It's been well over a month.
I've been trying to work with the new tribe, waiting to get over the loss of the old one and see if it isn't all the same in the end...
It ain't.
Tribe used to feel like a great outdoor market with lots of hustle and bustle and friendly faces....
Now I kinda feel like I'm a sheep being herded through Ikea.
It's a drag...
And I know folks are sick of the bitching (and trust me, this will be my last one)... This new tribe sucks and no amount of time passing or cheerleading for Tribe is going to change that.
Congratulations Tribe. You're about as warm and friendly now as fluorescent lighting. Well done.

Mon, March 6, 2006 - 4:52 PMspeaking of...
anyone else notice the rise in spam? spam in threads, spam in my inbox... i've seen more in the past three weeks than my entire tribe subscription (since 1-1-04).
i have a theory (such as it is)... since tribe decided to put ads in the middle of threads, now anyone thinks they can do it.
i have seen the death of tribe, and its not what we thought it was. the spammers shall inherit the earth (and all bbs or bbs-like systems).

On this particular issue, Rainey:
- we're bringing listings back to your homepage (coming up in a few weeks)
- we're going to give you more control on your homepage over what you see
as for warm and friendly, we're thinking about letting people set the main background colors on the site for themselves. Would that help? -

Tue, March 7, 2006 - 10:12 PM- we're bringing listings back to your homepage (coming up in a few weeks) ---> FABULOUS!
- we're going to give you more control on your homepage over what you see ----> TERRIFIC! Can I make it look like old tribe?
<< as for warm and friendly, we're thinking about letting people set the main background colors on the site for themselves. Would that help? >>
I don't mean to be an ass Wade, but are you being an ass? or are you being sincere? Because if you're just being facetious, then touche... if you're being sincere, then letting people set the background colors will solve the warm and friendly problem about as well as SpongeBob band-aids cure oh, say... leprosy. In other words, you're missing the point, and given everything that's gone on with Tribe in the past 6 months or so, I can't say I'm surprised. -

Re: Another bitch...
Wed, March 8, 2006 - 11:43 AMWade is sincere. The next iteration of UI changes should include customization which will allow you to set colors as he described.

Re: Another bitch...
Wed, March 8, 2006 - 11:59 AMThe customization for your homepage you should see coming out in a couple of weeks won't include the ability to customize colors. It is something we're looking into, but there are a few issues to be worked out such as what the configuration screens should look like and what changes we need to make to the database to track these properties.
What you should see is a greater degree of customization on your home page. You'll have more control over what tribes are displayed and how they're sorted. You'll be able to see listings beyond just your friends out into your social network or in a specified region. These properties will be configurable be you. You'll be able to select the type of post that show up, so if you don't want to see recommendation of request you'll be able to turn them off. There will be a new module displaying events coming up in the near future that you'll be able to customize from what's happening today out to what's happening for the next couple of weeks.
In the future we hope to give more control over how things are displayed, allowing you to add or take away modules and reposistion where they appear on the screen, and yes we'd like to give you more control over color but that's still at least one more release cycle away.
I hope that gives you a little insite into what's coming up.

Re: Another bitch...
Wed, March 8, 2006 - 12:07 PMSorry Wade -- just frustrated.... didn't mean to take it out on you personally...
The colors are great. But to answer your question, no. The "warm and friendly" vibe of the old Tribe was because of the community that was built here by its members -- and the old UI wonderfully supported that. Tribe has *imposed* the new UI (which supports Tribe's marketing aims, but has alienated the very community Tribe helped create) on that community. In other words, the community now has to work around the UI, instead of the UI being the tool that brings the community together.
I think it was you, Warren, who finally addressed the problem in a way that made sense, saying that the upset was coming in large part from the conflict of interests between Tribe's members, who felt a sense of ownership of the site, and Tribe's business plan. I thanked you then for at least being honest about it, and I still feel what you said holds true.
So that's what I'm talking about here, which is why the post is titled "Another Bitch".... To repeat. It's been over a month and the bad taste in my mouth has not gone away about this site. I still use it. I still use it regularly. And I don't expect anything to change that will reverse the damage done to the community that once lived here. And that's frustrating as hell. Most of the people may still be here, but the entity that was once the living Tribe has been killed.
And just to nip it in the bud, if you're tired of hearing people like me complain about the good ol' days, you may just have to get used to *that*. -

