"From Funky Fusion to Cutting Edge Cabaret (C)", Yasmine, who has an extensive background in ballet, tap, jazz, & Middle Eastern dance, is the studio owner of Mid-East Dance by Yasmine. Yasmine spent much of 2004 touring with the Bellydance Superstars performing in major cities around the United States as well as Barcelona, Spain and after touring teamed up with Master Tabla Player Issam Houshan in offering Drum & Dance workshops. Yasmine is well recognized for her dynamic and precise movements and her ability to portray the music, which she carefully extends to her students - grooming them for their own spectacular performances. As well as being a sought after instructor due to her personable and fun teaching approach, Yasmine's distinct performance style is often referred to as "Cutting Edge Cabaret."

Featured on the cover of the May/June 2007 issue of Zaghareet, Yasmine also appears in IAMED's Bellydance-O-Rama vol. 3 DVD and appeared as a featured artist for Dr. Samy Farag's 2008 CD Release Gala Show in Texas. Got “Magic” Hips? Rhythmic Hips = “Magic” Hips! (2 hours) SATURDAY (12:15 - 2:15)
Dancers will learn to interpret the sounds of the drums by drilling some of Yasmine’s favorite techniques and movements to Middle Eastern Rhythms to accentuate the “Dums” and “Teks”! Drilling dance movement to these rhythms will help the dancer gain more control and to feel the rhythm. Then we will put these techniques to the test with “The Rhythmic Soul Train” Exercise and “The Battle of Rhythmic Hips!”

Zills & Drills (2 hours) SATURDAY (2:30 - 4:30)
Drills for combining finger cymbal work with dance movement and working with various rhythms. This class also leads into a Full Zill Drill routine that can be used for practice or group performance using the method of set Patterns to accompany music mixed with dance movement combinations!

Funky Fusion Combos to Choreography (4 hours) SUNDAY (10:00 - 2:00)
The combos presented in this class includes some cabaret technique mixed with a spicy blend of tribal style and alternative belly dance fusion topped with Yasmine’s own Funky Flare that can be used for a variety of modern routines! Funky Fusion blends the power and the beauty of tribal and cabaret! This class will include technique & drilling several combinations for the first portion of the class and then applying these combinations to lead into one of Yasmine’s own Funky Fusion routines.

Asharah and Mab, Just Mab workshops in Columbia

April's Alternacirque show will be graced with two of Washington D.C.'s finest alternative performers: Tribal Bellydancer Asharah is returning to the Art Bar stage, and we are absolutely thrilled to have dancer, fire performer and sideshow queen Mab, Just Mab bringing her vaudeville hilarity along for the ride. On Friday, April 24th, both performers will join us at Art Bar for our 9:30 show. 1211 Park St. in downtown Columbia, SC, no cover, the bar is 21+ but we're hopefully performing outside, barring bad weather.

And since they'll be in town anyway, we figured we would pick their professional brains about their craft while they were here. In other words, WORKSHOPS!

Workshops take place on Saturday, April 25th. We're in the process of confirming location, but it's likely to be at the Lexington Old Mill. More information as it comes.

Technique Intensive with Asharah-- 12-3 PM, $60

Join Asharah for three hours of intense practice aimed at polishing your bellydance technique and building strength and stamina. Asharah is known for her clean technique and muscular execution , and in this workshop she will share with you tips and tricks for sharpening hard movements like hip work and chest locks and for deepening and intensifying smooth movements like undulations and Mayas. She will also share with you a few of her signature robotic movements to add spice to your bellydance movement vocabulary.

While there is no shortage of classes on "How To...", it's time to take it to the next level! Take those skills you have painstakingly learned, and work them into a great show!

This class covers how to build a "bit", and then how to take the bits and build a set and a show! We will also develop a toolbox of elements to get the most out of your audience, heckler handling techniques, and much much more. All performers welcome, not just bellydancers. If you're a sideshow artist, fire eater, hula hooper, host, emcee, poet, magician or improv comedian, come along and improve your presentation.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Jahara Phoenix Spectacular. I'm still trying to get over my head cold-turned-sinus infection - alas, the show must go on.

