Subject Exciting Changes on Tribe

Message

We want to take this opportunity to tell you about some exciting changes that you'll see and experience on Tribe in the coming weeks. As always we want and need your feedback, suggestions, and ideas. Feel free to mail me directly or send an email to feedback@tribe.net.

----- Keep in mind that anything you suggest will be ignored!

These changes are scheduled to go into affect the week of April 11th but we wanted to give you a "head's up".

----- We're hoping that you can see things from our viewpoint, namely, where our head is up at.

The New Tribe Homepage
You've sent us a lot of valuable feedback on the member homepage, and we want even more! When you login to Tribe, you'll see a link at the top of the page that will allow you to test drive a few of our new designs for the member homepage.

----- We've now lost so many users to MySpace and Free-Ass that we're now in panic mode trying to pander up to you to show what good friends we are. We've even fired the two messengers we hire dto give the bad news, and now, I'm the next one on the chopping block. PLEASE LOVE THESE CHANGES, otherwis eit's my ass. They killed Wade, They axed Warren, now I'm next in line. Love the changes, and save my job.

The new designs will allow you to:
- view all of your tribes at once

----- Something most users already figure dout how to do, we'll make it easier for the stupid people out there

- see more "sidewalk" content (view listings, events, and reviews posted by your friends, or others in your network

----- Make it more like the old tribe everyone actually LIKED

- customize what kind of content you see on your homepage

----- We've only been dangleing this carrot for over a year, so we figure we better put out or shut up.

Add Video to your Profile
You'll be able to display video on your profile. Upload your video to Revver.com (a video content site), and then add a "My Revver Video Module" to your profile.

----- We're just not enough like MySpace. This should help us be more acceptabel to video spammers. Nobody wante dthis featire, and all teh users complained about video on profiles, so we'r ehoping this drives that last of you away. Maybe this will get us the VC that Jan is desperate for, but somehow I doubt it. 14yo's don't have VC.

Site-wide Search
We've had many requests in the past to be able to search the entire site (all of our different areas—people, tribes, jobs, reviews, events and more) at the same time.

----- Tribe is difficult for Stalkers and Date-Rapists to use. This should change that making it more friendly to them.

With site-wide search, located in the upper right-hand corner of the masthead, you'll be able to type in a term and get search results that cover the entire site all viewable by category so you can get to the right content lickety-split.

----- We don't want stalkers to have to look for the search, so we'll spam it on every page. We're pretty sure you can make this go away with RIP for firefox.

Bug fixes
Yes, were always out to find a bugs and squash them.

----- What you call a working feature, we call a bug.

As always, you're our best exterminators.

----- We're cheap fuckers blowing the VC on stupid interface changes. We prefer that you work for free and give us lot of ad clicks and do the work for us.

If you run into a bug don't hesitate to post it in the Tribe.net Bugs tribe at tribebugs.tribe.net.

----- So that we can promptly ignore it.

To see what we're fixing in detail go to the Release Notes tribe at releasenotes.tribe.net.

----- Please post things that are working perfectly so we can "Fix" those as well.

Best wishes to Wade!

----- They'll never find his body. NEVER! We buried it real good.

We want to wish Wade a fond farewell and a deeply felt thank you for his efforts over the last two years. He graciously took on some difficult tasks and handled them with aplomb. Good luck in your next venture!

----- Tribe 25, Outrageous Jobs, Image flagging, 2257 panic, Tribe Sanitation for the peopel of Godwin Texas, and let's not forget, a big proponet of this asstastic interface monstrosity that is giving everyone migraines and Grand Mal Seizures.

Member Icon Contest – Bragging Rights and $100!

----- Because at the rate we pay our designers, they can afford to spring $100 cash on you to do their job for them.

Please don't forget that we need your help with our redesign of the member icon in the masthead. To participate check out the contest guidelines at tribes.tribe.net/membersicon and follow Elliot's instructions. The winner gets a $100 Amazon gift certificate and the bragging rights

----- The gift certificates we get for free from amazon, so it's not liek we're actually out anything at all.

Thanks again for your commitment to Tribe and the Tribe community. Our service is built on the foundation that you are the most important feature.

----- This is just lip service, our actions and practice have shown we don't give two shits about you or anyone else, and I'm nothing more than the new cheerleading mouthpiece of tribe. How do you know I'm spewing forth the party line bullshit? My lips are moving!

