I am so glad friends wont have to mail their medicine prior to visiting anymore. One less thing to worry about. And their countries never banned our citizens as far as I know. This his huge news for the world. Yay for Obama on this one!!!
Dear Marvin:
I’m writing to share two pieces of great news. Friday morning President Obama signed into law two bills that will improve health for people living with HIV and help erase stigma that often surrounds HIV infection. This is the culmination of years of advocacy on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS.
The president removed the ban on HIV-positive individuals entering our country, putting an end to years of discrimination and blatant disregard of science. The president also signed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act, reauthorizing the cornerstone federal program promoting health for uninsured and underinsured people living with HIV and AIDS.
Bay Area residents can take special pleasure in this news. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Representative Barbara Lee were actively involved in moving this legislation forward. You can be very proud that you’ve supported years of advocacy in Washington, D.C.
I was personally delighted that the president invited my colleague Ernest Hopkins, the Foundation’s Director of Federal Affairs, to participate in the signing ceremony. In the attached photo, Ernest, wearing a matching tie, stands directly behind the president and is joined by Speaker Pelosi, Representative Lee and Jeanne White Ginder, Ryan White’s mother, among other Foundation allies.
Ensuring access to health care through Ryan White and eliminating the scourge of bigotry from our immigration policies are signs of promise that the Foundation has an ally in the White House poised to support the Foundation’s commitment to reduce new HIV infections and improve health for people living with HIV.
For your critical role in this work, I offer my deepest thanks.

Re: Obama lifts ban on hiv postive visitors to the USA.
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 7:48 PMWell, chalk that for one good move! He is still up against the same power elite who were in power before and who are in his cabinet and advisors--the military and financial ones--I don't know what else -we- or -he- can do....
Whaddaya think? -

Re: Obama lifts ban on hiv postive visitors to the USA.
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 8:08 PMFor sure. But I'm glad people can come here without worrying if they will be turned back. Year before last my friend mailed his medicine to me. The day he came they were bombing my apt building for termites. We were driving up to Eureka. I forgot his meds in the tent. So he went 7 or 8 days without. He was okay. But he could have gotten sick without them. If he, or anyone, can just bring his meds with him it is much better now. -

Re: Obama lifts ban on hiv postive visitors to the USA.
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 12:52 AMIt is outrageous that such a ban even exists.. (especially as the US was largely responsible for the fast spread of HIV in the first place..)
I am so eternally grateful that Obama's administration is removing all that bad blood which had been put in place the past 20 years..
Lets hope they can continue for many more years to come..
