SEE-I featuring members of Thievery Corp.

Just in case some of you that might not be going to New Monsoon...

SEE-I will be performing at the House of Blues on Saturday, May 16.

SEE-I is an 9-piece funk 'n' soul reggae band from Washington, DC. SEE-I comes from a 1970's roots angle and there are many other influences that can be heard in the music ranging from blues to rock, latin, soul, funk and brazilian beats. This makes sense because of the variety of bands that the SEE-I band members hail from. 4 of the 8 members are part of Thievery Corporation and other bands represented include All Mighty Senators, Fort Knox Five, Sin Miedo, Thunderball, Wailin' Love, Nayas, International Velvet, Soul Brazil and others. All of these experiences and influences combine on stage to create a unique sound that can best be described as a reggae jam band. SEE-I delivers a positive vibe that keeps the dancefloor packed and grooving all night with smiles on everyone's faces.

DESERT ROCKS!!!

Hey out there!

Just wanted to see who is going to Desert Rocks Music Festival in May?? I heard from friends who went last year that it was AMAZING--I am lucky enough to have visited Moab, UT before, and I can't even imagine the beauty of having a music festival there... The landscape itself is breathtaking (check out some of the pics and footage), and then to think of all the FUN (aka PARTY!) of having people throw down in the desert with friends and great music, yeah!

Tickets are really reasonable (they're only $95 for the whole weekend), they have a Web site with all the info: www.desertrocks.org

And the line-up is sick too, with ALO, The Mother Hips, Hot Buttered Rum, The Motet (and the return of magicgravy, my favorite!), Billy Nershi from SCI is going to be there, and my friends from SF, Big Light...and a bunch more, you can see the full line-up on the Web.

Anyway, just thought I would throw it out there--the festival is May 22-24, in Moab, UT, over Memorial Day Weekend--what a ROCKIN way to spend a 3-day weekend!!!

Here's a cool video I found about last year's fest: http://www.desertrocks.org/desert-rocks-2009-teaser.html

And here's a fun pic from someone who went last year, I can't wait to cheers to it too!

See ya there!!!!!!

Les Claypool, Matisyahu, and Dub Trio Will Mess With Texas

This is taken from Jambands.com....Heaven forbid anyone should get bent out of shape for sharing information from the internets.

Up until now Les Claypool has only confirmed summer festival dates. However, in addition to appearances at Summer Camp, Hookahville, Wakarusa, Rothbury and All Good, Claypool and his current band has added a club date to the tour itinerary. On June 8, Claypool will perform at Houston's House of Blues on a bill that also will feature Matisyahu, and Dub Trio. The show likely will offer some cross-pollination as Matisyahu keyboard player Rob Marscher has performed with the members of Dub Trio since they were in Actual Proof and he gigged steadily with Addison Groove Project.

Whoo hoo!!!! I'm totally going....If anyone wants to share a rental car/ride & camping from Chicago to Rothbury, hit me up in a private message...I'm flying in July 1st on a non-stop Continental Flight leaving IAH at 3:45 pm & arriving in Chi-Town at approx. 6:30 pm. I will be picking up the rental car & heading out that night, stopping for food & supplies. I want to be there early to get a good position in line for camping & such. I will be returning on Monday July 6th & turning my rental car in & getting on the plane flying back to Houston at 5:24 pm. Plenty of time to get there, plenty of time to get back, and possibly seeing some Chicago sights if possible.
This is my last big hoo-rah for a while since I will be tied up in clinicals non-stop from Fall '09 through all of '010. I'm so excited! The only way this could possibly get better is if they added New Monsoon, Michael Franti, and/or Carolyn Wonderland.

an open letter to Phish Tickets

I recently participated in the online lottery to obtain tickets to see Phish at Red Rocks. To the best of my knowledge the online lottery was the ONLY way to obtain tickets in advance of their sale through Ticketmaster. In the process of signing up for the lottery, I read the following statement from the vendor, Phish Tickets.

A FEW CHOICE WORDS ON SCALPING

Phish Tickets has a zero tolerance for scalping and insists that all patrons of our service abide by our policy stated herein. Tickets made available through this site are intended only for fans who are actually planning on attending the shows requested. It is strictly prohibited to resell any tickets obtained through Phish Tickets for more than the purchase price. If you are found to be reselling, trading or brokering tickets that you purchased through our site for profit, Phish Tickets may at its discretion cancel your ticket order and all other pending orders in your name. This cancellation will result in a refund of the total price for the tickets minus a $7.00 per ticket processing fee and any shipping fees that have been incurred with respect to the order. We reserve the right to investigate all orders suspected to be in violation of this policy.

