Iseum

public - created 01/05/06
This tribe exists to honor, learn about, and share experiences related to the Egyptian goddess Isis as she was known in ancient Greece and Rome. Isis was identified with Demeter (Ceres), as well as various other goddesses such as Artemis, Io, Ino Leukothea, Agatha Tyche (Fortuna), and Aphrodite (who was also referred to as Hathor or Nephthys). Eventually, she became regarded as the Universal Mother who contained within her All the gods and goddesses (Panthea). Her companions were Serapis/Osiris, Harpocrates/Horus, Bast, Anubis, the Dioscuri (twin sons of Zeus), and the Agathos Daemon ("Good Spirit", represented as a serpent). Isis was also known as far as Britain, due to the influence of the Roman Empire. It is believed that some of the symbolism, ritual, and philosophy of the Isiac religion was eventually adopted by Christianity, another foreign mystery cult. The temple of Isis was known as the Iseum.

The Consort of Isis, Serapis (Ausar-Apis, a combination of Osiris and the Apis Bull), was a god of grain, healing, the mysteries of life and death, and the underworld. He was equated with Zeus, Hades, Dionysos, Asklepios (Aesculapius), and Herakles (Hercules). In the early days of Christianity, it is believed that he was equated with Jesus as well.

All are welcome here, but please be respectful of the opinions and beliefs of others. The origins of Isis (Auset) in ancient Egypt may also be discussed, as well as comparative mythology and how Isis has been experienced in modern times. I highly recommend R.E. Witt's 'Isis in the Ancient World' for more information about the Isiac religion.
