good joke related to yoga or spirituality please post. Here's a couple of my favorites:

Three yogis are doing meditation in a remote cave. One day a sound is heard outside the cave. After about six months, one of the yogis says,
" Did you hear that goat?" Once again there was silence. About a year later, one of the other yogis says, " That wasn't a goat, it was a mule." Again there was silence. About two years later the third yogi says, " If you two don't stop arguing, I'm leaving."

What did the sign in the window of the yoga studio say?

My favorite dream is when I'm able to leap over the trees and fly through the air, soaring over mountains, gliding over the ocean like a seagull. It gives me a geniune feeling of freedom. Life without gravity. I'm always disappointed to wake up and realize it was a dream. Maybe it was real.

My least favorite dream is when I feel I'm being chased by a bad guy and no matter what I do I can't stop him. I kick him as had as I can in the balls and nothing. I stab him in the eye with a fork, still there menacing. I run but seem to get nowhere. It's a dream of fear and frustration and I feel it as real as when I'm flying. I havn't had this dream for many years. A reflection of my own growth and new found fearlessness.

What are your favorite and worst dreams and what do they mean to you?

Fear is the root of so much of our suffering. It leads to anger, jealousy, greed, depression, anxiety etc... Most fear is not real though. It is an imaged experience, totally different from encountering real danger. We become afraid of what people will think, afraid of what might happen, afraid to try, afraid of loss...fear becomes a barrier. It distorts our view, so we see from a place of expaectations and holding back.

I used to be terrified of public speaking and performing. But I kept facing my fear and pushing myself forward until the fear subsided. The only way to see fear for what it really is, is to face it square on. Look at it, stare it down and watch it shrink.

Fear doesn't just go away, but the more you look at it, the less power it has.

I still deal with fear of failure and yet I don't let it stop me from trying new things or taking a chance. In fact, I challenge myself contantly. I have failed before and yet here I am, stronger because of it. It's never as bad as you could imagine.

What do you think? What are you afraid of?

Vinyasa means thread. In Vinyasa Flow Yoga, sun salutations become the thread that connects asanas (postures). In this fluid practice, movement is guided by the breath. A beautiful dance to the breath.

Ujjayi breath and movement creates heat in the body from the inside out. Even iron will bend if it's hot enough. This powerful breath also cleanses the body through respiration and perspiration. The sound of the breath becomes a meditation point.

The posture sequences create strength, flexibility and balance throughout the entire body and mind.

Move with joy and awareness.

The essense of yoga is self-realization through exploration. The process of yoga shows us where we're at and allows us to observe ourselves without judgement, both physically and mentally. From this place of acceptance and contentment, our lives flow with poise and grace. Even the challenges are met with a sense of clarity and calm. We can embrace these difficult times as our greatest opportunities for growth and change.

So, I've just really started taking yoga seriously (although I say seriously with a sly smile), and I've been wondering about social notions and misconceptions, as well as what ideas a beginning student needs to access her first fruits...

Why not go right to the community good book, Webster's New World Dictionary, to get started?

The word "Yoga" comes from the Sanskrit word for "union", literally "a yoking".

One who practices yoga is called a "yogi" or "yogin"
The related adjective is "yogic"

1. a mystic and ascetic Hindu discipline by which one seeks to achieve liberation of the self and union with the supreme spirit or univeral soul through intense concentration, deep meditation, and practices involving prescribed postures, controlled breathing, etc.

2. a system of exercising involving the posters, breathing, etc practiced in this discipline

So that is Webster's definition. I have yet to read all of this, but here is the link to Wikipedia's more in-depth take: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoga

I'm interested in how these definitions, guidelines, and shoulds/coulds/musts truly apply.

Can you dance like nobody's watching? Can you set your body and spirit free? It sounds easy, but is it.

In ancient cultures all over the world, dance has been a way to celebrate, to connect with the community, attract a mate, call the rain or mark a special time in one's life.

Dance is our natural state. Movement is organic, it's necessary. It's not about how it looks, it's about how it feels. If it feels beautiful, how could it not radiant beauty.

Dance and music are important elements of yoga. They help us to move beyond the self, ego. When we can find that place of complete surrender, it's an ecstatic experience. Bliss radiates from within.

Are we willing to let go? What holds us back?