We urge you not to purchase tickets through brokers or "scalpers." These tickets may be counterfeit in which case you will not only be overcharged but will also likely be denied entry into the show.

I put in a total of 6 requests for 16 tickets, but my ticket request was UNSUCCESSFUL. Most of the other fans I know had similar luck. Online of late I have seen quite a bit of frustrated chatter to that effect.

On behalf of Phish phans, I will say it does not escape our attention that www.ticketsnow.com is currently offering tickets to Red Rocks for $255 a piece, plus $38 service charge. That makes the cost of getting a ticket through TicketsNow.com more than 5 times the $49 face value of tickets. Red Rocks tickets went on sale at 12:00. One friend reported that they sold out by 12:01, but TicketsNow.com had them for sale at that time for $500.

In light of the aforementioned zero tolerance policy on SCALPING by Phish Tickets, I have a few important questions:

How did TicketsNow.com obtained their tickets?

What arrangement exists that allows “TicketsNow, A Ticketmaster company“ to sell tickets for five and ten times the original price?

How does the scalping policy apply to TicketsNow?

How is Phish Tickets is affiliated with the band? Is Phish Tickets an individual entity or are they one in the same?

It’s great that Phish Tickets has a strict policy in place with regard to scalping, however unless and until the policy is enforced, it is just a bunch of TALK. Clearly TicketsNow.com is offering tickets for a grossly inflated price which would seem to fly in the face of the stated scalping policy. I charge Phish Tickets to either go after TicketsNow for scalping tickets or offer the phans justification for their current position as a second hand vendor.

Regards,

Steven Klaus

Beck to re-release One Foot in the Grave

http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/04/01/beck-reissuing-1994s-one-foot-in-the-grave-on-april-14th/

Beck will reissue his 1994 slacker folk album One Foot in the Grave on April 14th, with reportedly 16 additional songs tacked onto the original track list. The rocker’s publicists confirmed the release date, which Rock Daily noted on Amazon.com’s preorder page, which also indicates Interscope Records will handle the reissue. The LP was originally distributed by K Records and recorded before — but released after — Beck’s breakthrough major label debut Mellow Gold.

The news of the reissue first appeared in Japanese paper Daily Yomiuri, which interviewed Beck before his tour of Japan this month. “Well, it’s been out of print for a few years, so it’s something we’ve been planning, but I knew that we had these extra tracks. I’ve actually been working on this for the past two or three years,” Beck told the newspaper. “[On] the original tapes there were an extra maybe 30 songs that weren’t on the record and I picked the best… and added them on there, so it’s got about a little over a dozen extra tracks that no one’s heard before.”

Exclaim.ca adds more potential details to the 15th anniversary reissue, including its potential track list. In addition to the original One Foot, the three-song It’s All In Your Mind EP — the original version, not the Sea Change version — is reportedly included. There’s also evidently a batch of unreleased songs that have appeared only on bootlegs and been part of Beck lore but never heard (”Teenage Wastebucket,” “Piss On the Door”) and even some songs that the fine folks at Beck site Whiskeyclone haven’t heard of. We hate to get ahead of ourselves, but since we’re celebrating 15th birthdays, shouldn’t Mellow Gold get one too?

um....nope....ain't gonna happen......

well i tried, and I googled it, and can't find it, Maybe go to the Northwest Cjhamber of Commerce site????

Since a number of y'all have been inquiring, I just got word that New Monsoon is confirmed for Old Settler's 2009. They will be closing the Bluebonnet stage on Saturday night, April 18. Current ticket info for Old Settler's is at: http://www.oldsettlersmusicfest.org/tickets

To anticipate another question, no, NM will not be playing Houston that same weekend as Old Settler's. However, stay tuned to this site for an announcement pretty soon about an old school Monsoon weekend in Houston in... May!

This 'within the scenes' context is what sets the show apart from other shows that have originated from recording studios. Our special guest and audience of one is Lou Congelio from Only in Houston and STANANDLOU.

