Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 7:40 AMAh, Ted, you wouldn't happen to have anything to do with Global Musical Instruments, do you, hmmm? You sure have been promoting them a lot during your short time on Tribe. -
-
Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 3:14 PMOf course Geoff its me! I know, too much promoting. I promise to lay off that for a while and focus on learning more about doumbeks and the like. Practicing percussion really helps my bass playing, rhythmically. I am awed by some of these pro doumbek players I have been seeing on YouTube and such. Amazing stuff.
Don't worry, I DON'T want to be known as the business guy jerk, so I'll lay off the links. :0)

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 3:54 PM"Business Guy Jerk". Sounds like a good nickname for you, Ted. ;-)
It's okay, we welcome new people to Tribe, we just want to focus more on discussing the learning, performing and perfecting of the art. It's okay to let us know what you're vending, when you get new products, or if you're working on a show or event. Just keep it short and sweet. We don't want advertisements clogging the message boards. Other than that, welcome, and bring us your technique questions as you encounter them. -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 4:09 PMAmen! Thanks for welcoming me, despite my initial blatant business promoting presence. Y'all are alright! Hey, what do you think of this Issam fellow? Anyone see him live yet? Here in San Diego we have a fantastic doumbek player Frank Lazarro. You probably know of him already. He has a great band and has been involved in the San Diego music scene for years. He teaches too Elissa. Here is his website:
www.frankdrums.com
See, I'm not trying to sell anything! -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 5:42 PMThanks for the references, Ted. I met Frank at a tribal convention in the San Diego area last fall. We jammed a little and I was invited to play with his drum group in the show that night. He was very friendly. I've also taken workshops with Issam and seen him perform live. His work is top notch. Highly recommended if you get a chance! -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 1:30 AMIssam.. is ok. I wish he'd tour without those 'superstars' cause I'd like to catch him playing for the music not for the dancer... -
-
Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 7:34 AMMaybe if enough of us clogged up Mile's message boxes on Tribe, Facebook, and MySpace, he'd relent and give Issam 5 minutes to tear it up at a BDSS performance. Maybe not. :-)
I've heard him do that. It gives me the chill bumps just thinking about it. mmmmm -
-
Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 8:02 AMOne of the negatives of being managed, you are told what to play. The positives someone else does all the legwork to generate shows to perform at.

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 8:23 AMChandani, a dance instructor in Virginia Beach, gets Issam to come out to her studio once or twice each year, so I've had a lot of opportunity to hear him tear up solo or in small groups of other percussionists ... without the BDSS.
Just "OK," huh? Do you really mean "OK," or you mean better-than-OK, but you don't like what he DOES with his abilities?
I mean, if Issam is just "OK," the majority of other drummers wouldn't even be twitches of the meter's needle, I think. -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 11:02 AMJust to let everyone know we can all say who is great and who isnt but go to any cemetrery and no one has "drummer of the decade" "employee of the year" or any other such nonsense. I tire so much of having to listen to who is great and who isnt. Who are you to judge who is great and who isnt. Hopefully we all take our gifts and use them to make things better but we dont we sit and argue about who is better than another person.
I am not great I am just a person who likes to play the drums. All I can hope for is "Loving husband and Father" on my tombstone -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 11:57 AMWhoa, hang on there ...
First of all, this is not an argument, this is the beginning of a hopefully mature, thoughtful, articulate and critical discussion about a major artist and performer in our "scene" ... Why you would want to intervene here and try to stop that from happening is totally beyond me.
Second of all, people discuss the relative genius and the occasiopnal shortcomings of various painters, writers, poets, singers, rappers, scuptors, playwrights, photographers, actors, comedians, film directors, et cetera ... When did Middle Eastern percussionists become sacrosanct, off-limits and above critique?
Third of all ... "Who am I to judge, who are you to judge, who is he to judge?" That reasoning makes NO sense at all and never has. I am not a film director or a blues-rock guitar icon, but I am also not an absolute incoherent moron incapable of developing a well-formed and articuilate opinion ... I can make a pretty good case about why I don't like the works of Quentin Tarantino or Eric Clapton, and even make a good stand on why I prefer Atom Egoyan and Thurston Moore. Hell, we actually learn things from these comparisons! The X Versus Y style of analysis is a very handy tool that teaches us how to prioritize our values, identify and remove the unwanted things and focus on the good stuff.
Lastly, there is a time to worry about what goes on your tombstone, and there is a time to focus on the here and now, while we are actually LIVING. Whay is it more important to have "Loving husband and Father" written on your tombstone, after you're just one big maggot-slurpee, than it is to actually BE those things NOW. Forget all of this babble about cemeteries and tombstones.
Honestly, I don't want to live in a world where everybody is special, where we all have "gifts" with which to "make things better" (whatever that means), we all pretend that we're all equal at everything, nobody wants to risk hurting someone else's feelings, and we all start squirming when we start to disagree about something. No, thanks. -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 2:28 PMI think Issam is extremely talented, but this is coming from a novice. Regardless, the doumbek is a great instrument, and I love the posts you guys send of your excellent talents. All of you are fantastic players. Keep it up!
Music will save the World!! -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 8:27 PMI have been fortunate to experience him playing for the music. His talent runs so much deeper than the Superstars and he has numerous compositions and collaborations with other musicians. I doubt gangin' up on Mr. Copeland would sway him to relent on those 5 precious minutes for the numerous drummers who come to see Issam 1st, the Superstars second. I am so glad he is coming back to Ya Halla in August. We get him for 3 days.....Woohoo! -
-
Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 12:11 AMYa Halla looks amazing! I'm really bummed, though, because it's the same time as Mendocino camp. It really was a battle trying to decide which I wanted more. You Texas-area folks are incredibly lucky and I hope you take advantage of the great drum classes. Issam and Tobias both rock! -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Thu, July 16, 2009 - 9:54 PMEllisa, I just had to laugh! I have looked wistfully at Mendocino camp but it always runs the same time as Ya Halla. It is like...girls with curly hair wish their's was straight and those with straight want to try curly LOL
But I would pick classes with Issam over Mendocino everytime.
BTW, I have played and really like the Soloist. It is like the best of both worlds. I have not tried a SkynDeep on my GEFs or Souhail's Sumbati but that is in the works.

