3rd year anniversary of dancing and now hooping at the Goat farm

Save the date fellow dancers and hoopers! September 20th, Sunday afternoon from 12-5 this is our 3rd year and is looking more fun than ever.
We are inviting anyone who wants to join us in performing, watching, trying new food, wine and beer, shopping for costumes, petting the goats, eating some delicious cheese and ICE CREAM too!

This will be an outdoor event North of Woodward, just 30 minutes from Ames or Des Moines. It will go on regardless of weather but be advised that if it does rain there will not be enough room under cover for performing so we all need to hope for lots of sunshine! Northern Prairie Chevre at 1247 310th Street is the location.

Milton ( Sheeder , all natural beef) will be serving barbeque beef and grilled burgers, we will also be serving ice cream cones( Clover Leaf Dairy) and have other items available for eating there or to share once you are home. We have a winery or two and a brewery committed for samples and at least three costume companies so far with new temptations!

You are invited to dance and share with us, each group can dance a half hour or so but let me know ahead so that we can make sure everyone has a chance. There will also be a family member photographer there who takes wonderful photos for a very reasonable price, it would help her plan ahead too if we have an idea of who would be interested.

All questions are welcomed, for a printable map check www.centraliowasmallfarms.com it is quite easy to find and we'll have signs posted along the way.

Circus Saturdays are:
Date: 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month starting May 9th
Time: 2 to 6 PM
Where: Des Moines Social Club, 1408 Locust
Description:
Calling all hoopers, jugglers, poi/staff spinners, acrobats, and other circus performers! Des Moines Social would like to invite you to come on down to join other circus artists in practicing and sharing techniques with others. This event is free but donations are appreciated to support space costs.

Circus Saturdays in Des Moines, coming Feb to the Des Moines Social Club

So the Des Moines Social Club is almost finalized on their space! I am in charge of tribal activities which includes circus stuff like hoops!

I thought it would be fun to have a weekly shake down of hooping, juggling, poi, whatever from 2-6 every Saturday. This would be free but donations appreciated to help the space cover heating costs. This sound like fun? I really want to get everyone together every Saturday and provide a center for circus arts. There will be classes and such there too, it really is going to be amazing. Our friends Vesuviusare coming up to perform fire and Radiohiro aka Minimonk from Chicago to play some wicked beats Friday! Should be amazing. The Subjective Theatre Company of Des Moines (STC/DSM) is proud to present the theatrical world premiere – The End of the World!

Following the success of The Subjective Circus in May (700 attendees, over $10,000 raised), The Des Moines Social Club proudly unveils our next annual event – Subjective Halloween!

Taking place in downtown Des Moines, The Subjective Theatre Company will create a complete installation on the upper floor of an open warehouse!

“All civilizations are only seven days away from chaos.”

Famously, or infamously, spoken by Rwandan hero Paul Rusesabagina after he witnessed the local Post Master and a local University Professor beating each other over a scrap of bread during the tragedy in Rwanda, The End of the World is a terrifying attraction imagining those seven days. Operating like a Disneyworld ride, the audience will be moved throughout the attraction guided by the narrator of our story. Blending elements of theatre, film, visual art, carpentry, music and dance, the intrepid audience will witness the most frightening and visually stunning Halloween adventure of their lives!

Following the revealing journey, the audience will be treated to a world-class Halloween celebration on the bottom floor of the building. Complete with diverse bands, fire dancers, DJ’s and other Halloween performances, the celebration will continue throughout the evening. Our attendees will be able to dance and enjoy the entertainment, or go off into one of the many lounge areas set up around the space to talk, relax, network and mingle. Beer provided by Rogue and Hub City. Wine by Glazer’s Distribution.

Partnering with The Des Moines Food Bank – bring 2 canned goods and get $1 off the ticket price, or $2 off for 3 cans or more – canned goods will be used as props for the show, and donated to The Des Moines Food Bank the following day!

I am helping with a benefit to get the Des Moines Social Club going. It is going to be based around a circus old school style with things ranging from fire performances to spoken word. You can read about their vision for the club at http://www.subjectivetheatre.org/SC-BusinessPlanF.pdf .

Basically it is a non profit that will be a dinner theatre with space for classes for arts of all kinds and many other wonderful things. I believe this will be amazing to have in Des Moines and have met with the person behind it and believe in their vision for it.

DRAKE STUDENTS ORGANIZE EARTH WEEK EVENTS

DES MOINES, Iowa—Drake Environmental Action League (DEAL), Residence Hall Association (RHA) and Student Activities Board (SAB) will collaborate with other student and community groups to organize Earth Week events and promote environmental awareness on and off campus.