Live from SugarHill, Episode III airs on March 5, 2009 at 7p.m. CST. This month's show features performances by Jennifer Grassman and MacAdams.
About SugarHill Recording Studios
The oldest continually operating recording studio in Texas is nestled in a southeast Houston neighborhood that over time has been home to legendary producers, record labels, and artists who've produced some of the most historically important and widely recognized musical recordings. Beginning the legacy in 1946, musician Harry Choates, with producer Bill Quinn, laid tracks for the Cajun classic "Jole Blon" for Gold Star Records. Blues icon Lightnin' Hopkins recorded soon thereafter. In the 1950's the studio hosted Pappy Dailey's D label, George Jones cut "Why Baby Why?" and the Big Bopper recorded "Chantilly Lace." Willie Nelson, Bobby Bland and Arnett Cobb recorded sessions. In 1960s, the Sir Douglas Quintet tracked "She's About a Mover." The mid-1970s introduced Crazy Cajun producer Huey P. Meaux and his work with Freddy Fender and Clifton Chenier. Since the 1980s, SugarHill has hosted Tejano artist Little Joe, country great Johnny Bush, and urban powerhouse Beyoncé.

while some people like to complain about Phish not caring for its fans....I beg to differ.

http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/phish-to-release-free-mp3s-of-hampton/

As we’ve mentioned a number of times over the past few weeks, it was quite curious that Phish didn’t release any details about the continuation of their Live Phish program for the upcoming shows in Hampton. We felt they had a trick up their sleeves and we finally got our answer - free MP3s!
In a likely nod to those who were unable to score tickets to this weekend’s shows, the band has decided to make official downloads of all three shows available free of charge via LivePhish.com. While the MP3s will be free, CDs and FLACs will also be available for a charge. I love this band.

Livenation/TM Merge?

Looks like this one's going to the SEC:

http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/2009-02-10-live-nation-merge-ticketmaster_N.htm

Live Nation, Ticketmaster agree to merge
By David Lieberman, USA TODAY

The boards of Live Nation (LYV) and Ticketmaster Entertainment (TKTM) unanimously agreed on Monday to merge their companies — potentially creating a concert and live entertainment behemoth — according to an executive who was briefed on the matter but declined to be identified pending a formal announcement.

The deal would create a combined enterprise, called Live Nation Entertainment, valued at $2.5 billion. It would put under one roof some of the USA's biggest concert venues, its dominant ticket sales company, and wide-ranging management and promotion deals with hitmakers including the Eagles, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and Jay-Z.

The companies are poised to say that consumers will benefit. For example, it might be easier for ticket buyers to pick the seats that they want, and avoid the confusion and sticker shock that sometimes comes when people see ticket handling fees tacked on to the admission price.

By eliminating duplication, the companies expect to see $40 million in cost savings a year.

Antitrust officials, though, likely will closely scrutinize a deal that turns two bitter competitors into partners.

Live Nation, which sells more than 45 million concert tickets a year, launched its own ticket sales service in January after its deal with Ticketmaster expired. Ticketmaster, which handled more than 141 million tickets in 2007, countered by acquiring a controlling interest in Front Line Management — a firm run by long-time music executive Irving Azoff.

But the war between Live Nation and Ticketmaster contributed to a steep drop in both companies' stock prices.

The deal calls for Live Nation to offer 1.384 shares of its stock for each Ticketmaster share in what will be billed as a tax-free merger of equals. Shareholders in each company will own half of the equity in Live Nation Entertainment. Live Nation and Ticketmaster also would each have seven representatives on the 14-person board.

NIN and Janes Addiction to tour???

Holy shit.....never thought Id see this happen!!!

from the Nine Inch Nails message board....and Trent Reznor(and sadly the end of NIN???)

http://forum.nin.com/bb/read.php?9,484360

Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Is there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.Trent

If you haven't heard yet, Leesa Harrington lost her husband Alex (Eyes of The World) this past Saturday and has flown back from the East coast from her new gig as drummer of Lez Zeppelin to bury her husband.
As if burying your husband is not bad enough, she was surely still grieving from the loss of her mother in November and could most likely use all the support and love that our Phamily can give her at this most trying time. I know I could not have made it through the losses I endured the past year without all of you guys giving me the love I needed soooo badly.

I got this post earlier today and wanted to pass it on....

Leesa asked me to pass along her address and phone number so that people can visit (if you already have the info, my apologies). She'll be back and forth to the funeral home, so please call before you drop in.

New Book: Growing up Dead

Growing Up Dead: The Hallucinated Confessions of a Teenage Deadhead

"The hardest part of being the Grateful Dead's publicist was convincing the media that Dead Heads were diverse, thoughtful, and not infrequently accomplished. If I'd just had a copy of Peter Conners' Growing Up Dead, I could have simply handed it out. The Dead Head subculture was rich and fascinating, and this book is a terrific documentation of it."

