topic posted Mon, May 5, 2008 - 2:05 PM by  Hoops

what Im wondering is why Roger Waters has any say so in it when hes not even eligible to vote in the US elections cause hes not even a citizen of the USA

He wouldn't be Roger Waters if he didn't wear his politics and his ego on his sleeve. Not to mention his nostalgia for England when men were men and Americans were junior partners in running the world:

"But now an Englishman abroad is just a US stooge
The bulldog is a poodle snapping round the scoundrel's last refuge"

How can England be great if it takes its marching orders from GWB:

    "Oh George! Oh George!
That Texas education must have fucked you up when you were very small"

And, like David says, American leadership ain't too popular in the court of world opinion:

"America, America, please hear us when we call
You got hip-hop, be-bop, hustle and bustle
    You got Atticus Finch
    You got Jane Russell
    You got freedom of speech
You got great beaches, wildernesses and malls
Don't let the might, the Christian right, fuck it all up
For you and the rest of the world"

The quotes are from the only song performed last night (or on this 3-year tour) written by Roger in this millennium, "Leaving Beirut." In a way, I found it the most involving song of the night, if only because I haven't heard it 420 million times. There are some versions on YouTube; this one is pretty good quality: www.youtube.com/watch

Notwithstanding the political posturing, I had a real good time at the show. You wouldn't really expect Roger to keep his opinions to himself, would you Steve?

      >>You wouldn't really expect Roger to keep his opinions to himself, would you Steve? <<

I guess you are right! LOL

I just find it highly amusing that his beef is our Govt...not his. And he doesn't even live here! I don't mind John Mellencamp wearing his heart on his sleeve...at least he's doing it here...and not in Europe.

      >>>"Oh George! Oh George!
That Texas education must have fucked you up when you were very small" <<<

another funny thing.....GWB didnt go to school here for long....he was not let into St Johns on numerous occasions...and went to Kinkaid for 2-4 years before going to boarding school up North.(I believe the same school his dad went to)

I applaud Roger Waters for using a forum to reach thousands of people to try and help change the world for the better. I wish more entertainers would use their ability to reach large audiences to tell the people what our own news organizations will not.
True, Roger Waters is not a US citizen, but he is a citizen of the world and if you think that G W Bush's fuck-ups have only affected Americans, you are sadly mistaken. Our (excuse me while vomit) pResident has created death and destruction on a worlwide scale. Every person on this planet has the right to speak out against our great country because of what our (excuse me again) leaders, unfortunately, have done to devestate this planet.
I say ROCK ON Roger Waters and anyone else brave enough to speak out against tyranny and injustice. ...yeah, I said it!
The pig did have Obama's name on his belly with a little box with a check mark in it signifying a vote for Obama.
Pink Floyd's music and specifically Roger Waters' songs have always been very political in nature.
"We don't need no thought control!"

which brings me to another point. Waters got sick of Pink Floyd and left and yet cashes in on its library...even performing songs from Animals, and album about capitalism. So his capitalistic urges led him onto the road to "cash in" because we live in a capitalistic society. sell out?????

I love the guy...its just I find a little bit of hipocracy in the things he does....and I think I said this in the original thread announcing his tour.

Im glad you guys had a great time...I know it was an excellent show...its just silly to me the things he stands for or stood for years ago and a complete contradiction to his stance today

            >its just silly to me the things he stands for or stood for years ago and a complete contradiction to his stance today

But when did it become silly? When he cashed in by touring w/o the other 3/4 of Pink Floyd? When he wrote an album (Animals) largely about the greed of record companies after he had become a gazillionaire by selling a bazillion records? When he turned an "underground" band into a hit making machine with Dark Side? When, socialist that he is, he didn't share his Dark Side profits with the downtrodden of the world?

I guess my point is that you're not naive enough to be shocked at this late date, Steve. Roger didn't invent the hypocrite rock star but he was self-aware enough to appreciate the irony and incorporate it into his art. There's just no irony or subtlety in the slogans on the pig or in the lyrics to "Leaving Beirut." You might think that reflects artistic decline; someone else might argue that it's a more straightforward reaction to intolerable world conditions. I might say it's only rock & roll...

Does being a citizen of another country negate any opinions of this one? We certainly offer our opinions of the other counties freely enough. Not to mention sending in our young people to die fighting for our right to tell them how we want to run their country...especially when we want their oil...or other resources.

not really...but I thought it was amusing that he was offering his opinion on our presidential election. Its not like our American musicians are out lobbying for their Prime Minister... I can understand not liking Bush. But the whole Obama vote was kinda odd to me, thats all

      >>We certainly offer our opinions of the other counties freely enough.<<

"WE" do?? You may...I certainly dont freely talk about the election of other countries leaders. In fact its VERY RARE to ever hear me talk politics with anyone...Same with Religion
