Class is resuming!!!

I will be resuming classes on Wednesday, March 25th from 6:30-7:30pm.
The classes will now be held in a private studio on Central Avenue in Old Jefferson.

The physical address is 225 Central Avenue and here are some directions:
From Jefferson Highway, you want to turn onto Central Avenue heading towards the river (river road).
After you cross over South Street (the only cross street)...look for a peach/gold/apricot stucco house on the left - 5th on the left.
Turn into that driveway and drive through the wooden gated fence to the rear of the house for parking.

Classes are $12.00 each or you may purchase a 4 class card for $40.00.

What we're up to lately...

We're getting ready to dance at a Sci Fi Convention (Coast Con) at the Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi!
We'll be doing a steampunk set on Saturday, March 21st. Be on the lookout for video and pics afterwards!

Then we're back in the studio to resume Dramarama 16 practices.
Dramarama will be held on June 13th this year!!!
We don't want to tell the theme/details...but we will tell you that it will be fun, baudy and have a little bit of gender bending in it!
Oh, it involves wine/liquor too!!!!!!! ;)

We'll be back at Phoenicia in Metairie dancing on April 18th, 8-10pm.

Nov 2-3: Indudala Tribe in Tallahassee!

In June of this year I was able to visit NOLA to attend a workshop hosted by this lovely duet and am DELIGHTED to bring them to Tallahassee for a two day workshop! Please join us and enjoy two days of dance and three dance classes with this lovely duet!

On Saturday we will have Swishing Skirts, followed by a lunch break and then Enchanting and Fluid followed by a coffee break (provided!) and then a DIY The lowdown on Makeup Tribal Makeup Session.

Sunday we will have a Bhangra Fusion class with Indudala's variations on Bhangra!

This workshop is limited to 30 participant so preregistration is highly recommended. We will not be exceeding the room capactity so please register ASAP!

ATS Wars

I want to get a feel for the communities interest in this topic. I've been asked to consider writting an article about what I am referring to as "the ATS Wars"... or to be more technical, who is ATS and who isn't... or to get right to the point... are tribal dancers outside the FCBD-ATS box ATS?, or a rose by another name?

First and foremost I want to know... Is this important to you?
If not, I ask that you respond with "this means nothing to me" or something along those lines. I want to see how realivant the topic is to the community as a whole, as well as to the individual.

Who out there uses the term ATS to describe their troupe, but does not stick strictly to the FCBD-ATS formate?

Have you experienced anyone being judgemental to you using the term ATS? Would you share your story?

...and if this topic matters to you, I would like to invite you to share your defences/arguement/references for ATS being either an umbrella term, or a clearly definded and limited set of moves & rules.

I have posted this here as well, cause I want to know what Kate & Shannon think =)

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

New Sunday Classes!!!

I will start teaching classes September 9th at the Big Top at 1638 Clio.
It will be a standing Sunday event.
There are two 1-hour sessions from noon to 2 pm.
The first hour will be Tribal Technique which will include some conditioning drills for personal practice and instruction on the repertoire of moves that we use in our improvisational style.
The second hour will be Tribal Theory and Practice (combination lecture and dancing)during which time we will talk about the history of tribal bellydance, the formations, improvisational techniques and then dance together as improv.

The cost is $15 for Tribal Technique and $25 for both classes.
I'm really excited about this opportunity, It is a GROOVY space and you'll get to see some ever-changing art displays in their gallery of talented artists!
We will also be working towards a performance for December in a student salon.

Congratulations to Carol, Julie, Sally, Christina and Rachel for their great performance at Lakeside Mall yesterday!!!! We stopped shoppers in their tracks and had the biggest crowd of the day. So ladies, you should be very proud of yourselves, Kate and I are definitely proud of you all.

The Louisiana Renaissance Festival will be introducing a brand new show this
fall...and you have an opportunity to be a part of it!