Dennis McNally,
Grateful Dead publicist and historian
author of A Long Strange Trip

Told against the backdrop of the American landscape of the late '80s to the mid-'90s, Growing Up Dead is the story of Peter Conners's journey from straight-laced suburban kid to touring Deadhead. Peter discovered the Grateful Dead in 1985, at the age of 15, through friends who exchanged bootleg tapes of live Grateful Dead concerts. A teenager living in the suburbs of Rochester, New York, he became exposed to an entirely new way of life, and friends who were enjoying more freedom and less parental guidance. At the age of 16, he attended his first Grateful Dead concert on June 30, 1987 - he was hooked. Between 1987 and 1995, Conners would attend Dead 'shows' all over the United States. He traveled with a makeshift 'family' of other Deadheads in a Volkswagen camper, selling drugs and whatever else would provide gas money to the next concert. His hair was a wild, unkempt bush and baths were infrequent. In short, he had progressed from suburban kid, to Grateful Dead fan, to full-blown Deadhead. Chronicling this progression, which culminates with the 1995 death of Jerry Garcia, Conners reveals the truth behind Deadhead culture and history. The result is a riveting insight into the obsessive fandom that made The Grateful Dead the most successful touring band of all time, as well as a cultural phenomenon.

"Poet and editor Conners (Emily Ate the Wind) offers a perspective often missing from other Dead chronicles: that of one of the suburban teens in the late 1980s and early 1990s who dropped out of high school and/or college to follow a band whose members were 30 years their senior. Unlike most Dead fans (and rock critics) from the 1960s and 1970s, the band’s music wasn’t the most important thing to Conners and his Gen-X companions—the focus was on “becoming and living as a Deadhead outside the Grateful Dead concert.” So while Conners offers some earnest and often hilarious chapters about his teenage stoner life (“One of the problems with teenage drug abuse is that you never get to know what your adult brain would be like without it”), his most inventive chapters offer second-person accounts of what really went on at a typical Dead show in the 1980s. “You are thrilled. You score acid. You smoke the Indica. You eat some mushrooms.... The situation is post-verbal.”"

--Publishers Weekly, January 2009

Growing Up Dead will be published by Da Capo Press on April 15, 2009. The book is currently available for pre-order through all bookstores and online vendors. Publicity requests for Growing Up Dead can be sent to Lindsey Lochner at lindsey.lochner@perseusbooks.com

field "trips" can be fun?

http://www.metrosantacruz.com/metro-santa-cruz/01.28.09/features-0904.html#

We were barely past MacArthur when I felt it beginning to take hold. It was a big Friday for me, taking 40 students on a walking field trip to our local bookstore, then a tour of the Community Center and, if there was enough time, a little sit-under-a-tree-and-read time for the students in the Plaza.

I was in my 10th year of teaching in the only alternative high school in the town of Sonoma. Fall semester I was teaching English, algebra, science and art to students who usually hate each of those subjects. My primary task was engagement: get the kids understanding why knowledge is power and why they should give a shit, and then fill in the blanks as they appear.

It was the beginning of the year, and my office manager had informed the staff two weeks ago that we suddenly had $4,000 to spend. "But spend it fast," she warned, "because you never know." Budget distribution in the district frequently means no money for long periods of time, then a big wad to be spent within two weeks before it disappears into another pot. I quickly scheduled a Friday walking field trip to Readers' Books, telling each student they had $15 to spend on a book of their choice. The only catch was that they would have to complete a book report. It's an excellent way to spend $600, as most of my students have never been in a bookstore, much less bought or read a book of their own.

At first I felt lightheaded, like I hadn't eaten anything or was out in the sun too long. Then I started noticing my legs. It felt like each step I took was propelling me up into the next. It was like I was walking on a brand-new track, only five times as springy. I noticed my whole body bouncing up and down. Something was amiss.

Drugs are a common topic in my classroom. The students have questions and I have answers, and if I can prevent one less overdose or drunken driving death, it's worth it. My students get fucked up. We live in the wine country, and whenever you live in a booze-based economy, kids are going to grow up with issues. Acid, mushrooms, meth, coke, prescription drugs and a whole lot of weed are what the students are into. You would think it would change after 25 years, but it's just the same as when I was in high school.

Max had left a screensaver depicting 12 tabs of Scooby-Doo windowpane acid on one of my classroom computers. I told him to do a research paper on Timothy Leary and quit being such an asshole. I think that's why he dosed me.