Please continue to actively participate in our community and let us know what we can do to make your experience better.

----- Let's try to get the traffic and postings on the tribes back to what they were pre-interface change. OUr hits are dropping faster than the user base. Between low posted, increased flagging of all content, we're losing ground fast. Start posting and putting some content here because we don't want to go look for jobs.

Cheers,

Darian Patchin
Darian@tribe.net

----- Next one in line to get fired if you peopel don't get happy!

      Darian-

I've been told many times that I say the things the staff are at times thinking.

Thus, I have no problems voicing it, and I do sympathize for what you are having to deal with. The first time your paycheck bounces it will indedd suck and me further proof that not only has the ship began sinking, but the rats have made a break for it. The captain will no doubt reap the most benefit, and walk away to do it all over again just like everyone where else they have gone.

Tribe had a nitch with the more intellectural people of the net, and were willing to support this site. They have since left and moved on. Now it's a ghost town of empty tribes filled with questionable profiles of lurking peopel that never log on or contribute. They used to come watch the entertainment, but now, very little of that entertainment has left.

I see nothing of interesting want ads, postings, or the like anymore. It's only taken HOW LONG to realize the you castrated the best parts off of tribe, crippled it into this horrid cataract inducing eye sore. Concentrating any possible content into lttle hidden away nitches you can't find. Now you're going to attempt to bring it back, however it's too little, too late.

A week after the interface change you guys SHOUDL have rolled it back, and admitted it wasn't ready, put everyone on a test server and let the beta group hammer at it. We would have LOVED to help, been 100% behind you guys, but nobody cared. You're marketing tests told you whatever you wanted to hear and you believed it. I mean, really, you guys actually think that tribes target audience is 'post college women between the ages of 25 & 29?

I mean... really. YOU BELIEVED THIS? You guys actually bought that.

You want to know what your target was... (now, who's to say)... all you had to do was run some metrics on this system. Run against all your active tribes, active posters, largest tribes, and see who's really using the system, and generate your own demograph and push forward with it.

No no no... thats' too easy. Much better to come up with some ficticious target of housewives in Kansas and how tribe can help them.

I always think you're insightful, Shatter. That being said, we'll continue to make additions, changes, edits, etc. to the site that helps content creators create and content consumers consume.

We're not always going to get it right--we've certainly messed up in the past and I suspect we'll do so again in the future (just hope we don't make the same mistakes). And, there will be times when we won't be able to simply role back for a variety or reasons. But, we'll continue to try and focus on the community. I hope we as a community (you, everyone else in this tribe and on the service) will continue to keep us honest and call us on things that don't work.

I'm serious about the next official communication. I think this is a new marketing program. We're going to have a "guest" tribe staffer send them out. Kind of like a guest bartender...

By the way, for anyone reading this in SF. Mighty is having a happy hour tomorrow at 6PM (they are located at 119 Utah Street in Potrero Hill). Come on over and join us. I'm gonna find a way to snag some drink tickets to hand out.

"That being said, we'll continue to make additions, changes, edits, etc. to the site that helps content creators create and content consumers consume. "

If you really want people to create content, change the TOU so you don't automatically own what we create. Everywhere else, that is called theft.

              Oh God. Video?! Huh.
Is it going to load up automatically if you click on a profile?

If you make it so people can put music on their profiles, I am outta here.

There are private tribes for that sort of stuff.

Seriously, if there is going to be video, dont let it load up automatically please. I just think that to be tacky and takes up time especially for those with the dial up ( I was recently one of those so I know what a pain it can be waiting for all that crap to load up.)

If you're going to have video, then you also need to give us an option to not play videos (or music). I don't want video. If I start clicking on profiles and a video loads automatically, I'll simply stop looking at peoples profiles to avoid it. That would kinda suck.

And please, no music or talk tracks. Whenever I'm on any site and I hit a page where someone starts talking to me, I can't hit the back button fast enough. I hate that.

Odd... in all the posts I've read and of all the things I've seen people ask for, video was never mentioned. Where are these throngs of users asking for video? I don't think they exist.

yay video! I am a videographer and editor and I am one of the throngs of users who has been asking for video capability... I was actually hoping it would be more like a video blog interface than a myspace-style video on the homepage module, but this will do for now. Thanks tribe! yay for video! Well, video that you have to hit 'play' to watch. ugh. I hate it when ANYTHING starts playing automatically...