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 1:24 PMI went to he BDSS show in the UK and Issam plays a much larger part in the show than before and really enjoyed his performances, he is a "great" drummer with clean precise technique and a great teacher. If I get any where near to his ability I'll be happy but I am never quite happy with my drumming and thats where I/we all strive to get a technique like the drummers that inspire us, one of them being Issam. -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Sun, July 19, 2009 - 12:35 PMYeah, that was sarcasm. Or irony... At the same time I prefer a little looseness in the playing that (at least for Egyptians) has been lost in the era of drum machine/sequencers etc. Listen to the classic bellydance stuff from the 70's and 80's and then from the last 10 years. Can you hear the difference? Never mind the tone...
Also, while I appreciate 'the greats' of any era I find that with 20+ years of playing and studying I am less likely to put anyone on a pedestal these days. Just sayin' -
-
Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 3:18 PMNo pedestals, just style preferences. Different styles for different stuations and needs, too. Speaking of the 70's: Steve Kouyoumjian and Leon Manoogian, wow! Love that George Abdo! Well, seeing as how this is Issam's 'house' I will that discussion to the MEP Tribe LOL -

Re: Play the drum Issam plays!
Sun, August 2, 2009 - 4:05 PMI love Issam's playing (as well as oh so many others) and I am a complete convert to the SkynDeep heads (I have them on all of my derbekkes).
Issam plays the Ergo drum so beautifully and it is a pleasure to hear, but I never really liked mine and sold it. It was alright, but I have so many other drums that I like much more.
An artists choice of instrument is a personal one based on what they want and like to hear in their music. For Issam and many others, this drum may be exactly what they want and need. I affirm that the SkynDeep head is just about the best development in the Middle Eastern percussion world in recent years and has giuven many of us a drum sound that that we could only get in the past with a Nile Perch head. It is an absolute winner.
For my tastes, I will stay will some of my older heavy caste MOP aluminum derbekkes fitted with a SkynDeep head. It is a winning combination.
For people too far from a place that they can select a drum from Egypt or the other Arabic countries, the Remo drums are okay. They are consistent and sound fine (not the best in my opinion, but good enough). At least they are consistent and all sound alike, they're just real light in weight and feel weird and don't have the resounding round volume of the heavier aluminum or ceramic drums.
For drummers like Issam, they could play an old oatmeal container and make it sound great. -