Re: Another bitch...
Wed, March 8, 2006 - 1:02 PMAmen, Rainey. One of the things I most miss about the old tribe is the feeling that it was warm, friendly, and nurturing. You felt you were tuned into a community, not a soulless corporate entity.
The listings were amusing. I looked at tons of things I would never otherwise have bothered with (since if I am specifically looking for something, I go to Craigslist). I loved the ever changing political messages, things for sale, listings of events I never heard of, etc. Now, unless you are looking for something specific, the listings are gone.
As for blogs, I have never cared to read blogs and probably never will. The threads were always what I tuned into.
Now, the headers look like highway signs (gas/food/lodging) designed by Mickey Mouse for the Mouseketeers.
And my eye doctor probably loves all the glaring white, but it gives me a headache.
I feel that it's set up to appeal to teens, especially after the censorship issues.
I just wish they weren't so arrogant about not caring what we have to say.

Re: Another bitch...
Fri, March 10, 2006 - 11:36 AMNo kidding,
What made the old Tribe so wonderful was the fact that I tripped over something I wouldnt even know to look for, and thereby learned something about the people living around me here in the Bay Area and the world at large, nearly every time I came in.
The mix of listings (not just from friends, but for the entire area) and posts and blog entries and ads and requests all moving by at sidewalk level, changing every time I updated... THAT was what made Tribe a community. And THAT is what Tribe gutted entirely out of the new interface. There is no more sidewalk traffic; Tribe is now an automobile community with everyone segregated into tidy little traffic lanes inside sterile little glass windows. -

Re: Another bitch...
Fri, March 10, 2006 - 11:50 AMWell, it's not just the new UI hindering this kind of discovery, but even more so the new TOU, if what you're looking for is something that would have previously been flagged "Mature." All that content is now provate or friends-only. Without already being a member, you can't see it, and "pointer tribes" just aren't a substitute.

Re: Another bitch...
Tue, March 14, 2006 - 1:17 AMI'm sad.
Here's my bitch of the moment:
I hate how people will be very personal with the staffers and say "look - we were hurt by this" - it's valid! - "we felt like we were part of a real community and you took that away - why won't you answer us about this?"
and they never, ever, ever do. Why?
Two children, grinning stupidly, staring away from one another; they adorn a row of hideously unattractive logos that are 100% useless to any registered user, dominating the real estate on my browser. Real estate spam dominating my once-beloved tribes that used to have a real-world function. Staff lies and dodges like republican press secretaries. Whole threads in which "unsubscribed" chats with "unsubscribed".
Wow! And I mean - wow. Disrespectful and evasive hypno-blather passes for "response"! It's insanity. I can't believe anyone thought it would be good. The aim *must* be to kill this site. There is no other explanation. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Another bitch...
Tue, March 14, 2006 - 4:00 AMI can't imagine what it would be like if I had a job where the overwhelming response is.. WTF??!!
That people still hang in here and attempt to make constructive observations is a remarkable phenomenon. That the deeper issues are so completely ignored is an even more remarkable one.
Kudos to whoever made that comparison to republican press secretaries. Tribe has become a true extension of that world. What a model to emulate. -

Re: Another bitch...
Tue, March 21, 2006 - 10:53 AMIt would be nice to have help from any party!! The perceived lack of response is simply the large number of visitors each day versus the small number of employees. This means we cannot repond to all of the posts not to mention product requests.
The reality is that community negativism drives away participants and visitors.

Fri, March 24, 2006 - 10:07 AM<<The reality is that community negativism drives away participants and visitors>>
Are you serious!!!
This is suppose to be a place where we can speak freely about how we feel....and this is your response!
<<The perceived lack of response is simply the large number of visitors each day versus the small number of employees>>
And as for you not having enough staff or time to respond.........
It is painfully obvious that 99% of tribers HATE the new site. So as a business I might have...directly after the OVERWHELMING negative response poured through....sent a message to all tribe members simply saying you are aware of the OVERWHELMING negative response to the new look (or completely new site) and are atleast taking it into consideration.
Instead! You let us boil and bubble an get increasingly frustrated without any response.
The fact is, most of us will continue to use it. Because it is still far better than MySpace (and not owned by a corporation looking to use it's members to supply them with loads of free data) but the fact that you don't "seem" to care how us tribers feel about it scares me to think that someday soon Tribe will be bought out by ABC or CBS!!

It's clear from this post and from your post in the other thread about people who are "promoting other communities" that you've decided to blame your users for your mistakes. Great. The fact is that this is a fiasco and you and Wade and Elliot and Warren, etc., are still clinging to your faulty belief system as though it were your life raft. Whoever compared you to the Republicans was a little harsh but on target.
