Hey folks,
This is one of my ultimate comfort foods. I love making Japanese curry, but I haven't been able to find any brands (Golden Curry, S & B, Vermont) without MSG. Any brands out there folks can recommend. I live in the Bay Area, so if I can't find it here, I won't find it anywhere.
Thanks!!!

Re: Japanese Curry w/o MSG, Does it Exist?
Thu, February 16, 2006 - 10:30 AMI've recently been wondering the same thing myself. I am pretty sure non-MSG versions don't exist. Personally, I am going to experiment with making my own curry. Unlike Indian curry, these Japanese curry cubes tend to use beef tallow as the thickening agent. Good luck in your search. -

I dug this up from an old post of mine. It took me a few weeks to figure out, but I finally came up with a homemade golden curry recipe, though I was making it for 50 so you'll have to adjust the amounts.

Re: Japanese Curry w/o MSG, Does it Exist?
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 4:07 PMI know for a fact that a cube version without msg exists, and I was able to buy it in a Tochigi-ken health food store when living there. but sorry I dont know the brand anymore...
but kryssa's recipe sounds like it does hit the spot, if you can muster the effort :-) -

Re: Japanese Curry w/o MSG, Does it Exist?
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 7:29 PMyes, the health food stores have more varieties but good stuff is even sold in the supermarket now in my small city, w/o msg.
The brand sold in the supermarket here is called 'kosmo'(コスモ).They have 3 scales of spice sold as a bag of powder.
I don't know if that info will help you. In a month, or so, when I have more time, I will try to get the other names and some addresses.
I always make my curry from scratch, but to be honest, most often the curry I make is more Indian or Thai. I end up getting the Japanese curry eating out on rare occasions like last weekend, curry udon(noodles), no doubt with msg. -

Re: Japanese Curry w/o MSG, Does it Exist?
Thu, January 24, 2008 - 12:21 PMThe 'key' was the apple juice! I tried varying the quantity several times, tried concentrated organic as well as homemade...but in the end the one I posted worked out perfectly!
Japanese Curry is so unlike any other curry and I had to call upon my knowledge of simple family style Japanese cooking in order to figure it out, as it has little in common with Indian, Thai or British influenced curries. Anyway, I had a blast deciphering it and even the one's that didn't work out perfectly were delicious.
I've recently been doing a similar test kitchen type endeavor with Okonomiyaki sauce as the case I'd ordered from Japan was seized by customs due to having chicken in the ingredients list. *sigh* I haven't quite perfected it, but I'm very close! As soon as I figure it out I'll post it.