By the time I reached Chase Street, I had a pretty good awareness of what was happening. Some of the treetops were dancing in the heat and wind, and my mouth was extremely dry. I went straight to Max, who was walking about 20 feet behind me.

"How you feeling, Mr. Moss?" he said with a smirk.

"Max, this is by far the dumbest thing you've ever done. How'd you do it?" I asked.

"Coffee" he admitted.

"How much?" I inquired.

"Small drop, one to two doses, should keep you going for a while."

I ran through my options as best I could in my altered state, settling for what I thought was the most rational.

"Look, this is how it's going to go. I'm going to ride this out, and you're not going to tell anyone about it. Then you're going to be expelled and brought up on criminal charges for dosing your teacher. Finally, you are not going to tell anyone what you did as it will seriously jeopardize your outcome. Clear?" I was getting lightheaded again, but I could tell that the point was made.

"Yes, Mr. Moss" he responded.

I had a big day that I didn't want ruined by an LSD trip. Two years ago, a student had brought cookies made with marijuana butter to a teacher in the local middle school. After eating two, the student admitted to the prank. The student was expelled, and the teacher went to the hospital for tests and then home.

I had no time for that scenario; 10 years of following the Grateful Dead had trained me to control my experience. I used to volunteer with the Haight-Ashbury Rock-Med program, where I'd watch a guy named Doc Rock do drug talk-downs to people who were out of their minds. Besides, we were only going to the local bookstore, the community center and a park. How tough could it be? I was a professional; I could get through it.
Second Street East is one of those Sonoma streets that make tourists want to move here. Lovely restored cottages, perfect landscaping, large porches, shade trees--the American dream. I stopped at a white craftsman, similar to the home I grew up in. I was thinking how my dad, a newspaper writer, was able to pay for this house and our not-so-extravagant middle-class life (two kids, two cars, dog, tennis club membership, a cabin in the mountains) while I struggle like crazy working two jobs, hardly able to afford my mortgage in a little house on the other side of town, with no tennis club and certainly no cabin.

"Mr. Moss, are you OK?" It was Brenda, suddenly pulling me out of my thoughts. "The rest of the class is blocks ahead; you've been staring at this house forever."

"Uh, fine, let's catch up," I answered.

We walked on at a brisk pace. My lightheadedness prevented running, but I started smiling as I was still feeling the bounce in each step.

Roll with it, John, control the craziness, but let yourself feel the drug was my internal mantra as we caught up to the other students.

At the corner of East Napa and Second Street East, we met up with the rest of the group. My teaching assistant and I had made a plan to split up the students and take 20 to the bookstore and 20 to the community center then switch so as to not overwhelm either venue. I contemplated telling the TA what was up but then thought better of it.

"All right, seniors with me to the community center, everyone else with Mr. H, switch in half an hour. Any shenanigans and we cancel the next trip." Max was a junior, which was one of the reasons I wanted the seniors with me. The only thing worse than trying to hold it together while on drugs is having someone with you who knows you are trying to hold it together while on drugs. Also, most of the seniors had been with me for at least a year, and I knew they would be easier to control.

On the way to the community center, there's a bed and breakfast with the most beautiful dahlias growing in the front yard.

"What kind of flowers are these?" I asked when their heads suddenly began to explode like little fireworks. I watched for a minute then turned and kept walking. Hallucinations were rare in my previous LSD experience, but I already had dancing trees, bouncy sidewalks and exploding flowers. Dangerous signs this early in the trip.

Alex was waiting in front of the community center. Blond and cute, she is the executive director and a longtime professional friend of mine. I had a huge crush on her when I first moved to Sonoma, but we were both happily married, so the flirting never went anywhere dangerous.

"Welcome, Mr. Moss. Welcome students." She had a smile that made me turn away, as I didn't want to seem too happy to see her and I was worried about blowing it. I fixed my eyes on a statue of a giant metal salmon some 10 feet away on the front lawn. It is a huge statue I had admired before, created by my friend Martin who had attached a bicycle gear to the bottom so that it moved in the wind. It was spinning very slowly, and the vision centered me.

"John, are you coming?" Alex walked over to me; the students were already inside. I had heard nothing of Alex's introduction or history of the community center; I was just connecting with the salmon. "You feel all right? You look pale."

"Sure, fine, I just really like Martin's sculpture," I replied, taking way too long to pronounce "really." We walked inside where the students were looking at the artwork on the walls. I took my sunglasses off before realizing that they were acting as a shield between my drug-addled mind and the real world. I quickly put them back on.

