who tracks this for you? Your record company? Or are you in BMI or something?

holy shit, that's an impressive list Polly.

I have the same question.........how do you track this?

and when do you find time to do it?

        Nice work, congratulations.

Contratulations Polly. That's great that your music is getting exposed to so many people. Who does your promotion? I'm familiar with some of those college stations from when I did promotion for a small label many years ago. And getting exposed on community and public radio is a wonderful way to get your music heard by an intelligent and discerning audience. Have you done radio interviews and tours to promote the albums?

          Great work. Way to go!

First let me say that the ways of radio are mysterious and not to be questioned. Actually not; it's all about how program directors get thousands and thousands of CDs, and have no time to hear them all, so if you want to get played, somebody has to bug them to listen to you and play you. I used radio promoters for both albums.

For Summerland the promoter noticed the Celtic theme running through all the lyrics and decided to pitch it as a modern folk album. Diogenes was a very different album and the promoter for that one pitched it as New Age. As you can see from the stats that wasn't quite as successful. The promoters kept track of all the adds and faxed me reports weekly, and I compiled them when the 8 weeks of promotion were over to make the listing I posted. It's possible there was airplay after the 8 weeks were up, but I don't have any data for it.

When "Not Made of Stone" comes out I hope I can find a promoter who can do something different, like maybe see me as a spiritual descendant of Laurie Anderson. It's hard when one is uncategorizable. :)

I've gotten to do quite a few radio interviews. I love doing those. They're a lot of fun. Touring has been the toughest thing so far. It's even harder to get live gigs when you are uncategorizable, than to get radio airplay.

"First let me say that the ways of radio are mysterious and not to be questioned."

You got that right. I've been working in radio for 25 years and in commercial radio it is way harder to get any airplay. Unless a large label is promoting you and the station sees that you have value to their listeners, they won't bother because its all about ratings. Using non-commercial radio is smart because you can get a buzz going about your music there and once the publicity hits the mainstream the corporate owned stations will jump on your bandwagon.

I work with Program Directors all day long and know how difficult they can be.

tell me about the uncatergorizable bit, Polly.

with a record where I play translucent dayglo lime green UV active plastic as a prime source of sound I've found it hard to get placed in record stores...............lol.

I have, however, found that college radio and RPM directors tend to just love what I do and I have done a lot of on air concerts and interviews...........you just have to have a hell of a lot of time to personally connect with them.

Another pitfall one must deal with: every year, these stations change personell and disc jockeys as people graduate and new ones take their places.

I just produced the largest live looping festival in history with 50 artists from 7 countries in 3 cities over 5 days and couldn't get UCSC's DJs to even respond to emails because they had just had a change of the guard.
                Talk about frustrating................ouch!!!!!!!
