Okay - I'll admit it - I can't STAND Stay Check. It's a real hate/hate relationship - so take this for what it's worth. ;-P Now that that's out in the open, here is what I used and how I used it to seal my fan edges, and I'm really pleased with the results.
All of the methods mentioned were done as experiments with my silk scraps before I did the final on the fans BTW...
I ended up using Fray Block by putting the silk over my non-pourous work/matting board with paper towels over that, and then applied it very carefully to the edges (tiny, tiny amount on edges) using a small, flat edged fabric paint brush applicator. I brushed it from inside to the edge, only 1/16th of an inch in, and NOT by dragging the brush along the edge, so it didn't pull at the fabric.
The other ways were too messy (soap) and pulled at the fabric too much, or too heavy/crunchy (Stay check). Tried the incence burn thing, but I didn't have enough control on my scraps - and decided that it would be better not to go that route. Hope this helps. It took a little while, but I really like the results. ;-P Happy fans!

Tue, July 10, 2007 - 7:01 AMare the edges of the silk not rolled and hemmed? that is interesting to know if they are just not finished at all...... -

Re: Alternate method of sealing the edges of silk (just a suggestion. ;-P)
Tue, July 10, 2007 - 9:14 AMThe length sides are the bound selvage, so really don't need sealing. It is a very nice end, though - and flows right into the veil - very high-quality silk) If you tried to surge or do a rolled hem, it would totally mess up the flow. I can't explain unless you saw it in person. where it comes off of the fan, it has a curve that gracefully goes into the "tail" of the fan. it "needs" to be sealed there. It also "needs" to be sealed just at the very end. I know the majority of dancers are used to rolled and surged ends usually - but it just doesn't work with these like that. So far, though, it actually hasn't been a big deal at ALL (I started dancing with them before sealing them, and frankly, nothing happened at all. (shrugs) But - since I wanted them to last for many many years - I wanted to seal them "just in case". If you look at some of the very top silk custom-dyed veils, though, for dancers who take care of their stuff and don't want to mess with the beauty of the silk veil (how it flows) - they never seal their ends - so go figure....
I hope this explained a lot and cleared up any assumptions about silk and how to treat edges. I work a lot! with silk of all sorts, so get to experiment a little. ;-P

Re: Alternate method of sealing the edges of silk (just a suggestion. ;-P)
Tue, July 10, 2007 - 12:51 PMAfter bumping into your other thread, would you mind posting a link to it here?? It contains much interesting info...
OK, Fraycheck is what I use. Yes, the very end of the fan is unhemmed, as is the curve of the silk right along the tines. There is no way to roll/hem these without disatrously affecting flow of the silk. I have never been able to find them hemmed, and my maker will NOT do it (I asked).
I don't hem any of my silk, period. Not my veils, not my fans, nothing.
I don't understand the notes about Fraycheck being crunchy or thick--I have never had a problem with it! The secret is to put down paper towels under the silk, then dab a SMALL THIN line along the silk in short spurts. Then, use another towel to blot out all excess. I leave so little on the silk that you can't tell it's there, visually or otherwise.
The curves are more important to treat than the straight edges--they fray more. This means TREAT YOUR DEMILUNES and MULANS!!! Just sayin'...
However, there are some more suggestions on the other thread. Now, if Velvet Fifi would do us the honor of posting that info... :D -

Re: Alternate method of sealing the edges of silk (just a suggestion. ;-P)
Tue, July 10, 2007 - 5:14 PMThese are very helpful tips ladies - I haven't done anything to mine yet. They are still gorgeous, even after performing with my 3yd blues a few times. But I think I will take the time and seal them according to these instructions. Thanks!

Re: Alternate method of sealing the edges of silk (just a suggestion. ;-P)
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 9:50 AMI'll admit - It's a personal thing with Fray Check. (See earlier comments in original post) It's my own personal hangup and cross to bear, so to speak, so I just wanted to offer other alternatives if anyone wanted them. I'll see if I can put the link in if someone will tell me how - I'm over 40 and technology challenged - do they have a "Technology Challenged Anonymous" group anywhere? ;-P
I wouldn't have sealed these edges, either, if it weren't for the fact that I won't be the only one using them and caring for them. I am a co-director of a dance company, and I just KNOW that the fans are going to be a part of things - and with about 15 people running around like baby nutballs, it's just not me using them anymore, so they are going to have to stand up to a lot of abuse (which is actually one of the reasons I went with Jennas - quality, quality, quality).... With that said, I just want to reiterate that the quality of the fans is TOPS! and that there are just some things you shouldn't do to nice silk like this, and that's surge or hem the edges... -

Re: Alternate method of sealing the edges of silk (just a suggestion. ;-P)
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 4:58 AMWould anyone be willing to post pics of their finished results? I know mine look like crap, and as I have more coming, it would be nice to get it better this time.