Alex walked us around the community center, poking into classrooms and art rooms, saying little to me and focusing on the students. I told the students I had a new prescription so I needed to keep my sunglasses on. I had never worn glasses in the classroom, but nobody brought that up.

We left the community center after what seemed like hours but was probably only 20 minutes. Alex gave me a sideways glance. I thanked her for the tour and I realized that I needed to hold it together a little better. I knew I was in trouble as I bounced past the dahlias again and they were still exploding. I thought about sending the students into the bookstore alone and going to sit under my favorite tree in the Plaza, but realized that was the drug talking.

The bookstore was packed. It's a very small place, and seeing it filled with 30 students would normally be a wonderful scene, but today brought fear. I greeted the owner at the door, then beelined it for the children's section in the back of the store. I spent the next half-hour completely ignoring the students and reading The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.

The walls of the bookstore were slowly closing in on me. I still had my glasses on, but they were no longer keeping me safe. I was having trouble processing the words in The Lorax, but I knew the story so well that I was able to live in the pictures in the book. I stopped on the page where the last Truffula Tree is whacked, staring at the vast ugliness of the barren landscape. My thoughts turned to clearcutting, global warming and environmental degradation, and when I looked up, the walls of the bookstore were moving in closer like the garbage-crusher scene in Star Wars.

I headed for the door. I asked Marsha the bookstore owner to tell the students to meet in the park after they finished. She flashed me a curious look, as what I really said was "Mettledeparkwhenrstudentsrdungeddin books." Somehow she understood "park," "done" and "books," which were the key words.

As I passed the register, Marsha asked me a question. I could not answer, as it sounded like she asked it in a foreign language. Keep going, don't hit anyone, and don't knock over anything, just focus and keep going. I had once tripped over a dead seal on the beach in Santa Barbara during a college acid experience; it had put me in such a bad mood that I'd spent the next two hours curled in a ball, rocking back and forth crying.

Outside was good. I could breathe easier, there were no students and I was no longer going to be killed by a wall of books. I still had The Lorax in my hand, which was not a bad thing--I assumed Marsha would just ring it up with the other books. I knew I had to get to the Plaza to sit under a giant eucalyptus tree, watch the ducks and wait out the acid.

It's only about 500 feet to the tree, but I knew it would be tough as my bouncy-squishy walking style was now a more falling-swerving walking style. I walked along trying desperately to remain upright, one hand holding The Lorax and the other palm down, fully anticipating the concrete pushing up from the sidewalk and throwing me off balance as I walked.

The Laughing Queen, a novelty and costume shop, had a display of glasses in the window. The faces holding the glasses began to swirl and move as I reached out for them and touched the glass. I hadn't realized it was there. I turned just as a voice said, "Hey, John."

It was my friend Jim, a Sonoma city councilman and ex-mayor. "Whoa, you OK?" he asked. "Can I help you get somewhere?"

I had to make a snap decision to tell him the truth or try to lie and get away before he found out the truth. I was in no shape to do either.

"Uh, fine. Fine." Not my best comeback. "Park." I had been reduced to single syllable words, like a dog barking.

"Well, all right. You take it easy," he replied with a curious look. I shuffled past him, restarting my falling-swerving style. Jim and I had been at a few wine-soaked fundraisers together, and I knew he had some bacchanalian tendencies. An occasional swerve in our town often goes unnoticed.

At the corner of First Street and East Napa, I had trouble crossing. I had been staring down to make sure I didn't step on anything (the seal incident), but now I had to look up and I couldn't gauge when it was my turn to cross. Cars were coming from every direction at a very rapid pace, and I knew crossing at the wrong time would mean instant death. Finally, an old man started across in front of me and I followed, able to reach the other side. I wanted to hug him and thank him and tell him what a savior he was, but luckily I didn't.

I finally reached the tree and lay down with my head at the base. I closed my eyes for a few seconds, then opened them to see Jim and two police officers walking toward me.

"Not good," I thought to myself. I propped myself up against the tree. My back immediately molded itself into the shape of the trunk.

"Mr. Moss, can you stand up, please." One of the officers stood over me, looking about 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide.

"Well, Mr. Moss, your friend here told us that you are under the influence of LSD, and we also understand that you are leading a school field trip and are responsible for 40 students, who don't seem to be around. Now, please stand up so that we can arrest you, put you in jail, take away your credential, make you lose your job and completely ruin your reputation in this small town." I looked over to see all of my students lined up clapping as he put the cuffs on me.