We are looking into new venues for next year - venues where every seat can see the dancers! Also, we are working to improve the ticket sale process - and will be adding a matinee. If you have any great venue suggestions we would love to hear them.

The Jahara Phoenix Dance Company will be opening for Shawn Mullins
on Friday, July 25th at 7:30pm on the Historic Lawrenceville Square
in Lawrenceville, GA.

From May to September, at 8:00 p.m., on the fourth Friday of each
month, concerts will be held on the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse
lawn. Each concert will offer various styles of music including
blues, jazz, rock, folk, country and bluegrass, Motown, swing and
more!

Shawn Mullins' vibrant new album, honeydew (released March 11th on

It is a long standing tradition to have an out of town guest at our summer Red Light show and to invite them to teach a workshop....this year we have TWO! The workshops will be taking place at Red Light (very exciting!) so space is limited to 20 people for each workshop. The workshops WILL sell out (you learned your lesson at TribalCon, right?) so register early.

The schedule for during the day will be:

Registration will take place at 12 noon at Red Light Cafe.

12:30-2:30 Burlesque-esque with Onca- Get in touch with your vaudeville attitude, with bad*ss strengthening drills, work on dance combos, theatre excersizes, and more! How to walk, emote, etc...Now that you know how to dance, how do you PERFORM?

~The Mezmer Society was founded in autumn 2007, debuting at the Yard Dogs Road show in Asheville and and this year they were invited to teach and perform at TribalFest in CA! Onca is the Director of Baraka Mundi and August is the President of the Accordian club, together they are the Mezmer Society, fusing the spirit of the speak easy with bellydance.

2:30-4:30pm ATS formations, fades and combos with Devyani!- Our favorite subjects!!!

~Devyani performs pure American Tribal Style Bellydance (ATS) in theFatChanceBellyDance format. ATS is a modern style of bellydance with roots in Egyptian bellydance and stylistic influences from Spain and India . The dancers interact through a system of non-verbal cues to create a fresh, high energy performance unique to each venue and performance. This style is the launching pad for many Tribal Fusion groups. All pieces performed tonight will be in the traditional ATS improvisational style perfected by creator, Carolena Nericcio.

Who should come: This meetup is for everyone who likes to get outdoors and meet with others in a fun, energizing, creative, and musical setting.

Why: Sign up some friends so you can dance and drum with people you know already in your life. This is an event where everyone can find a place for themselves.

Meeting Description: Drum & Dance in Gwinnett heads outdoors (finally) for some rhythm and dance with nature. This month we are meeting at the Town Center Park in Suwanee, on the corner of Buford Hwy and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd. This is a 10 acre park with fountains and an amphitheater. We are going to carve out our own space and create a good time for ourselves. No matter how many of us show up, we will likely attract evening park visitors to join in with us (in fact, it will be encouraged). This is a great opportunity to take what we do out into the larger community.

We will meet up in the parking lot just before 7, locate a place for us, and set up our circle. I cannot bring enough chairs, so everyone is encouraged to bring something to sit on for themselves. This could be a chair or perhaps a blanket. Or, perhaps you have a strap and you want to stand and drum. Whatever works for you. As usual we will have extra instruments, but bring one if you've got one.

I suggest you get there by 7 as we will only be playing until 8:30. It's close to dark by then. No alcohol is allowed in the park. Feel free to bring cold drink though in case it's a warm evening.

Tell your friends about this and encourage them to bring the family. We will have a great time and as some of you may already know, there's nothing like drumming outdoors.

Tassels of all shapes and sizes for hair, hips, or elsewhere- bring
a couple links of embroidery floss and we will share colors. Yarn
will be available for sell or bring some of your own liking.