                        Here's the thing with video...

                        Revver.com

That's who you have to use to host.

What's stopping anyone from using it now? Using it for the past 6 months? What about You Tube? Is it that important to be able to embed it into your profile? Do links not work just as well?

Imagine that you're a director or producer. You might want to put a trailer for your new film in your profile. If you're an actor, you might want a demo reel. Likewise, a band might want to put up a video. While it's not useful for me, I can imagine lots of people who might want to express themselves via video.

I agree with everybody else, though-- autoplay is evil.

Just to clarify: our philosophy (even if we havne't done this well all the time) is to give members control over what content they see and how they view it. So, the video player will work just as your television does. You'll need to turn it on/press play in order to watch.

This would have been a cool thing to implement instead of flagging -- letting each individual user's account track what it wants to see and doesn't want to see -- thus not affecting anywone else.

shatter, as usual you pretty much said what's been on my mind and was feeling too "polite" to say. (translation: too chickenshit to say because i didn't want to antagonize people that i think want to create a big fun popular site but have been painfully misdirected by the notion that we, the users, want the lame ass aesthetic that's been hoisted on us by 2257, the new TOU and the New Look)...

the return of sidewalk traffic and the removal of the members icon will address my two biggest gripes about the new look, but i have to wonder if tribe will ever gain back the cool community that made it so addictive in the first place. after all, i can always go trolling for fake friends on myspace, but what made tribe so uniquely wonderful was that it was populated by burners, freaks of every stripe, "edge thinkers", neophiles, etc... a "friend aggregator" of the people i know and the people i most want to meet and interact with.

for a guy like myself, someone who travels extensively and often has face to face interactions with people from san francisco (and burning man) to new york (where i reside) to new orleans (jazzfest, etc) to numerous post-jerry deadhead style music events (to vend and make rent and groceries), tribe was an ideal way to get to know a lot of interesting people and stay in touch and in touch with the intersts of those people. since 2257 and the new TOU i've invited almost no one to "join" tribe and have spent considerably less time here. why? because i don't want to tell someone to jump on a ship just as it's collided with an iceberg.
            • Re: Allow me to translate!

              Thu, April 6, 2006 - 11:39 AM
i picked up a recent issue of newsweek at a hotel where i was working a conference and saw the cover story as the new face of the web, this whole noise machine about Web 2.0... and, of course, it devoted a great deal of attention to MySpace, Flickr and YouTube, and how user generated content sites are sweeping the web.

it said MySpace is growing at a rate of as many as 270,000 users per day (according to the Newsweek article)... so the way i'm reading the tea leaves is that to add the bells and whistles that tribe wants to add to entice some of those potential MySpace homesteaders, it needs to streamline the site and make them feel like they won't be hit on by bondage freaks talking about labial piercings when they are really just interested in talking about the nuances of how Brad and Angelina are handling Brad's split with Jen... or whatever other inane gibber it is that the post-2257 tribe is trying to make the site safe to discuss.

the whole dynamic of tribe needing to grow at an exponentially greater rate in order to get the right number of page views to keep advertising revenue streaming to pay for the widgets is, to me, precisely the wrong direction the site should have taken. we didn't ask for certain bells and whistles. hell, we can't even use simple HTML tags in our posts but we can imbed video in our profiles? when tribe is predominantly a text-centric medium for interactivity, this seems like a perfectly inverted priority list.

blogs were a great addition. modifying "cells" on one's profile was a great addition. removing "view all tribes" to keep the new system flowing smoothly was an annoying but understandable compromise that needed to be made to rein in an increasingly unmanageable database. everything else related to the new look has been (in my eyes and clearly in the eyes of many others) a disaster of major proportions... a perfect bullseye shot to tribe's corporate foot.

good luck getting tribe to not suck. i'm still waiting to see if that's going to happen. but i'm definitely spending far less time here than ever before, not just because it's ugly and cheesy, but also because the "best minds of a generation" have pulled up its tent stakes and clearly gone elsewhere in search of greener pastures.

The problem with MySpace is it's got a LOT of fake profiles, fake celebs, historical figures (Nitzche is on my friend list, along with Stewie from Family guy) so those numbers are pretty much, bullshit.