I woke up sweating. I was still alone, my head against the tree, The Lorax at my side. "Get a hold of yourself, man," I thought, breathing in and out, feeling the sweat cool on my body. After 20 minutes, I carefully crossed the street to Plaza Liquors for a giant bottle of water and returned to the tree to ride out the rest of the trip. I knew the arrest dream was the peak and now sanity would slowly return. A couple of students came by and asked me how long they had to stay. I told them they could leave whenever they wanted. I was happy not to be barking anymore. I watched the trees dance and read The Lorax about a hundred times.

I never did suspend Max. He became one of my best students, and is now studying to be a pharmacist at UC-Davis. Soon, he'll be dosing people for a living. Funny how life turns out that way.

This years 2009 Super Bowl Party has change of venue!

For those interested in attending the Schultzs' family Super Bowl blowout, the party has been moved to a different location this year and as always should be a hoot for all who attend!

The new location is as follows:

Chris & Amanda Snyders Home
1319 W. Vistawood Dr.
Houston, TX 77077
(This is near Briarforest between Wilcrest & S. Kirkwood, just south of Lakeside Country Club)

Starts: 4pm till ??
What to bring: Anything special you want to eat or drink and a voracious appetite for some kick-ass BBQ!

The new digs will be very accomodating for our crew and will give us a chance to mingle with other people outside our group and build even more friendships for all. Chris has had a very succesful party in years past and is looking forward to the merger of these two ecletic groups of friends.
As usual there will be more dead BBQ'd animals than you can shake a stick at and his house is very beautiful and set up nicely for entertaining.
Inflateables will be set-up for the kiddos so don't worry about finding a sitter if this applies to you. Hot dogs & burgers for the kids will also be provided.

For more info, call Kurt @ 832-607-5878
Hope to see you there!!

Anyone? We're just curious who we shall keep our eyes open for next May in Denver at the Dead? We'd love to see some old pals from the Cafe and Dan's in Houston as well as all you freaks who now live in CO.

Anyway, here's hoping our paths will cross again sometime somewhere soon.

Phish too, if they make it out West that is.

We'll see.

Cheers and Good Will to All.

Bright Blessings * Happy Hugs,
> re: blowjob. sandwich. silence.
>
> this morning, on the way to work, one of the many insane women in my
> life spent 30 minutes bending my ear on the phone re: her ongoing
> problems with the male of the species. i'd heard this rap from her
> dozens of times (as well as from MOST of my female acquaintances at
> some point), whether in the dating phase or the ongoing-relationship
> phase.
>
> some women understand what i'm about to lay on you instinctively.
> others figure it out after years of painful experience with men. and
> now i'm gonna share it with the rest of you broads, for free, to save
> you some time. you don't need couples therapy, you don't need a shrink,
> you don't need dr. phil. all you need is da rev's all-purpose axiom for
> handling men:
>
> blowjob. sandwich. silence.
>
> women love discussing the vicissitudes of men ad nauseum, but here's
> the reality. men HAVE no vicissitudes. men are simple creatures, as
> predictable as the flow of the nile, and about as complex in their
> desires as salmon swimming upstream to spawn.
>
> blowjob. sandwich. silence.
>
> repeat it to yourself, make it your mantra, and find life with your
> husband/boyfriend/fuck buddy change OVERNIGHT. it can be used singly,
> in combinations, or as a three-pronged assault.
>
> he gets home from work tired, worn out, cranky? BLOWJOB. you used to
> like it -- now use it like penecillin. follow with SANDWICH and find
> that anything you ask for is not a problem. employ SILENCE next; you
> have a LIFETIME to bend his ear about that annoying bitch in your
> office who dresses like a whore and is undermining your authority. this
> is not the time.
>
> blowjob. sandwich. silence.
>
> he likes having his idiot, neanderthal pals over to drink beer and
> watch football every sunday, yelling "woot-woot" and scratching the
> coffee tables -- while you're forced to entertain their idiot,
> clothing-obsessed bimbettes/wives? he likes playing xbox too much? he
> refuses to give up his one night a week to rehearse with his shitty
> band that plays nirvana covers? SANDWICH & SILENCE. you love the big
> dummy, right? or at the very least, like to bang him? LET HIM HAVE HIS
> FUN.
>
> blowjob. sandwich. silence.
>
> your boyfriend likes jerking off to porn? "what, i'm not ENOUGH for
> you?" no, you're NOT. and that's okay. men need to cum. a LOT. it's a
> dopey, biologically-driven bit of monkey behavior that has NOTHING
> EMOTIONAL tied to it. besides, you think your claude akins-lookin'
> boyfriend/husband would stand a chance in hell with the playboy-fembot?
> guess again. and if he did, and YOU were the stripper-bunny fantasy,
> you'd still be having these same issues. let him have his fantasy. be a
> good sport about it. encourage it, even. it's better than having him
> running around porking REAL broads. SILENCE.
>
> blowjob. sandwich. silence.
>
> less evolved females see this advice as regressive, "submissive"
> behavior. nigga please. smart, empowered chicks with game already
> understand that pussy has ALL the power in the world. women are
> complex, strong, and FREAKY. you can afford to bend a little. give the
> big dummy some leeway. let him THINK he's in charge.
>
> blowjob. sandwich. silence.
>
> repeat it. run your hands over it. accept its simple, spot-on, wisdom
> and be happy.
>
> rev
>
> ps: if, like me, you're fortunate enough to be gay, the formula changes
> to: blowjob. blowjob. blowjob.

