You might want to hold off on buying a new iPhone if you don't mind waiting two months.

There are SO many things wrong with this article that it's almost not worth commenting, but here are a couple of my random thoughts:

    > When the 3G iPhone is introduced this summer, AT&T, the exclusive U.S. iPhone sales partner with Apple, will cut
    > the price by as much as $200, according to a person familiar with the strategy.

And with the rumor mill going full bore, CNN/Fortune have announced that the 3G iPhone will be released this very summer, regardless of the fact that no such announcement has been made by Apple, nor has there been any credible evidence to prove that Apple will indeed release a 3G iPhone this summer. It is pure speculation by a bunch of people who *really* want 3G iPhones. My bet is nearly zero of them have even used an iPhone or they'd realize that EDGE actually is reasonably okay for about 75% of what the iPhone is good for.

Do we want a faster net connection for the iPhone? Sure. But I also know that AT&T's 3G network is shit and only available in major cities right now. Somehow they're going to magically have amazing coverage by this summer? Yeah, and I'll believe that when we stop having "we suck slightly less" contests between the carriers and there's some actual governmental regulation to ensure quality of service (like in pretty much all European countries).

    > The average monthly wireless bill is around $50, so a phone company can recoup the phone’s cost in a matter of months.
    > The average iPhone user however, runs up a $100 tab each month due to the higher priced data and calling plan.

Huh!? I'd be willing to bet real money that the average AT&T iPhone customer doesn't spend much more than the $60/mo that the iPhone service requires. Personally, I spend an additional $5/mo so I can have unlimited SMS with other AT&T customers, but that's nowhere near $100/mo. With unlimited data, studies are already finding that iPhone users use the telephone portion of their device 25% less than regular mobile users. ( blog.wired.com/gadgets/20...ers-ta.html )

I pay around $90-95 a month. The $39.99 calling plan, plus the $20 data package, plus unlimited texts (another $~20?), plus whateverthehell else ends up on there (taxes, fees, taxfees, feetaxes, etc).

I've got three iPhones to pay for on the family plan. Two of us have the $5/mo unlimited SMS with other AT&T customers. The third has unlimited SMS for $20/mo. Our monthly bill is $218, including taxes and other fees. Between three people, that's still $73/mo.

Even if we *all* had unlimited SMS, it's still $88/mo, which is still well below $100/mo.

mine, with 1500 texts, on the basic 59.99 plan, ends up being 85.31/month. Close enough to 100. *ouch*

My wife and I each have I phones but I have all the bells and whistles while she has the basic and our monthly bill is about $180. I am happy with the level of service and the fact that I don't have any surprises at the end of each month.

you can email photos all day long, if you want to send or recieve multimedia text messages well your SOL.

I find it hard to believe that AT&T wouldn't offer the phone with a rebate instead of a subsidy. As it is you do all the work of activating the phone using iTunes and not in the store. The possibility of a rebate means that quite a few people will buy the phone fully intending to send all the paperwork in for the rebate and yet still forgetting or inevitably screwing up even the most foolproof process. This would allow AT&T to stimulate sales across all venues of distribution while allowing the opportunity to pick up more users... which is ultimately the reason the phone is locked to their network in the first place.

You can bet your bottom dollar that round 2 of the phone is going to be hardware locked and software locked against folks trying to hack it for other GSM networks. Although I'm not sure how they plan on keeping the euro versions from hitting the grey market and getting imported back into the states.

I pay about 70 dollars a month. Thats the cheapest calling plan (loving the rollover minutes), unlimited data, nights and weekends at 7p, with all the call service bells and whistles, SMS plan, state taxes, anti-terrorism fund, 911 surcharge, the tax fee, the fee fee and a bunch of other crap, it works out to about 90 a month. Every month, like clockwork. Since I work an office job, I just switch over to my skype phone during the day and only use my celly for personal calls outside the office on lunch and afterhours. I've got *PLENTY* of minutes in rollover.

Having spent upwards of $350 a month on unlimited voice only plans before I'd have to say I'm plenty happy with the plan I have now, and I'm glad our phones are finally catching up with what they've had in Europe for about a decade now.

Edge network is blazingly slow for surfing, but works decent enough keeping my email updated. And the fact I can look at real attachments without some hokey 3rd party software is keen. Luckily in the city some folks are still considerate enough to leave some wireless open so war walking is still possible. I have a spare wireless router in my DMZ just for that purpose.

Anyways good luck and happy podding!

By the way, do you happen to know the name of this feature? I called AT&T today asking about this, since I do most of my texting to folks on AT&T, but the woman I spoke to said nothing like this exists. There's 200 texts a month, 1500 texts a month, and unlimited, but not network-specific.

They have so many hidden "features" that it usually takes an hour of talking with anyone in order to find things like the $5/mo in-network unlimited SMS.

According to my bill, unlimited text messaging is called Media Max Unlimited. That's the $20/mo plan. And in-network unlimited is called Unlimited M2M Text. The bill's are so screwy, though, it's tough to know for sure.
