Will be attending Raqs Brittania in Blackpool UK tomorrow. We are trading with our stall doing henna/jewellary/clothes. BUT the highlight of the weekend has to be Issam's Workshop that I will be doing on Saturday. I'm doing his int/adv workshop and can't wait, I'm sooooo excited to be taught by him and will let you all know how it went. Der!!!! you guys probably already have been to his workshops but I wanted to share my excitement !!!!!!!!!!!!!

seeking photos from March 10 Charlotte Issam drum jam at Patou Bistro

Hey -

I was at the jam and got to be up on stage backing up Issam along with a couple of the other students, but didn't get any pix! Did anyone go and take pictures? I was there alone and forgot to bring my camera in and hand it to someone. Sigh ... be a hero! Gimme pix!

On a side note the workshop was great. My hands are a bit sore though. I'm really motivated to practice, which is the part that counts I think.

About Issam:
On a June day a talent was born, it was Issam. Issam showed his love to music and particularly Tablah at an early age. His potential was discovered by few world renowned Tablah players whom Issam had a chance to learn from. While developing his own style in the musical field, he pursued an education earning a Masters Degree in Mathematics from the University Of Damascus. Rhythm and equations dominated his life. Issam acquired a vast well of knowledge about the middle eastern music and rhythms by associating with different music professionals in different regions in the Middle East. Issam established a new academic approach to the Tablah when he taught at the Music Institute In Damascus for nine years. Issam became very well known in the Middle East that gave him the honor to play for some of the most famous star singers and belly dancers. To name few he played for Molhem Barakat , Issam Rajji, Samir Yazbeck, Mohammad Gammal, Rageb Alama, Tony Hanna, Azzar Habib and Joseph Azzar. In 1983 Issam represented the Dancing Folklore Culture Group in London with Asala Nasri; followed similarly in 1985 and 1987 in Moscow and Algeria respectively.
Because of Issam's strong academic knowledge and his superior talent, he was chosen to write music for multiple musical shows, TV commercials and theater plays. He was distinguished for writing the music for two popular theater plays Kalegola and The Story of Jason and Meedia.
Issam is an impressive player on stage as well as in recording studios. He has a unique characteristic, he plays with the same quality and energy level at the beginning of the concert as at the end. In the year 2000, Issam was chosen to play with supper star Sting in the Western tour of the US. Sting was impressed with Issam's ability to record in the studio first take.

Moria Chappell teaches a unique workshop that incorporates two important aspects of bellydance as performance art (1) the dance (2) the look. Moria’s enigmatic stage presence is born form a history of training in San Francisco bellydance technique that combines the Salimpour method, stylization from The Indigo, Fat Chance posturing, and circus art. Moria’s workshops include bellydance conditioning, layering technique and drills, unusual abdominal isolations, Neo-Tribal combinations, tribal choreography and an elected sub-topic. The exercises and drills of the conditioning portion of class are designed to strengthen stamina in bellydance technique and push the dancer through burn-out to their next personal level. Instruction will emphasize level changes, layering and traveling movements, a 20 minute shimmy drill, and flowing yoga for strength and flexibility for warm-up and cool down. The first 2 hours focus on drills & combinations, 3rd hour tribal choreography, and the 4th hour features the chosen subtopic. Subtopics include: 1. stage make-up secrets, 2. costuming secrets and stage presence, 3. tribal fusion floorwork and flexibility, 4. poi and props. 11:00 am – 12:30 pm: Beginning Drumming workshop for Drummers.
Essential Techniques & Rhythms for the Tabla: This class is geared for musicians and will cover basic techniques & drills for the tabla as well as an introduction to Middle Eastern Rhythms. All levels from novice to intermediate and advanced will benefit from Issam's
detailed teaching style.

1:00 – 2:30 pm: Intermediate/ Advanced Drumming workshop for Drummers. Issam will teach intermediate/ advanced strokes and techniques for the tabla. Issam will also teach a formula for creating drum solos for dancers. ***Attendees of this workshop must possess basic drumming skills***

3:30 – 5:00 pm: Middle Eastern Rhythms and Drumming for Dancers
This workshop is geared primarily toward the dancer. Issam will teach the rhythms that are most common in Middle Eastern music so that the dancer may understand the structure of the rhythms and the sounds of the tabla. This knowledge will improve both your choreographed and improvisation performances. ***Attendees do not

I just wanted to say that Issam (and of course all the dancers) were absolutely the greatest during Bellydance Superstars in Buffalo. I was able to get a picture with Issam and have him sign his cd for me. He tells me to practice with my new cd...HA! I can barely keep up with the slow stuff. I'll keep practicing but it's going to be a loooooong time!

