Broad Ripple Park Hoopjam

Hey all! After chatting with several hoopers, I think Saturdays from 2-4 will work for most people. I'd like to start a weekly jam at Broad Ripple Park beginning July 12th. The exact location will be posted soon as I need to go over there and look for a shaded area with a picnic table for our music setup. I have a few extra hoops and will be making more for the jam soon, but other extras would be greatly appreciated too! See you there!

I'm leaving town for three weeks. hopefully by the time i get back things will be warming up and we can look into trying to get together outdoors. maybe we can go to different parks around town so that its not the same people driving to a central location. what are some place close to you that you like to hoop? what side of town do we all live on? start getting this going while im gone. i live right downtown so be anywhere in 20 minutes. we have more new hoopers and new people in the tribe recently. tell me what you think and how you feel about this. also give ideas about times and what your schedule looks like. i will see you all later.

I've been hopping for about a year and a half and am stuck. I need help to learn more tricks... Was absolutely exstatic that there are other hoopers in the indy area. When i tell others i hoop they look at me like i'm weird. I would love to meet this group sometime, to exchange hints. I have a decent back yard and would be willing to host. once it gets a little warmer, but i'm still outside hoopin. would love some feedback..

Hi all,

I had a hooping gig I was commited to do, but I did not get the days I requested off work (I am a new employee, so can't really fight it). This is a gig with Jamming Talent in Cincinnati (the aerial silks people). I am looking for a hooper to replace me. If you or anyone you know might be interested please contact me ASAP!

The pay is $400, but you need to be at all the rehearsals. You only have to perform (hooping) to one song. Here is the schedule:

Rehearsals (total 12 hrs)

Sat Jan 12: 12-2p
Tues 15th: 6-8p
Thurs 17th: 6-8
Sat 19th: 12-2p
Tues 22: 6-8p
Thurs 24: 6-8p

SHOW: Sat 26th: 2-3p

Please let me know ASAP if you or a friend can fill my position. You can tribe me or email me ( sayyida@woh.rr.com )

Thanks,
NEW PSIhoop for sale

Hey ya'll...

I bought a PSI hoop recently--just received it last week and used it only once. Although it is amazing and I love it (I think PSI makes the best hoops, hands down), I need different lighting options for my purposes, so I am selling it. Here are the specs:

Standard 1” tubing
LEDS: 10 Dragonfly, 8 elfin
42” from outer rim to outer rim (40" or 41" if measured from inner rim to inner rim).
Bought new last week for $320 shipped. Asking $250 shipped.

I'm not on tribe very much any more, so if you're interested, please email me at allison@rebelgalaxie.com. I'll ship it the same day I receive payment. Patrick of PSIhoops is backordered right now until after the new year so if you want one for Christmas, this may be your chance!
WHERE: Kira's Oasis in Centerville ( www.kirasoasis.com )
What do you hoop to?

Soulive
Railroad Earth
Medeski, Martin and Wood
Stringtown Pickers
Deep Fryed Acousti Blasters

Though not always Free ,Sayra, (hehe) the last Railroad Earth show had room for hoopers. I dont know if they would let us in with hoops, but it would hurt to ask venues that have room.

Hello everyone!! I am excited to see more hoopers around than I expected. But it seems that we are all spread throughout the state and thats a drag.

My name is Lynn, as you can see. I've been hooping since March. I get at it 3-4 times a week for an hour at least. I love it so much! I have a large livingroom with a tall ceiling but nothing beats the space outside. Thanks to Sayra for finding me on myspace and turning me onto the tribe. I was out of town and missed the Irish Festival. I heard someone was there with a lighted hoop of some sort. I'm charged about getting on here, but short on time....I'll write more later.

Peace

Hi!