UGA Bellydance Club end of the semester Hafla May 2: Call for performers

The UGA Bellydance Club will host our end of the semester hafla on Friday May 2 at Little Kings Club in downtown Athens. Show will start at 9 pm and be followed by fire dance on the patio. Please email me at jaidra@uniqbyjaidra.com if you are interested in performing. Please send performer(s) names, troupe name, song name, song time, and props used as well as any other information that you feel I need to know. We're asking soloists to limit 5 minutes and troupes to limit themselves to 8 minutes. There are a limited number of spaces, and first come, first serve. If you are interested in doing any sort of fire performance, please let me know and we'll discuss safety requirements.

We will be asking for a suggested donation of 2 dollars at the door, half of which will be donated to a local children's charity. We're also hoping to have a drum circle for intermission and maybe after the show, so if you have drums, zills, spoons, or anything else noisy that you would like to bring, the joyful art of making music will be highly encouraged.

Ashley Bennett: This workshop will be focused, primarily, on stage presence and fluid motion - with a concentration on arm and hand movements. A certified yoga instructor, Ashley typically begins and ends each workshop with enough yoga to warm up the body to support flexibility, and then slow it down again to prevent aching and soreness for the "morning after." Alchemy: In this workshop, the emphasis will be on floorwork: toning and building the muscles necessary for safe, strong, and controlled floorwork, introducing new movement to your repertoire, and learning how to incorporate floorwork into improvisational performances for the solo or group dynamic. We will also cover the "no-nos", what to consider to keep your floorwork from devolving into a peep show, and how to comport yourself to best display your strength and mastery to the audience. All of this will be presented in the same lighthearted, safe, accepting atmosphere Alchemy is known for in its classes. Oracle was named Mrs. North Gwinnett County in 2007 and is excited to be competing in the 2008 Mrs. Georgia pageant. The pageant will be held at the Gwinnett Center on February 24th, 2008.

Oracle belives that today's society is unaware of proper diet and nutrition - striving only to be thin. As Mrs. Georgia, she would work to inspire the public to look beyond the media's influence to be "skinny" and to encourage everyone to strive for the more positive goal of health. July 7th, 2007 is supposedly a lucky day. The amount of weddings taking place has tripled according to some statistics. Las Vegas is going nuts with wedding chappels being booked from 5 am to 11:59PM let alone their casinos according to an article in Time magazine. So my question for this group is: what are y'all doing for 777?

I will be dancing my butt off at Awalim's Tribal Carnivale event at Red Light Cafe...hopefully we'll have a palm reader and fortune tellers to tell us how lucky we'll be on the luckiest day of the century!

She's started this new thing where she'll sit and sway. at first I thought it was a game she was playing - but then I watched her as she'd push the button on one of her musical toys and then sway to the music. She'd stop when the music stopped - then would push the button again and start swaying again.

What?
General Skills for ATS is a 15 hour intensive course
Curriculum includes:
-Functional anatomy as it applies to dance
-Music theory
-Instruction of all FCBD steps and concepts
-One on one critique
-Drills
-Ample time for questions and answers

Who?
Dancers and teachers who:
-Want a complete knowledge of the FCBD vocabulary of steps, ATS theory, cues, formations and performance concepts
-Perform and teach Fusion (ATS blended with another style)
-Do not teach or perform fusion and are interested in continuing in the FCBD Teacher Training Program

Experience required?
Yes:
-Participants must have prior knowledge of ATS via class, workshop or instructional FCBD VHS/DVD

Follow up?
Yes:
-GS graduates will have access to Carolena for questions regarding the course information

Oracle raqs!...and so does Morocco

It was SO nice to have you up in Asheville for John Compton, even just for a weekend.
We will have to make more of it sometime soon since I am such a fan of the Oracle...
in fact, here is a little crosspost to suggest great times for another visit to the mountains.

Dance legend Morocco is coming to NC in June - please preregister NOW to ensure your spot in this event.
There are also a few performance spots left. This event will be held at the beautiful and welcoming JCC in Asheville - light, airy and convenient. It is the perfect venue to showcase this powerhouse of original information!
