I have a HP Pavillion dv 6000t notebook pc, windows xp service pac 2, 64bit. Intel celeron M processor.
Hope that's enough info for you. My CPU fan is not working and my PC was over heating until I got this external fan pad to
put underneath. any idea how to get it working again, I had to do a system restore a few months ago and after that it stopped working, I thing the driver for it was wiped out when I did the restore. I had a virus and my so called anti virus program didn't detect it so that may have messed up the driver as well. any thoughts, because I really don't want to take it apart to install a new one unless I have to,

There have been no postings here for MONTHS. If we aren't going to use this space, it might as well not be here.

Post your reasons for keeping the tribe active as replies to this Thread.

If I get no responses by the end of March, I will disband the tribe in April.

Does anyone have any to recommend?

I know of

Linkme.com.au; which is Australia and "good" if you are local, plus
Linkedin.com; better, but global.

I have not found either that useful (aka no $$ or good likely futurecolleges), but I guess this is all a new area.

We haven't been very active as a tribe, lately.

If anyone has (or needs) career advice in our industry, is in need of a second opinion, rants/raves, or other information, your postings are welcome. We have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with one another.

Be aware, however, that there may be some areas where a reply would constitute a "billable" event, so there may be cases that no reply is possible in an open forum like this.
Thanks all!

What more could we be doing as a tribe to help each other in our careers, our businesses, or our (technology) passions?

I'm asking partly to see if we can stir up a bit more discussion, and partly to see if I as the new moderator need to be handling anything differently...

Thanks in advance for your input.

Need Web and Hosting Assistance

I webmaster a simple business site.

I have a couple of problems. The company we've been hosted on (web site and email) has been sold several times and they're reliability has gotten pretty bad. Our Web site and email goes down periodically. They moved our site from one server to another several months ago and all our secure scripts no longer worked. They still haven't been able to fix it. Currently, our Email goes down regularly - like right now... and I've still been unable to get hold of a support person (on hold for the past 2 hours).

I also need some web design stuff - especially related to anything beyond basic HTML.

What I'd like to do is find a solid local SF Bay Area hosting service - or at least one that is extremely reliable for a business. And if there is a problem - the opportunity to contact someone that has a clue as to what they're doing in a reasonable amount of time.

Any suggestions or if you are the one - please let me know.

Thanks,
Virus, Spyware, Adware, Dialer etc Knowledge You Need To Know

When it comes to internet security many people have little knowledge of the difference between different terms and their meaning (i.e. Virus, Spy ware, Ad ware, Dialer etc.). All these terms can be given one collective term: "malware". Below is what each of these terms actually mean:

Virus
A virus is a piece of software that attempts to replicate itself and spread by attaching itself to files. Its severity ranges from displaying messages, deleting files, changing files or (rarely) corrupting your hard drive. A virus cannot spread without user interaction.

Viruses often attach to executable files (.exe files) so that when the file is opened so is the virus which can do whatever it was designed to do.

Spy ware / Ad ware

Spy ware may come in different forms, but is any program that monitors what a user does such as logging all their keystrokes, what websites they go on and often reporting this back to the person who wrote the program.

Ad ware on the other hand displays a number of pop up ads. It may work similar to spy ware by watching what a user views on the web then displaying pop-ups based on this.

Dialer

A dialer is a program that only affects those on a dial up connection. It is a piece of software that redirects to premium online numbers and causing the users’ phone bill to increase dramatically. They are often downloaded from certain illicit sites.
Anyone, on a broadband connection would no be affected as these do not connect to a telephone line to connect to the internet, but have their own dedicated line.

Keyloggers

These often come under the term spy ware. They monitor every key stroke a user makes and then reports it back to the person who wrote the software. This can then be used to identify websites a user may have visited and find out the users password and username. This often used for online banking sites.

Trojan Horse

A Trojan horse is a program that attempts to pass itself off as a legitimate program. Unlike a virus it cannot replicate itself. In some cases a Trojan may attempt to pass itself off as a virus checker, but actually introduces viruses onto the system.