My name is Erin-I've been hooping since June of last year and I absolutley love it! I've made lots of progress in the time that I've been hooping, but I want to make a lot more :) I currently live in Bloomington, IN (just moved here from South Bend) and I haven't been hooping near as much as I'd like to--there isn't really anywhere for me to do it in my apartment and I don't know one other person that hoops here! I'm moving to Indy in December for school. I don't really have a lot of places to hoop here in btown, and I'm looking for fellow hoopers in Indy. I'm there almost every other weekend, so if you guys ever want to get together and hoop I'm up for it! :)

Wednesdays
8pm to 9pm (or so)
Minnetrista Cultural Center...on the BIG green area out back.

I'll provide the hoops if you don't have one and may even have some for sale (ranging in price from $5 to $20), but don't feel you MUST buy one, I'll continue bringing hoops for others to use.

If it's been a rainy day just keep watch on the weather because if it clears up by 8pm I'll be out there with the hoops. Also, on the first day I'll try to give everyone a card with all my info on it.....just in case.

Obviously bring some water for drinking. You'll get thirsty and I don't want anyone dehydrating.

Wear clothes in which you'll feel comfortable.

If you're late, don't sweat it. If you're early....wait....I might be running late. I'm driving back into town from Gas City....where I work until 7pm....then running home to fill up the water bottle, change clothes, and maybe grab a snack.

Speaking of snacks...you may not want to be full when you hoop. Since the hoop rotates in the gastric area (stomach and abdomen) it may feel uncomfortable. Eat about an half hour before hooping......if you want. This is a personaly judgement call. It's all up to you.

If you have any questions or concerns, pm me.

Hello Indianapolis!

Hooping.org has been restructured, redesigned and relaunched and I invite you all to stop by and check it out. There's more information about what's been going on posted there, and now that I'm doing this solo as well (Vera stepped down in February) I'd also like to invite you all to contribute your writing, photos, thoughts, videos and more. I welcome your talent and input in keeping this almost four-year-old world-wide community hooping project alive.

Peace!

While all the entries were wonderful, I really felt called to award Sharna first place because of the unusual creativity of her moves. Beautiful!!! And Erica was a close contender, not only for the beauty and diversity of all her moves, but because of her fun and thoughtful presentation style. Congratulations everyone!

Watch the entries here!

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym_P8__DRq0

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ekDuhjQQEE

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ7fVdbGQVU

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSlfQeLDsYw

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPPYrAy4gS0

SECOND PLACE: Erica Edelman
YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P90mutX0tUg
Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

SECOND PLACE: JESSICA SPARKS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScregYQ55to
The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

Hey ladies,

Natasha, hoop genius and all-around bad-ass has been invited to join our burlesque show and will be in town on Thursday for rehearsals. Since several of us wanted to take lessons from her but couldn't get over to Ohio, I thought you might be interested in taking advantage of the opportunity while she's in town! Our rehearsal starts at 5pm and will likely go three or four hours. so maybe after that?

What you you think?

Muncie Gras - Feb. 17th

Okay, since the downtown development team don't seem to understand what a website is best used for (ie putting up useful information of what is going on...prices, activities, etc) I won't be giving you all a link. However, here in Muncie, IN on Feb. 17th we will be having our annual (4th? 5th?) Muncie Gras celebration. Last year I believe it was $10. There are two outdoor stages, one large one small. Walnut street in downtown Muncie is cordened off for about 3 to 4 blocks. There are vendors selling drinks, baubles, food, and more. There's normally even a mechanical bull.

I'm not sure about arrangements at this point in time. While I live in a house LARGE enough to house 20+ people semi-comfortably, that may not be an option. My friend Spencer will have some room, but it's limited and going fast, so a hotel room may be in order.....and conviently there is one downtown ( http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-328554-radisson_hotel_roberts-i ) that I would suggest for an easy get-away. If enough out of towners show an interest in getting a suite that may be something that we can arrange for, and it would be kind of fun.....at least for all us single folk.

Also, if you are a performer and are planning on coming, let me know. The Fickle Peach, a local bar....my fav....especially since I know the owners pretty damned well and drink there whenever I'm out.......have a booth this year and would like performers (fire/glow/etc) to perform by their booth. This would mean free admittance, some free drinks (beers), and a way to share your talent with the folks of Muncie. Just let me know what you'll need (safety/space), if you'll be doing fire or glow, etc. I'll be doing my LED hoop, if all goes well. I still have to practice a bit more before it's there there there.

