Workshop Description: DOUBLE VEIL AND SPINNING-
Teaching her 7 techniques to double veil in addition to spinning pointers, Petite Jamilla uses Visualization and meditation methods to relax the body and focus the mind on spinning through which she found her own spiritual connection.
Artist Biographies:
Petite Jamilla
At 21, Petite Jamilla is the youngest dancer in the famed Belly Dance Superstar lineup. And yet, she is considered a veteran in her profession, as she has spent her life, from the time she could walk, immersed in the arts, especially belly dance. Petite Jamilla began dancing at the age of two, watching her mother, famous west-coast dancer: Jamilla Rasa at various Renaissance fairs and shows. She and her mother soon devised training in the art of veils, and at 5 years of age, this dynamo began the dance that would make her famous.
Zafira Dance Company
Zafira Dance Company's performances are opulent vignettes that combine Bellydance with contemporary and ethnic dance forms. The result is an ornate performance that blurs the boundary between old and new; performer and audience, earthy and elegant.
Guided by the mood of the music, Zafira draws the viewer into each piece by shaping rhythm and melody into gesture and form. Liquid movements, staccato accents and textured choreographies capture a timeless beauty that expresses both the sensuality and strength of the female form.
Khafif Middle Eastern Music and Dance Ensemble
Khafif has been making music and dancing together since 2001, adding our own unique flair to sassy Balkan beats and funky Silk Road steps.
Kari Merlina
Kari Merlina is a passionate and disciplined Belly Dancer who has been dancing since 1998 and teaching since 2003. Kari is a member of the Belly Dance troupe PurpleMatilda. She diversifies her dance style through Zafira Dance Company and Centro Flamenco de Pittsburgh. For more on Kari and Belly Dance in general, please visit her website: www.karimerlina.com .
Amethyst
Amethyst is a local belly dancer, instructor and show planner enjoying her 10th year of bellydance. She has recently become certified in the Ansuya style of belly dance as part of the Belly Dance Superstar Ansuya's comprehensive program in San Francisco, and plans to complete an additional program with Ansuya in Hawaii this November! Amethyst dances solo or with her troupe mates Astarte and Shanti.
Sahara Dance Troupe
Sahara Dance Troupe is one of Pittsburgh’s oldest Middle-Eastern dance troupes, originally formed in the late ‘80s. Although there have been many changes over the years it has always been an organization promoting the integrity of Middle-Eastern dance. Sahara specializes in the ethnic dances of Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and the Arabic regions. Performances range from traditional, folkloric cane and scarf dances to contemporary cabaret belly dance -- a modern form of the dance found currently in some Middle-Eastern countries with roots dating back into antiquity. Gypsy dance with its swirling skirts, upbeat rhythm, and festive tambourines is also an audience favorite. Sahara Dance Troupe offers beginning and advanced classes at the Dance Alloy Theatre of Pittsburgh.
