Hey kittens. Insinuous will be performing at Spring Caravan 2009 in Somerset, NJ, Saturday 5/2 at 9:24. We'll, be kicking it old school (old school for us anyway) performing two of our classic pieces in Tribal Fusion and Gypsy Skirt styles.

Also, Kirsten and Dan will be performing with Groove Merchant on Saturday at 7pm., and Friga will be performing with Fringe Benefit on Sunday at 3:24.

But don't just come to see us. There are awesome people performing all weekend (seriously, there's no down time when you can run out for pizza), and there's really no part of the show that I wouldn't mind missing. There's too many faboo dancers and troupes for me to mention without forgetting anyone or making this post too long, so check out the schedule on the website.

Insinuous at the Lakewood Renaissance Faire!

That's right poodles. This Saturday Insinuous (or at least a small contingent of) will be making the trek from Raptor to Lakewood, NJ to perform at the Lakewood Lions Renaissance Faire. We're not sure what time we'll be on, as the dance schedule's keeping flexible to avoid competition with the joust and other performances. But there will be dance and other performances all day. It will be fun.

Workshop 1: Mezze Al Sharq

Mezze al Sharq (Combinations from technique, movements, expressions) Sassy to Demure, Bold to Delicate. Sample Jim Boz style Raqs Sharqi with this workshop - an overall introduction to his style and expression.

Workshop 2: Drills and Drum Solo
Date: July 27, 3 hours, 11 am - 12:30 pm, break from 12:30 pm-1:00 pm, 1:00 pm - 2:30p
Beginning with isolation techniques, we will move rapidly into combining layers for application in Drum Solo style performance piece. Combining movements into phrases, and then phrases into a choreography. A faster paced class.

Date: July 26, 7:00 pm - Doors open at 630pm. Pop Raqs Special Edition with very special guest Jim Boz. Special Edition Pop Raqs is a "mixed tape" show with both traditional and non traditional bellydance. We'll be performing along with several of your Philly favorites!

Hey all. Spring Caravan is coming soon, and Insinuous will be there. We'll be performing on Saturday June 7th at 12:32p.

Also, Kirsten and Dan will be performing with Alexia and Groove Merchant at 8pm on Saturday.

And (there's more!), Friga (me!) will be performing with Fringe Benefit at 5pm on Sunday.

So come out and watch us and everybody else who kicks ass at this festival.

Insinuous at Green Knoll?

Well actually, not quite. We'll be there, but not performing together. I'll be performing with Fringe Benefit, and Kirsten will be there solo. Other performers include students/ensemble members of DDLC, Mahira Tribe, and a pretty safe guess for Mahalat, Kinnari and the Nixies.

Unlike a lot of other events in the area, this is being held at a regular bar. So if you're not into the usual hafla groove of hummus and baba ganoush/sitting on the floor/drum circle until the cows come home, feel free to come hang out, have something to eat, get a drink and watch some performances. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday night.

Greetings!

Winter is the perfect time to focus inwardly on ourselves to bring about outward change for Spring. When it comes to dance, we often get so caught up in the physical details, that we may forget about what drew us to dance in the first place, and what it means to truly dance and express ourselves. So my January intensive will focus on "Enhancing Dance With Ritual" - a 3 hour intensive geared towards both dancers and Pagans, on incorporating the elements of ritual into the dance, while examining the relevance of the sacred and profane. We'll be incorporating practical techniques with a metaphysical approach to bring about real effective change in our bodies and our mental state.

Enhancing Dance With Ritual - learn to incorporate sacred meaning and intent with dance movement. Ritual is a dynamic union of self and spirit, above and below-so why should it be static? Learn to incorporate movement into your ritual with focused intention and discover a much more powerful experience. We'll look at the parts of various rituals from start to end, and how different sacred movements (gestures and dance steps) can be applied. Using ritual concepts from mystical spiritual traditions from both the East and West, we'll examine how the structure of a ritual can create a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in your performance and practice. A basic understanding of Pagan spirituality is helpful, but not required (however, an open mind and creativity is!). This workshops is geared to bellydancers as well as for Pagans looking to invigorate their workspace.

TUITION: $50 in advance by 1/15 (Tuesday!), $60 afterwards if space is available. At this time, there are handful of slots available. We are also offering a teacher/troupe discount - 4 registrations, the 5th is free.

In this workshop, you will learn the proper hand/finger techniques to produce clean beautiful sounds from your doumbek. You will learn how to play several traditional Middle Eastern rhythms as well as how to switch between them. PLAYING DRUM SOLOS FOR DANCERS 7PM

It's really the provence of the Greek system. It's hard to find a good video because the sound quality is usually crappy, and that's so important. also, the audience usually gets into it and blocks out the sound and image.

But if you take away the trash cans from Stomp, and add a whole hell of a lot more trash talking, you're close to stepping. :)

Good times in Warminster

Okay, after being lost for 45 minutes it was good times. :)

But CRAP, I forgot to take pictures. And spent way too much money.

That's okay, though - I can't wait to wear my glitter.

You ladies looked good, and you gentlemen sounded good. The extra practice paid off, I see...even if I did forget all of the structure I outlined for my drum solo practicing while Pete was sleeping off the tummy ache. Oh well, next time I won't blank out so bad.

Can't wait to see the video.

And holy crap Azhia said we did good and she wants Dan & Dom to drum for her! WOOOOO!

Hmmm...what's next?

Business Cards

Man...someone else needs to post here so I don't feel so OCD.

ANYWAY, I talked to Christine about designing some business cards. Don't worry about prices ect for now - just if we were to get hypothetical cars, we would need these questions from her answered:

*1) What info do you need on them?

* 2) Are there any existing pieces of art you'd like on them? Did you have anything in particular in mind for what you'd like? Anything you've seen that's caught your eye? Any particular colors you'd like to use?

For #1) Title of the group, person's name, person's speciality (dancer, drummer, teacher, costumer, etc.), phone number, email address, website. Anything else? Drummers do you want Legio of doumbek or whatever?

#2) Um....I dunno! I like the dark red that we used for the old website, and the font. Other than that, I'm clueless.

Ideas?

Ok, since our discussions on LJ and email have been rather nil, I thought I'd try to bring up the topic here.

To catch up the people who haven't been involved with previous discussion... we've noticed that the name "Ahanu Jaali" isn't quite catching on. Non-members (or non-immediate friends) have a hard time remembering it, or even getting the concept. It's cool and strong, but since we've only had one performance under the name (where we were listed in the program and announced wrong anyway) it wouldn't be such a big deal to change at this point.

So...does anybody have any suggestions? Any ideas will be discussed. So throw some ideas in, before I come up with a whole bunch of Viking-Faerie type names.

I guess this is all motiviated by my maddening itch to perform, but following a bit of conversation with Kirsten, we came to the thought that we need to perform in front audiences that aren't comprised solely of Philly Dancers. Performing for them is great, but if we ever want to see the troupe, and on the larger scale, middle eastern dance, grow into something more than dancing for other dancers, we've gotta get some exposure to the public.

I'm doing some poking on the net, and one of the first sites I've come across is festivalnet.com it's a nationwide directory of festivals and shows, with a radius search, and search based on the presence of music. The site can also send emails about event registrations deadlines. Do you think that a membership to something like this would be worth the time/money/and effort?

New photo shoot

Hey all.

So we need a new photo shoot with all members of the troupe, drummers included. So when are we all free? I am thinking we should try for the first weekend in November, before it gets too cold to shoot outside - if we want we could try for the beach shoot, or we can just go to the park where we did the shoot last time. Let me know if you're free so we can get this done before there's snow on th ground. :-)
