"The group behind Tsunami and Café Abir, the Dajani Group, opened its latest venture, Nihon Whisky Lounge on September 26 in the Mission. It’s right next-door to Chez Spencer, and is located on the former site of a leather factory that was then converted into a dot-com loft, and includes a lounge, a mezzanine level and a private dining room. This sleek lounge is one of the few destinations in the city that offers a contemporary version of Japanese izakaya cuisine, an informal type of pub food that is meant to be enjoyed over drinks with friends. Chef Adachi Hiroyuki is the executive chef, known for his creative and artistic approach to Japanese cuisine while at Tsunami. The menu includes both traditional and contemporary offerings of sashimi, dishes from the robata grill and an array of small dishes. The selection of single-malt scotches (there are 90) is one of the largest in the city, with many that are exclusive to the restaurant. Nihon, 1779 Folsom St. at 14th Street, San Francisco, 415-552-4400."

I found Adachi's (he's like 25 y/o) culinary skills to be lacking at Tsunami and stopped eating there (although the sake selection is fantastic, supposedly the best in the US: 50+ different types)... BUT: I only go into Tsunami for drinks either after or before I've eaten.

Adachi's friend/bandmate Taka is much better (@ Tokyo GoGo) if you're interested in that style of "Hey I'm Japanese so why don't I learn to become a sushi-chef after I've moved to the US" sushi.

The service here is terrible. If you plan on going there for a party, do not book the room. Not realizing that this place is half empty on a Sat. night, I booked a room for my birthday party which was completely un-necessary and overpriced. The manager was not upfront about bottle pricing (certain bottles count towards the minimum, whle others do not) and the waitress was terrible. I had people waiting over 30 minutes for her to bring in the initial drinks. She was so slow, they started going downstairs to the bar to buy their own drinks. Not to mention, the bar forced me to buy an extra bottle due to the shady pricing.

    all in all, stay away.