Open auditions for the newly formed Louisiana Renaissance Festival Dance Troupe
will be held on Saturday, May 19th from 1 to 5 pm at the Festival Site. The
auditions are open to anyone who is interested in 16th century style dance and
who would like to be a part of the show. Absolutely no dance experience of any
kind is required!

To be eligible to audition to be part of this exciting new group, you must be at
least 16 years old (anyone under 18 requires written parental consent) and be
able and willing to make a commitment to rehearsals and performances. Troupe
members will be required to make a minimum of one rehearsal per month, be
available for mandatory dress rehearsals as we get closer to opening day, and
must perform at least 3 of the 6 weekends of LARF (one show per day each
weekend). You also must have garb that falls within our minimum guidelines.

Dramarama 15 - 2008 Here we come!!!!!

Well, ladies, let me be the first to tell you thank you sooooo much for the butt kicking workshop!! I learned so much and came away from there with every muscle in my legs and abs killing me!!!

Kami Liddle was awesome! I am going to have to go home now and place all my movements in a hat and pull two out a time and start teaching me brain and body to layer. It was a very informative workshop and better than that, it was a fun workshop. Got to me a lot of new people, many who are coming to the festival at the end of the month....

So, look forward to seeing ya'll in couple weeks! Thanks again!!

Dinner after the Kami Liddle workshop!!!!

We'd like to invite everyone to go to LA Macarena restaurant in Metairie with us after the Kami Liddle Workshop! (Everyone who comes to the workshop that is!)

It's Salvadoran food and has options for vegetarians, pescetarians (sp?), carnivores and more! Grilled meats, awesome Shrimp tacos, killer taquitos, sweet corn tamales (no meat), black beans, plantains, fried or boiled yucca and pupusas!

If you don't know what a pupusa is - It's sort of like a cornmeal pancake with cheese and spices in the middle. You smear the black beans on top of that and then top it all off with a dollop of Salvadoran cream. {No, not sour cream, it's not sour ;)}

Mama's in the kitchen cooking and Manny will entertain you as the host...check out our photo album for a pic of us with Manny after Indudala Tribe's first performance October 2006 for their grand opening in a new location.

I love this restaurant and I love Manny and his Mom. I'm sure you will too after you meet them and eat their food.

Tapas Yoga in Metairie is bringing in a certified Anusara Yoga teacher in just under two weeks. Jordan Bloom (www.yogabloom.net) will be coming in town from a yoga tour through Asia and Australia assisting John Friend, so his classes will definitely be spirited.

Jordan will lead a partner yoga session on Friday, December 8th from 7 to 9:30 pm. On Saturday, he'll have two sessions, one consisting largely of backbending work and arm balances and one focusing on opening the hips. Sunday morning will be more arm balances and backbends.

Fire question =)

I have a fire routine that I am performing this weekend and I can't get my flames to stay lit. I am only dancing with the tray and 2 candle sticks. I went to a workshop and they said to use cotton balls and lamp oil. My flame only flickers and if I move it goes out. Any help would be greatly appreciated! =)

Choli info WAY in advance

I have not set the date yet, but costuming in November will be cholis. You will need to bring your own pattern for this one. Until I make one of my own to sell (haha), copyright and ethical regulations make it necessary for you to bring your own pattern. If you don't have one, please check into getting one of these:

Folkware Pattern 144
Simplicity 5359

The Folkware pattern is Carolena's standards Fat Chance pattern and is sized for rib cage and cup size. The Simplicity pattern is a halloween costume that is designed to close in the front but I have made it and know how to alter the design to make it tie in the back.

You can also look for a rajistani choli pattern. The one I know of is discontinued but you might have some luck on e-bay.

Bring about 1 to 1-1/2 yards of prewashed cotton muslin fabric of a color and/or pattern you like (but not something you want perfect-- the first one is almost always a template and will take some time). Once you've altered the pattern for you it will get easier. Double fold bias tape in a complementary color will also make life easier. I recommend making the first choli on a standard machine with woven cotton to get the feel and perfect fit, then you can move to sergers and other fabrics.

