Artist Biographies:

Petite Jamilla

At 21, Petite Jamilla is the youngest dancer in the famed Belly Dance Superstar lineup. And yet, she is considered a veteran in her profession, as she has spent her life, from the time she could walk, immersed in the arts, especially belly dance. Petite Jamilla began dancing at the age of two, watching her mother, famous west-coast dancer: Jamilla Rasa at various Renaissance fairs and shows. She and her mother soon devised training in the art of veils, and at 5 years of age, this dynamo began the dance that would make her famous.

Zafira Dance Company

Zafira Dance Company's performances are opulent vignettes that combine Bellydance with contemporary and ethnic dance forms. The result is an ornate performance that blurs the boundary between old and new; performer and audience, earthy and elegant.

Guided by the mood of the music, Zafira draws the viewer into each piece by shaping rhythm and melody into gesture and form. Liquid movements, staccato accents and textured choreographies capture a timeless beauty that expresses both the sensuality and strength of the female form.

Khafif Middle Eastern Music and Dance Ensemble

Khafif has been making music and dancing together since 2001, adding our own unique flair to sassy Balkan beats and funky Silk Road steps.

Kari Merlina

Kari Merlina is a passionate and disciplined Belly Dancer who has been dancing since 1998 and teaching since 2003. Kari is a member of the Belly Dance troupe PurpleMatilda. She diversifies her dance style through Zafira Dance Company and Centro Flamenco de Pittsburgh. For more on Kari and Belly Dance in general, please visit her website: www.karimerlina.com .

Amethyst

Amethyst is a local belly dancer, instructor and show planner enjoying her 10th year of bellydance. She has recently become certified in the Ansuya style of belly dance as part of the Belly Dance Superstar Ansuya's comprehensive program in San Francisco, and plans to complete an additional program with Ansuya in Hawaii this November! Amethyst dances solo or with her troupe mates Astarte and Shanti.

Sahara Dance Troupe

Sahara Dance Troupe is one of Pittsburgh’s oldest Middle-Eastern dance troupes, originally formed in the late ‘80s. Although there have been many changes over the years it has always been an organization promoting the integrity of Middle-Eastern dance. Sahara specializes in the ethnic dances of Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and the Arabic regions. Performances range from traditional, folkloric cane and scarf dances to contemporary cabaret belly dance -- a modern form of the dance found currently in some Middle-Eastern countries with roots dating back into antiquity. Gypsy dance with its swirling skirts, upbeat rhythm, and festive tambourines is also an audience favorite. Sahara Dance Troupe offers beginning and advanced classes at the Dance Alloy Theatre of Pittsburgh.

Saturday, March 17TH, 2007!

About Issam:
On a June day a talent was born, it was Issam. Issam showed his love to music and particularly Tablah at an early age. His potential was discovered by few world renowned Tablah players whom Issam had a chance to learn from. While developing his own style in the musical field, he pursued an education earning a Masters Degree in Mathematics from the University Of Damascus. Rhythm and equations dominated his life. Issam acquired a vast well of knowledge about the middle eastern music and rhythms by associating with different music professionals in different regions in the Middle East. Issam established a new academic approach to the Tablah when he taught at the Music Institute In Damascus for nine years. Issam became very well known in the Middle East that gave him the honor to play for some of the most famous star singers and belly dancers. To name few he played for Molhem Barakat , Issam Rajji, Samir Yazbeck, Mohammad Gammal, Rageb Alama, Tony Hanna, Azzar Habib and Joseph Azzar. In 1983 Issam represented the Dancing Folklore Culture Group in London with Asala Nasri; followed similarly in 1985 and 1987 in Moscow and Algeria respectively.
Because of Issam's strong academic knowledge and his superior talent, he was chosen to write music for multiple musical shows, TV commercials and theater plays. He was distinguished for writing the music for two popular theater plays Kalegola and The Story of Jason and Meedia.
Issam is an impressive player on stage as well as in recording studios. He has a unique characteristic, he plays with the same quality and energy level at the beginning of the concert as at the end. In the year 2000, Issam was chosen to play with supper star Sting in the Western tour of the US. Sting was impressed with Issam's ability to record in the studio first take.

About Heather Stants and Urban Tribal:
Performance and the arts have been a life long passion for Heather Stants. In 1994 she graduated with a degree in photography and went on to work at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. and in the commercial photography industry in Chicago.

Heather Stants began her exploration of Middle Eastern Dance in Chicago over ten years ago. Under the direction of Stephanie Barto, Heather became a founding member of Read My Hips.

In 1999 Heather relocated to San Diego, Ca and began teaching classes in her unique approach to Tribal Belly Dance. In late 1999 Heather's vision became reality with her creation of Urban Tribal Dance Company.

UTDC began as the first company in Southern California representing Tribal Belly Dance. Over the past six years, Urban Tribal has continually pushed the boundaries of this Tribal Style and has broken new ground. Through their popularization of an "urban" influenced dance style, a paired down costume emphasizing body movements over ornamentation, the use of electronic music and the use of the dance form as a means of personal expression and interpretation, Urban Tribal has changed the face of contemporary Belly Dance.

Heather Stants, as a choreographer, respectfully borrows traditional influences and combines them with her own personal expression of living in the modern world around her creating innovative pieces that both reflect and inspire current culture.

As an instructor, Heather is known for her clear communication style and her ability to break down movements into easily understandable concepts. She teaches several weekly classes in the San Diego area. Through these classes, Heather has trained a crew of dancers to embody her fusion of belly dance and modern stylizations and inspired many more dancers across the country to step outside of the genre of Middle Eastern Dance and look to other dance forms for fusion ideas.

She has trained most of San Diego's Tribal Dancers spawning a flourishing San Diego dance community. Heather's unique style has also made her a sought after workshop instructor in the national and international Belly Dance communities.

Workshop description: My wish is to impart a solid foundation of dance movement with high impact and high energy drills and strengthening. My focus as a dancer and teacher is first and foremost expression, something that can't really be taught, as it is individual to each one of us, but can be facilitated with strong technique and the right learning environment. We will go over lots of pop-lock technique, as well as fluidity of movement, stressing on posture and upper body awareness. Layering of moves will be touched on, as well as exercises for fluttering, shimmying, and developing your glutes. Hip, head, shoulder and chest isolations will be drilled, as well as working on smoothing transitions from move to move. Kicks and spins will be highlighted, spot turns, paddle turns, and initiating a turn with virtually any part of the body. In the workshop dynamics of motion will be studied (aka not throwing everything out all at once, but holding back a little), and posture, upper body awareness from the shoulders all the way to the fingertips.
