hi, I lost my iphone, boo hoo. Now have to decide how to replace it. Craigslist is full of "iphone for sale" ads, not sure whether it's a good idea to buy a used iphone or not. Any opinions?
My main question is, and I'm hoping someone can help, what are the main differences between a 3G iphone and a 3GS iphone?
If I recall correctly, the 3GS can do video recording without being jailbroken, is that accurate?
Thanks for any feedback,
harriet
Ps. any opinions on whether I should report the iphone stolen? I set it down in a store, and it was gone 20 minutes later when I went back for it. Had my email address on a label affixed to the back of the phone, suffice to say I have not received any emails from anyone finding the phone. Should I fill out a police report, or is this just a "inattentive girl stupidly set down her iphone" situation?

Re: Differences between 3G and 3GS?
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 9:57 PMwww.apple.com/iphone/compare-iphones/ is pretty good.
S gives you:
Speed
Higher res camera with ability to tell it where to focus and get light values.
Video (as you say)
Voice Control
Compass (I said "why bother?" until I saw they incorporated it into the map. With a click of the button, the map orients itself so North is North, South is South, etc. Very useful).

Thu, October 1, 2009 - 12:24 PMDid you happen to have the iPhone locator app installed? I haven't had to use mine yet, but I have experimented with it. Very cool.
But... go 3GS... do not think any more about it.
But... in case you get desperate, I have a perfect condition 3G that I no longer use. $350 is what I'm asking. -

Re: Differences between 3G and 3GS?
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 8:53 PMI paid $399 and renewed my ATT contract, and replaced my 3G with a 3GS.
I am stunned by how much faster it is, and how it almost always has 3G connectivity. It's a much faster, better device than my 3G was. And I haven't even played with the videocamera yet!
Am almost happy I lost my 3G!
Thanks for all the feedback. Will check out the iPhone locator app. -

Fri, October 9, 2009 - 1:29 AMGlad you made the plunge, H. You'll be happy for a long time to come. And don't forget all the added benefits the 3GS compass feature provides app developers. I've been touting 'wikitude' to anybody that will listen. Amazing and free.
Enjoy it all, H.

Fri, October 9, 2009 - 1:38 AMI want one badly. But I'm completely unwilling to sign another contract with AT&T. I want off, but I want to keep my iPhone. -

Re: Differences between 3G and 3GS?
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 6:07 AMRumor rumor rumor.
And I tend to think it'll be years before that ever happens with the existing iPhone, if at all. Apple may have something else planned for a relationship with V but, as you know, the current iPhone is not compatible with V's network.
Additionally, V is going out of its way to establish relationships with other OSs, most notably its just announced Android marriage. I get the sense V is gonna try and work around Apple on the iPhone. The Tablet, tho? That's a new ballgame. -

Re: Differences between 3G and 3GS?
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 7:26 AMIT would be suicide for both Apple and ATT to ever consider that.
It's not happening anytime soon

Re: Differences between 3G and 3GS?
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 8:43 AMI wish it was true, but that's 100% speculative rumor. There's absolutely no support for it.

Alternatives to ATT
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 8:05 PM<< But I'm completely unwilling to sign another contract with AT&T >>
Jory, what carrier would you use? T-Mobile?
I would like to get off of ATT myself, and am willing to break my contract and pay the fee, but I'm not sure what carrier I would then use. -

Re: Alternatives to ATT
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 11:50 PMCurrently, there are only two GSM carriers in the US: AT&T and T-Mobile. Both suck ass. AT&T sucks because their network is crap, their service is even worse, and their arrogance has become unbelievable (which is saying a lot, since they were already PLENTY horrid as SBC, prior to taking the AT&T name over). T-Mobile sucks because they've got almost no coverage outside major metropolitan areas.
So until Apple releases a CDMA-based iPhone, there are no options, really. -

Re: Alternatives to ATT
Sat, October 10, 2009 - 10:50 PMI have to say that the value of the network really depends upon where you are. I was with Sprint for a long time, even though their service--in my case--was horrible. It was spotty where I lived. Sometimes I wouldn't get notification of a voicemail for days after it had arrived. The final straw was when I traveled to Minneapolis. When I got the phone I checked their map and it showed that the city was covered. But with the phone they sold me I couldn't get service anywhere in the city. Nowhere.
I changed to Verizon. It was a bit better and worked fine in Minneapolis, but when I moved to a new home, I had to walk outside to get service.
I switched to AT&T. Everything worked perfectly. I got an iPhone earlier this year and my only complaint is that I think the price for service is too high. I can see $50 for voice and data, including tethering, but I think the current price, with taxes, is unrealistically high.
I understand that AT&T doesn't do well in San Francisco or New York City. I wouldn't get an iPhone if I spend much time in either location. However, I don't.
Do some research and get the phone that works best with the service that works best for your needs. None of them are perfect. Whining in forums won't improve anything. -

Re: Alternatives to ATT
Sat, October 10, 2009 - 10:59 PMI would tend to agree with you except for the fact that I've not had ANY decent service with AT&T anywhere I've been in the US. That includes the entirety of the Bay Area, all of Southern California, Austin, TX, New York City, Denver, CO, Las Vegas, NV, and more. It's sucked pretty equally everywhere.