To all the area belly dancers-- I am trying to organize a series of costuming workshops for any and all who want to come and would even be willing to take it on the road to go to other areas. Let me know what you want and we can look into it and discuss cost.

Here are some basic plans for the rest of the year at Bayou Shimmy, my BR home.
Aug- Pantaloons (set for the 26th at Bayou Shimmy)
Sept: tiered skirts (TBD)
Oct: Cholis (TRB)
Nov: Belts and Scarves (there will probably be a focus on yarn belts) (TBD)
Dec: Hair alls (syntheitc dreads and/or cowrie falls) (TBD)

If you have other costuming ideas or want to attend these, let me know and I will keep you posted. Believe me I have boxes of materials and supplies and it will be a ling time before I run out of projects!

July 22nd event in Baton Rouge

I will be hosting a costuming circle and improvisational techniques class on July 22nd.

Costuming Circle (10-12): Come one, come all. Bring whatever project you have started and need help on, or need to start, or have materials and don't know what to do with them. We'll have sewing machines, a serger, iron, ironing board, and a couple seamstresses available to assist in anything you need. We will be using Bayou Shimmy's space, so if you bring $5 for studio space, that'd be a great help-- advice and directions free :) If you have transportable machines and are willing to share, that would be a help too.

Imrovisational Fundamentals (1-3): Based on Tribal techniques and foundations, we'll discuss formations, dancing options, creating a personal box, circling moves, circling up, and changing leaders-- all important aspects of any improvisational dance styles. Cost will be $15 and we will break down a couple introductory moves to use throughout the workshop.

More to come: We will be doing these once a month, so look forward to focused circles: shirts, cholis, pantaloons AND more FUNdamentals including partnering, chorusing, and other techniques for changing things up.

Awesome weekend

We just had the best weekend with Darshan and area bellydancers (from Lake Charles to Plaquemines)-- it was rejuvenating and grounding and just a most memorable experience.

Saturday we learned the first part of the P.U.R.E. foundation choreography and then decided to give the performance a whirl in the Lower 9th ward at 2 volunteer areas- the Common Ground and the Free Clinic still being built. Thanks to Darshan, Jessica, Teresa, Anne, Nina, Tracey, and Jamie for the great experience Shannon and I shared with you and that community-- and they'll keep getting better and bigger!!!!!!

Believe it or not, 9 dancers can get costumed and ready in 30 minutes raiding Shannon's enormous costume closet, so huge zagahreets to Shan's hospitality. And our great drummers (Stephen, Jennifer, and Steve) who pulled out a performance after learning the music only 8 hours previously!!!

Thanks to all the ladies who attended the two day of workshops both were beautiful and wonderful. Wish you all could have been there-- it was an adventure never to be replicated, but we will strive to create many many more variations :)

What we're up to lately....

May - master class with Darshan (Cammi Vance) in Houston this Friday, PURE in houston on Saturday.

June - Checking in with the "Mothership of ATS" - Megha, Director of Devyani in Birmingham, AL - My first teacher.

July - Co-hosting PURE and Darshan in NOLA at Tapas Yoga and Movement Studio.

Kate is teaching Tribal classes in Baton Rouge at Bayou Shimmy and I am teaching a Lighthearted Introduction to Tribal Style at Tapas on Friday nights.

We are enjoying our busy and exciting Summer!!!!!

April Art Bar Performance!!!!

We just got back from South Carolina where we performed with our Girl/Bellydancer Extraordinaire - Natalie Brown!

We had a blast and brought the house down with some of our combos and Natalie's sword work.

Thanks to all of you in SC who came out to see us! {and tip us and buy us drinks ;)}
What a warm reception!

We can't wait to come back and do it again!

I wanted to be the first to congradulate you (here on tribe) for you bravery and commitment. Watching you two ladies take shape has been mythical... like watching a phyonix rise from the ashes (which isn't far from your story at all). Being thrust from the nest (as cercumstance dictated) only taught you fair birds how to fly... and you were off, drifting over mountains and dancing on air.