I apologize for being remise. I limit my e-mails to Issam to every couple of months due his very hectic schedule. As soon as I read Jeff's post about the impending release of the 'Skin Deep' by Remo, I e-mailed Issam about upcoming release dates.

Remo's 'Skin Deep' synthetic fishskin heads (hooray for biotechnology!) is scheduled for general release by the NNAM in 2007. Jeff, from the Dumbek Fever Tribe got hold of one already....I'm jealous! ;)

Accordiing to Issam, the Instructional DVD is scheduled for release in June 2007.

Ok, if you have any hesitation whatsoever about taking a drum workshop with Issam...as we say in New Yawk...fuggettdaboutit!!!! Issam 's class was fun! And so interesting that the time literally flew by...wow! As for me, I was way too shy to sign up...but my drum partner Jeff bought me a ticket and basically said: You're going! I'm SO GLAD I did! So don't be shy...find out when the next workshop is and GO!!!!!! I promise you won't reget it!

2006 Ya Halla, Ya'll Review

I posted this as a reply on the Middle Eastern Percussion Site. Thought some of you might be interested..........

Keep tabs on isisandthestardancers.com. Issam has given 6 workshops in DFW over the past 3 years. I had only been drumming for a few months the first time he came. I have worked so hard on my left, it is better than my right. Gotta fix that!

Issam's main focus is technique and timing. He is a human metronome! Take 1 or 2 techniques and perfect them before working on another. When practiciing your roll, do not stop when you feel the burn! Slow down to a crawl if necessary. Then increase your speed to the maximum. Always keeping PERFECTLY spaced beats. Practicing every day is best. At least several times/week to equal a minimum of 2 hours. He really cares about teaching those interested and dedicated to the art form, working individualy with students and extendiing class when time permits.
A good drum is very important. I didn't have one until I bought a Gawharet El Fan from Issam. (See the Art of the Drum Solo DVD where Issam takes Sonya shopping in Cairo. He played 16 drums before selecting 4 to bring back) I was finally sounding fair on my RF when I bought it. The immediate difference made the studio instructors take notice............................

Not only is he the Wassan Pharoun, he is an all round great person. I appreciate the mentoring he has given to our group, The Drums of Isis. Did anyone else from this tribe attend Ya Halla???? What did you think of his new signature drum??? I bought one and I love it!

BDSS London..

I saw Issam and the BDSS last night (Friday 2nd june). I am amazed everytime I see/hear him play.One word...WOW!!! He revved up the audience encouraging everyone to join in, and to feel part of the show...My mum, Auntie and I all had an excellent night!
I lurve Issam!!...yep that mega loud wolf-whistle at the end was me...just couldnt resist any longer...sorry, so cute!! X

Issam in Vegas!

I finally got to meet him; we went to the BDSS rehearsals, and he was there.. gulp.... I was shy, I wanted to say hello to him, but was too chicken. My friend and I just stared. So, when we had to leave, I wanted to say good bye to Miles, and Issam and I spoke a bit
Then, before the show on Saturday, Miles wanted us to be interviewed by the documentary guy, so we all waited in Issam's dressing room. So, when Issam came in, he was kind of shocked to see Miles, my friend, and I just sitting there, but he was sooo nice.
And he is HOT. I asked him if I could take photos of him for the Issam tribe I am on, and he blushed. So, the photos are forthcoming.
We sat and talked about bellydance, Dina, and lots of ther things. He is a very intelligent and happy person. When the doucmentary guy didn't show up, we left, it was only about 10 minutes before the show was to start.
I just wanted this tribe to know that he is truly wonderful and incredibly attractive. He's got it all, babyyyyy!

I've signed up for a drum workshop with Issam at Raqs Britannia in June. The nearest drum techer to me is in Basingstoke, which is a bit of a trek so I'm largely teaching myself. I am really looking forward to a workshop with Issam. Any ideas what I should do to prepare however? It is a beginner's level workshop so hopefully I won't get too lost.

So far I have the "Wassan Pharaoun: The Pharaoh of Rhythm" & "Tabel ya Issam" & " The Dancing Drum". Plus what he has done with the Desert Roses...

Does anyone else have any other's... I actually don't have "The Dancing Drum", but I know my hubby will want it.. He is a huge fan...
