Pot luck's a great idea. However i'm going to be coming down from Dmitri's handfasting the night before so i'm not going to have time to make anything. Just sign me up for something i can pick up along the way, OK?

I think that the potluck is a great idea! I also went to this very cool shower in which everyone brings a bead. Each person puts their bead on the string and offers a blessing to the child. The person tells a story of their childhood that gives an example of what they want for the child. An example of this would be, "My wish for you is that you never lose the imagination of a child." Afterwards, you give it to the expecting parents. It sounds pretty hippy dippy but it really was quite beautiful. The couple who did this has it hanging near rthe baby's crib....

Disgusting but fun baby shower game

      Mon, April 16, 2007 - 2:38 PM
Get a bunch of candy bars. Melt each one in a diaper. Everyone passes them around and has to guess which kind of candy bar is in the diaper. You can smell. You can taste. Pseudo scat games...woo hoo!

when i threw my sis baby shower we did a clothespin game. every guest gets a pin and if someone busts you saying the word "baby" they take your clothespin. whoever gets the most clothespins wins a small prize of some sort (I made little craft thingys to give away, you know like a terracotta flower pot from the dollar store and painted it)

also, depending on the crowd, we got a bunch of $1 baby bottles and filled them with beer (if its a no liquor party type thing then you can do some other type of liquid) and then have a drinking contest of who can chug the fastest. winner gets prize and/or bragging rights. (if you wanna be gross about it you should put real formula in there. we used beer and the guys LOVED it! mum-to-be obviously doesn't participate)

there was also a really funny one where everyone had one minute to change a diaper and dress a babydoll blindfolded.

as for the bead idea it is very sweet however some people would rather not be put on the spot or speak aloud or whatever (bunch of shy people at the party) so I made a little guest book where you put your name and a little message to the baby or the parents or both! that way you can remember exactly what the story is and who it is from.

i have all the babyshower planning stuff/leftover material from the showers i threw for my sis incase she popped out another one (oh yeah and she is) if you guys need/want my stuff your welcomed to use it.

I've seen this done with baby foods. you plop a decent amount of whatever babyfood into each diaper, and you have teams of people trying to identify it by smell and looks alone. peas, green beans, and broccoli look a lot alike when theyre blended up. same for squash, carrots, etc! And they ALL look like baby poop.

I LOVED the clothespin game at the shower i went to...of course, I ended up stealing everyone's cause they couldn't shut up. We picked a top 5 words something like these:
        baby
        mom
        dad
        cute
        born

there's also "how many toilet paper sheets does it take to get around mom's tummy - the closest wins a prize of some type.

You could have a "How many tylenol are in the babyfood jar", referring to the headaches they will have. (or just jellybeans in a baby bottle)

        Found some more activities online:
        "Feed the Baby"
Have one partner be "the baby" and the other partner be the parent. See who can feed an entire jar of baby food, using a small spoon, to their partner the fastest. For added laughs, make the "parent" hold the spoon in their mouth while playing and make them hold their hands behind their backs! You'll want to take pictures of this one!

        Time capsule
Instruct guests to bring an item to the shower for baby's time capsule. Have guests write a letter, and place their item in the time capsule, then put away for safekeeping until baby is older.

(this one's icky, but at least we can get naked)
        Bobbing for Binkies
Fill a large container with water or substance such as pudding or oatmeal. Place several pacifiers inside the water/mixture and without using their hands, have guests try to retrieve as many as possible with their mouths.

        Test your baby IQ
Write or print a list of trivia questions concerning babies and parenting (we will have a list for you to print soon) and award a prize to the guest(s) with the most correct answers. Keep an answer key handy so you will know the answers yourself!

        5 and 10
Give guests 10 seconds to name 5 things in a selected category (such as baby food flavors, baby bath items, things in a diaper bag, things moms tell their kids). To make it more challenging, have a set list of replies on an answer key and only award points when the player's answer matches what you have.

        Guess who
Instruct guests to bring a baby photo of themselves to the shower. Place all photos in a focal point, such as the coffee table, and have guests try to match each baby photo to the guest they belong to. The winner is the person with most correct guesses.

        Alphabet name game
Start the game by saying a baby name that starts with A. Have the person next to you continue with a B name, the next person with a C name and so forth. If a player cannot give a name within a couple seconds during their turn, they are out of the game. Keep going until one player remains. This gets tricky after a few rounds, especially with Q, X and Z names!

        Mad libs
Write a silly story about the parents-to-be and baby. Take out random words, then make a list for guests to replace the words you took out (without letting them hear the story first). Ask guests to write down a random noun, verb, pronoun, adjective, color, name, etc to match the missing words. Collect the guests answers, and read the story aloud, using the new words. These can get very funny, so you may want to keep the stories in your scrapbook after the party!

        Memory tray game
Set out a tray of around 40 baby items (more or less if desired) in front of your guests for about a minute or two. Take the tray and items away, then have guests try to name (on paper) as many of the items as they can remember. Prize awarded to the person who remembered all, or the most, of the items.

        Price is right
Have guests try to determine the actual store price of 10-15 baby products. Prize awarded for most correct guesses.

        Mommy or Daddy?
Come up with a list of things that happened to either mom or dad-to-be (ie : broke their leg, had the measles, was on the debate team, had kermit the frog sheets) and have guests determine if each event happened to mom or dad. Prize awarded to the player with the most correct answers.

        Songs/movies with baby
Give guests a time limit to name as many songs/movies with the word Baby in the title as possible.

        Scattergories
Give guests a minute or two to name as many things in a certain category as possible (ie: 2 minutes to write down baby names beginning with C)

        Baby football pool -
Instead of making bets on the point spread of the big game, have your guests bet a dollar on the date, time, birth weight and etc of baby-to-be's birth. After baby is born, the person who guessed correctly can be given a nice prize. Money collected is given to the parents-to-be or used on a gift for them.

And for the record, i love the potluck idea!
