Re: day camping/hiking around Houston
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 6:15 AMDitto re Brazos Bend - travel less than an hour from downtown Houston and see this land pretty much as it was before 4 million people settled in. However, the place is literally crawling with alligators (big sign at entrance: "Caution Alligators"; I felt like I was in a '69 GD setlist), so keep a tight grip on the kiddo. -

Mon, May 5, 2008 - 7:15 AMAlso you can head North to Huntsville, it's pretty nice up there, and only about an hour drive.

I know there are some hiking trails and camping out there.

We went there on Saturday. I thought it was really nice, and couldn't believe how many turtles were in that pond. -

Re: day camping/hiking around Houston
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 12:41 PMWe love the arboretum. If you hang around the pond long enough, you might even see "Monstro" (named by Z), the resident ginormous Snapping Turtle. -

Re: day camping/hiking around Houston
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 2:18 PMWe saw a giant turtle. He hung out at the bottom, didn't come to the top, but was 4 times the size of all the other turtles, and a different species based upon his markings. -

Re: day camping/hiking around Houston
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 4:25 PMThat was him, Ol' Moss-back. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comm...ing_Turtle
They are so prehistoric looking and awesome! I love turtles. There is a ginormous alligator snapping turtle at the Aquarium.
The other kinds in the Arboretum pond are Red-eared Sliders and "Cooters" (seriously) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooter_Turtles. The Cooters look just like the sliders except they don't have the bright colors. They are plainer looking. -

Re: day camping/hiking around Houston
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 3:42 PMI know of really sweet spot that is a fifteen minute hike, on a lake, in pine trees, and is almost totally empty at all times. My secret spot in on Lake Conroe, and takes 1:15 from my door to my primitive camping spot. Let me know if you want more details.