Ron Wood Says Faces Reunion Tour Is “Ready to Go”

its a shame Ronnie Lane wont be a part of this...as this is probably one of the coolest things Ive read in a loooooooooooooooooooong time!

http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2008/12/01/ron-wood-says-faces-reunion-tour-is-ready-to-go/

Ron Wood has confirmed long-standing reports that the Faces are gearing up for a reunion tour next year. “We had a few fantastic rehearsals last week and we’re ready to go,” Wood tells Rolling Stone. “It’s like no time has passed by.” Rod Stewart’s touring bassist Conrad Korsch sat in on bass, replacing original Faces bassist Ronnie Lane who died in 1997. “There’s a lot of guest bass players that want to do it — including Flea,” says Wood. They plan on hitting the road sometime in 2009, though no dates have been set. “We just have to sort out when and where and drop all of the management egos and just do what we can. We know we can do it. It’s just a matter of getting everyone’s availability sometime next year.” New studio work might also be in their future. “Rod wants me to write a load of new stuff for him, so I can do that,” says Wood. As far as Wood’s other band goes, he says he’s “always itching to do more work with [The Rolling Stones]. We just haven’t decided when and where, yet, but I know we will.”

If you aren't familiar with the Dap Kings...maybe you have heard of Amy Winehouse....the Dap Kings were her backup band on her albums.

this funky lil number has not come out of the player since I got it. and for $8 for an MP3 download....how can you not at least give it a listen??? Some serious groovin on here....think Herbie Hancock meets Deodato(if you dont know who Deodato is...wake up!!!!) by way of Billy Preston's "Outtaspace"

you can listen to each track if you like...but trust me its worth all the eight buck to buy it

Project Logic Live- a seriously fun cd from a great band...including Scotty Palmer from John Browns Body, Steve Bernstein from Sex Mob and Vernon Reid from Living Colour, with some choice covers like Bubblehouse from MMW

Come in Red Dog, This is Tango Leader-Charlie Hunter/Bobby Previte

what else needs to be said about Charlie Hunter...hes arguably one of the best musicians MY ears have heard and his 8 string guitar makes sweet melodies! Bobby Previte is one of my favorite drummers and its hard sometime to even think that this cd is two guys theres so much goin on...well sometimes its a trio...but its mostly just the two of them.

http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/phish-clifford-ball-dvd-details-revealed/

As Phish prepares for the next stage of their career they aren’t afraid to look back at the glory days. As we told you about last year, Phish plans to release a seven-DVD box set documenting every note from The Clifford Ball. The Clifford Ball kick started the festival scene as we know it back in August of 1996 at a decommissioned air force base in Plattsburgh, New York. This long-awaited package hits stores and online retailers on March 3 with preorders scheduled to ship from Dry Goods on February 27.

To make things interesting, everyone who preorders the Clifford Ball DVD box set will be entered to win a pair of tickets to Phish’s upcoming reunion shows at the Hampton Coliseum on March 6-8. The band is offering a veritable cornucopia of Clifford Ball packages with t-shirts, ticket stub magnets and a limited edition poster among the merch up for sale.

Besides the concert themselves, The Clifford Ball box set includes a bonus disc chock full of never-before-heard goodies including the band’s recording of the infamous flatbed truck jam, a 30-minute featurette with band member interviews and more. As always, Keep your eyes on Hidden Track for audio and video samples from The Clifford Ball over the next few months.