Bot / Botnet

A bot is a computer that has software running on it that allows a remote computer to control it, often installed by someone hacking the computer or by the user installing it themselves via other software.

Bots are often used to send spam and hack other computers which makes it appear that the attack comes from this computer rather than the remote computer that is controlling it making it more difficult to trace.

If there is a large collection of compromised computers linked together this is reffered to as a botnet.

Rootkit

A rootkit is a program that buries itself deep into the system, and is often extremely hard to remove. It starts up every time your system does and is usually loaded as a base part of the operating system, before the user interface making it more difficult to detect. A rootkit may install other software, new processes and perform other tasks anonymously.

Logic bomb / Time bomb

Often used against a business. These may be a piece of software set to activate at a certain time or when something happens. It may trigger if an employer was to be fired, when this was added onto the computer system the software detects this then activates itself to do whatever it was programmed to do.

Worms

A worm is a program that attempts to replicate over a computer network. This may be through emails or internet etc. It may perform malicious tasks such as crashing a computer, etc.

if you have any questions on how to remove these or any other useful information just post

I am a Windows person, and recently started a telephone tech support position assisting people who have difficulty getting online with their laptops at hotels.

However, occasionally, I get a person with a Mac OS 10.2, 10.3 or 10.4 operating system. I know enough to help with a few simple issues, but I'm looking for a good tutorial, or screenshot source, to give me a more thorough understanding of how the Mac systems connect to networks, both with the Airport card, and the Ethernet card.

Anyone know of any good websites where I can improve my knowledge base? How about a good tutorial book that thoroughly covers network troubleshooting on Mac computer?

If anyone knows about windows XP, I could really use some help please. Here's the problem. I can't change my wallpaper on my desktop. I can change the color, but nothing else. When I go to display properties, I can see a list of pictures to put on there, but I can't open them, or move the screen, or browse for new pictures, or change the screen, oh and I can't even find the preset pictures to change it to. It also only does this on 1 windows account the others work fine. I have run spybot and adaware 6.0, as well as Norton and the pc doctor. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mental midget#2 ( the idea man)== I know. Now that we have most of the bugs worked out, and everyone knows how to use it.. Let's change everything again, and this time we'll make it impossible to run things without a download, and here's the best part, the download won't work with any browsers!!

Boardroom erupts with laughter.

High school educated guy(aka the new guy)==But why would we do that? Don't we care about our customers?

Mental midget #1==BANG somebody clean that idiots blood off my floor. Now what are we gonna call the new system?

Mental midget#2 I know we'll call it Beta ,cause it sounds retro, and most people that remember beta tapes sucked ,are dead.

Something like that I think. And in 8 months it will start all over again makes you want to scream. in fact I think I will AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is ADSL< SDSL<IDSL?

ADSL- This is a shared line service, or a connection that shares copper with your phone service. Download speed are much higher than your upload speeds and range in combination by ISP. For ex. at Covad we offer 1.5/128,1.5/384,3.0/768, and 6.0/768.
ADSL can also run over whats called a dedicated line or black copper. This is a phone line that is in your house right now, but is not in use at the moment. The advantage of a dedicated ADSL is a more reliable connection. Dedicated line services can prove to be more cost effective due to the fact that you dont have to pay your local phone company for the line, and there is no phone number affiliated with the line.

SDSL- This is a service that offers symetrical upload and download speeds. It runs over a dedicated line and is used primarily by medium to large companies to handle there daily internet operations. Speeds range by vendor, and range from 144/144k to 1.5/1.5M. At Covad, we offer 144, 384,768,1.1,1.5 speeds. This type of service carries service level agreements that provide Guarantees on speeds, uptime, delay, and delivery of the service.

IDSL- unlike A or SDSL, IDSL or sometimes called ISDN can run over copper AND fiber lines. It has no distance limitations over fiber. This is an option for those you cant get cable or DSL and dont want to deal with the problems of satellite. Speeds are not as great as other types of DSL but is a great option for businesses and residential customers who need somthing faster than dialup.

I hope this Fact sheet help some out there that are unsure about DSL technology. Please feel free to comment or add to this post as you see fit. Only sincere and professional responses and questions please.