Earth Week will be held from April 14-18. All events will take place on Drake Campus, outdoors, in Helmick Commons. The following events will be open to the public:

Tuesday, April 15: Planet Earth, the Discovery Channel documentary will be shown free of cost throughout the evening on Helmick Commons. (8:00pm-11:00pm)

Thursday, April 17: Conservation Day will feature conservation educators from Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge and Blank Park Zoo. Activities will include prairie seed cleaning and presentations with live animals. (10am-12pm)

Friday, April 18: EarthJam will celebrate the week with Iowan hula hoopers, speakers and three bands: Flying Frog Brigade, Andrew’s Ave, and Public Property. Speakers will highlight environmental issues throughout the night, which will end with dancing under the stars.

Hula Hooping for EarthJam Festival!

Hello Everyone,

I have messaged a couple of people in this group, but wanted to make an open forum as well. I am a senior at Drake University in Des Moines and I am putting together an all-day music festival to commemorate Earth Week (a week of events put on every year by the environmental organization here at Drake). The event will be help on April 18th on the Drake University campus. Entertainment will include music by 3 bands (Public Property, Andrew's Ave. and Tim Knepper's Flying Brigade (led by a professor at Drake), 2 DJs, short speeches by the president of Drake University and Congressman Boswell and (I am hoping) hula hoopers, jugglers and kite fliers.
This post is meant to ask assistance in the hula hooping realm. You could come whenever you are able (between 4:30pm and 2am), hoop for awhile and perhaps teach some people the art. We will be able to compensate you for gas. It should be a fun, easy-going event with good music and good people.
If there is enough interest, we are thinking of having hula hoop making materials available for people to make hoops as well.

World Hoop Day - Iowa

Hello, received a message from the organizer of this fabulous day Annie and had these things she needs help with:

We need people to talk to the press (we'll have a press release that can be modified per city)
Also to put up posters (again they are being made)
And to organize your day
Give out hoops
Teach lessons
And talk about WHD - the organization that provides hoops to kids who can't afford them.

I wanted to see how much everyone would like to help with this, I don't think any one person should be totally responsble as we are a community of hoopers here. I do think we should have one main city to organize something in a park and was thinking Cedar Rapids may be good since majority of people there and the city is a bit more progressive. What I think would be cool is to rent a park area shelter, bring some speakers for music and a ton of free hoops to give away. Anyone know a great spot in the center of CR for this? Could talk to the city and get their buy-in and work the newspapers and such. Lets get organized and make this fabulous, we all know how much joy and amazing things hooping has brought to our lives and it should be shared with everyone !

so I'm taking it upon myself since I'm a single, lonely broke ass artist to try and do something for me on my birthday...ya, 38 on monday...

Des Moines Hoop Meet 2007

I moved to Des Moines now from West Side so a bit more centrally located. There is an awesome park near me called Greenwood park. I plan to put flyers up and spread the hoopiness. I know that more people wanted to start hooping in Des Moines so thing we can get a good group going this year!

Hooping.org has been restructured, redesigned and relaunched and I invite you all to stop by and check it out. There's more information about what's been going on posted there, and now that I'm doing this solo as well (Vera stepped down in February) I'd also like to invite you all to contribute your writing, photos, thoughts, videos and more. I welcome your talent and input in keeping this almost four-year-old world-wide community hooping project alive.

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.

Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

video @ myriah's birthday party

So, I was thinking it would be fun to commemorate myriah's 18th birthday party with a hoop video (especially with hoopmama Betsy in town). Any ideas for how to do it?

I think it would be cool to have something like disney's mousekeeters where they introduce each person and clap and the person does a little something..script would be like.

hoop in my backyard!!!

well i have this idea of maybe hosting a get together in my backyard some weekend. We could grill, hoop, listen to music, stay the night if you please, i have a large backyard and really miss a lot of you.

would anyone be interested? i know that there is a lot of events coming up and im thinking sometime in august or sept....or we could have a little birthday hoop celebration my birthday is aug 29 and jimmys is aug 19.

just some ideas.

Hooping a Fad?

I saw a girl hooping with three hoops on a K-Swiss commercial earlier today. I wasn't sure how to react. I'm glad it's becoming cool, 'cause the more the merrier and stuff, but that's pretty crazy. I'm just imagining in three years hooping on greek street and it actually being cool. Then three years later hooping somewhere and people saying, "That was SOOOO three years ago". Crazy shit.

Advertising for hooping in Des Moines

So, Alyssa and I went to an awesome bookstore Saturday and talked to the lady about hooping. Got me thinking about putting up a few flyers there and a juice place inviting people to come to the weekly gathering. I am the only person there but maybe some more people in the future. I just feel compelled to spread the hoopiness!! Also, I think I may be selling a couple hoops in their store (at cost basically, would feel wierd charging alot for them).

I was going to maybe put the URL of this tribe on the flyer, anyone think that would be wierd/uncomfortable?

Bringing an Advanced teacher to Iowa

Regular hoop day on Wednesday in Des Moines?

Anyone up to meeting regularly on Wednesday near my place in Des Moines to hoop together and share tricks? There are a ton of parks near me within walking distance. Be nice to find a boombox and jam out. I could teach new stuff I learned over the weekend and you could do the same!
