Russian Oil Tanker Splits Apart in Black Sea, Spilling Tons of Fuel
By VOA News
11 November 2007
A Russian tanker at anchor in the Kerch Strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov has broken in two in a fierce storm, spilling some two thousand tons of fuel oil into the sea.
Authorities say 13 crew members of the Volganeft-139 were trapped aboard a section of the ship at mid-day Sunday awaiting rescue. Russian officials are calling the oil spill an environmental disaster that could take several years to clean up.
Separately, Russian maritime officials say two freighters carrying sulfur have sunk in the strait, and two Turkish cargo ships have run aground nearby in the Black Sea. A sixth ship, a Russian vessel carrying scrap metal, was reported sunk outside the Ukraine port of Sevastopol.
Authorities said multiple rescue operations were under way today, as heavy winds and high seas continued to batter the region. -

Re: OIL SPILL ???
Sun, November 11, 2007 - 8:51 AMThe SF Bay one is a National Disaster and there are many expensive boats that are stuck in their marinas. The only solution I see to that problem is to tow all the boats out and haul them elsewhere. Like everyone with a boat can afford that. The boats are just one problem to be certain. That was just my main thought at the moment because it's what was being discussed on the news on friday night. I know alot of people that commute to SF from Vallejo and other places. I wonder if the ferries will still be able to provide service or not? Now I am wondering about ALL shipping into the bay. Is it still possible? They were talking about how the boat motors would be ruined. Does ships work the same way? So many questions. -

Re: OIL SPILL ???
Sun, November 11, 2007 - 9:59 AMMy Bf is a Captain and Mechanic, and has a 45' sailboat in Alameda. He says that the worry is not to the mechanics of boats, and operations are continuing in the Bay. The worry is definatly about the enviroment and the impact on the sealife, and the fishing industry. For example, crab season is about to begin, and the crab fisherman run the seawater over the caught crab to keep it fresh on the boat. I was sooo looking forward to crab at Thanksgiving... -