If you want to track it though, bring up Toms profile. See how many new friends he get's per day, since he's automatically everyones friend unless they can figure out how to drop him. I highly suspect it's much less than 270k/day

shatter, even though i agree that the 270 K per day number is most likely inflated, the strategy still seems to be that tribe wants to get some of those same potential new viewers to go for this format instead of that one and that's why we've seen all these ludicrous changes that don't reflect the aesthetic or other priorities of most users on this site.

some of the changes have needed to happen for the infrastructure, some have been things that most users have enjoyed (blogs) and yet, so many of them have just been these absurd overhauls that were not asked for, not wanted and created an uglier less functional (and less exciting) site than we had prior to 2257 and the new TOU and new look. on the whole, i'm unconvinced that tribe will ever regain its former status as the most intelligent and interesting of the myriad of social networking sites. by opting for quantity of users over quality of them, i feel like tribe ultimately cost itself both.

i hope i'm wrong, but judging from the way things have all but died in most of the exciting corners of my tribes, i tend to doubt i am.

Ah, yes, but I suspect you can't sell "quality" to either advertisers or potential funders (VC) the way you can the numbers.

And can't you argue that most of what you'd call "Quality Tribe members" are people who'd never click on an ad in the first place, either out of principle or spite?

                      Warren,

I gratefully click on ads that are relevant. When Tribe first introduced ads, a vast majority of them were semi-relavant. Bellydance DVDs, music festivals, Tribe T-shirts, DJs trying to promote themself.

Now we get ads for "www.sex-offender-list.com", mortgages, allergy medications - and something about the header "My Tribes" seems to trigger AdSense to bring up Native American dating sites, and Cherokee DNA Testing banners.

I understand that Tribe needs ads in order to survive. I agree it's really stupid and spiteful when people try and boycott them, rather than support you guys. But when you combine poorly-targeted mainstream ads and AdSense picks, with a hideous interface that no one needed or wanted - people who are conscious of where you guys are going gonna get grumpy.

Yes, dumb people are much less aware of what they are viewing on the internet. In many cases, they don't know that the are clicking on an ad, or filling out a lead generation form. They just see the big-busted sleazy model on the True.com ad, get lured in by the fake winks, and fork over their credit card without realizing it is impossible to cancel. And they never consider that all brainless, cookie-cutter women they could ever want are right there on MySpace - writing blogs entitled "i'm SOO bored", and posting pictures of their friend throwing up at the prom party.

Tribe was different. And in time, people would have come here to find quality, inspired use- generated content rather than crap. Content is king.

I think if they continue to listen to the ideas people have mentioned, and implement them soon enough they can recover, but I think some interest has certainly been burned with folks. Every day the boring look/ineffective interface remain unaltered is another day thing smolder more. There's only so fast they can code, design, program and have meetings, etc. I'm sure, but to recover whatever may have been lost it will take successful implementation of satisfactory product, and time for word of those changes to filter back out to the net. Once users who stayed get the word to users that left "hey tribe fixed xy & z and it's back to workable (or awesome, or better than ever)", they could recover, and even excel. But it's a slow haul if the recent progress shows anything. They have a start on it, and it took awhile, but they seem to have gotten at least part of the message that users have been saying (and demonstrating through silence and departures). I just hope the next 'upgrade' goes better.

So far I've seen: a genuine attempt to notify users on the next change *and* lip service to the idea of letting us test it properly first. These were two issues for me last time, so I feel that those concerns may well have been heard. I look forward to next week. We will see how much has sunk in by what gets implemented. I'm hopeful, but still harbor some cynicism from the change to the current buzzkill interface.

BrettFromTibet and TheArchFiend, you've both articulated much of what i've been feeling. I, too, "still harbor some cynicism from the change to the current buzzkill interface," but have not given up on tribe completely for the simple reason that it is still vastly more appealing to me than MySpace and any of the other social networking sites. but the main reason tribe has so much of a warmer place in my heart is because it embraced the freaks and burners and edge thinkers. if it doesn't seem to do that any more, i could easily move on and get comfortable on any other social networking platform. (the exception for me is MySpace, which is owned by Fox News. i have an aversion to doing anything that lines the pockets of Rupert Murdoch and his cronies,. even though at one point i cr