So....this is closer, is NOT burner oriented, but that normally doesn't stop me from making it out to it, and it's just another way to hang and have fun with some great people. So there's the info....as much as I know. I would love to see some of you out.

Hooping meet-up Thursday October 26th in Castleton!

I hear there is a weekly drum circle in Castleton so I thought it would be a good opportunity for the local hoopers to get together to meet, talk about getting studio space to conduct classes and have future meet-ups, and, well, hoop!

It takes place at the Conga Shop (I don't know if that's the official name or just what the poi spinners I heard about this from call it...ha!) on Bash Road by I-69.

I can't wait to meet some other hoopers!

Hoop and Poi gathering in OH

Hi everyone!

I host a bunch of hoop and poi gatherings at my house in Centerville, OH (south of Dayton), which is about 2 hours from Indianapolis, IN. If anyone is interested in coming to one, please let me know, and I can send you more information.

The next one is Nov. 3. From 6-8pm there will be a class, Intro to Fire Poi, for $20, and then from 8pm on there is a general gathering. Dec is the same deal, except the class is Intro to Doumbek with guest instructor Dave Hergert of Snakes Rising. I am expecting at least 10 people for each.

I also teach hooping at Kiras Oasis ( www.kirasoasis.com )on Fridays from 6-7pm, in alternating sessions with poi.

Here is my website, which is highly in need of updating! lol: www.pyrokinetika.com
Here is the (also out-of-date) hooping page: http://www.pyrokinetika.com/hoop.htm

Hope that no one minds that I am posting OH info on a IN page, but I figured if nothing else, now you all know that there is a (relatively) nearby hooping community, and maybe we can plan to get OH and IN hoopers to meet up and share ideas some day!

I met so many other hoopers and told them about this site so that we can meet up and have bigger groups. I even met miss Molly the firedancer. She was so much fun. Anyway Michael was on fire and i had a great time. hope to see you all soon(maybe thursday, yes?) peace

Burlesque dancer in Indy, new to hooping

I *just* discovered hooping this week during a month-long stay in Flordia. I have a burlesque act and want to add hooping into the mix. Obviously, I totally suck and know virtually nothing about hooping, but I think I'm a fairly quick study and would love to find others to hoop with. There are drum circles in Indy on Wednesday and Thursday nights where hoopers, poi spinners, and other freak and weirdos congregate ;) Maybe some of us can meet up there? Or maybe someone has other ideas...Whatever...I'd just love to get a group started! I know it sounds lame to meet up with a brand new hooper who doesn't know anything, but we've got to start somewhere, right? Let's get together!!

Hello!

So, there are now three of us. YAY!!!

Okay, I'll introduce myself now. I'm April, aka Poosie Kat. Yes, there are people who actually call me that...Pooz for short. heeheehee. I've lived in Muncie for most of my life, and currently have no plans on moving anytime soon....eventually I hope to mosey on out of here though. I've been hooping for about four months now and completely LOVE it. I like to stand around, talk on the cell, and hoop....then after that warm up I like to practice my tricks. I've held a couple of Wednesday Hoop Days here in Muncie to which people did show up, but a) not many, b) most of them never came back and c) none of them had hooped since childhood. I make my own hoops, and am currently waiting on instructions to make a fire hoop (one that doesn't hurt the structure of the hoop like previous designs). Now that it's getting cooler out finding a place big enough for me to hoop, and two to ten more, has become a goal. I don't want to have to put the hoop down for a couple of months just because of inclement weather. Also, I would love to hoop with others who have hooped for a while (even just a month...for me that's a while)....not to say that I don't like to hoop with people who are just picking it up, that's wonderful, but I would like to learn some new tricks and possibly teach some new tricks to someone else. There ya go, a little about me. So....tell us a bit about yourself.
