I wanted fans, but after reading about the problems I decided to hold off. The good news is that I was able to find the pair I wanted being sold on ebay , and received them in less then a week. Now I want more, but still can not bring myself to order due to all the dissent. But while searching through my tribes I found a thread that suggest "UNIVERSAL_CURIO" (an ebay seller) as an alternative. The fans in the pictures look identical to my JHips. The feedback says that orders can take up to three weeks, but were worth it. The prices are less then $10 for the 1.5 meters and this includes a custom dye job. I'll be ordering a set come payday, and let you all know if they really are as good as Jenna's.

Re: Alternatives
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 7:50 AMAlthough I plan to buy directly from Jenna if I ever see her vending at a dance festival, I bought some of Universal_Curio's fans to practice with in the meantime. The bamboo splines are a little bit rough and could probably use a little extra finish sanding with some very fine grit sandpaper then a coat of laquer to seal them. Also, they were scrunched up in their packaging and needed ironing to smooth out their deep wrinkles so they would flow well. I also need to seal the edges as I have danced with them about 3 times and they are starting to fray already - not just at the loose end where you might expect but also the edges attached to the fan.
Nonetheless, they are certainly better than nothing, and if I am going to beat the heck out of practice fans then I would rather it be cheapo fans from China than Jenna's high quality (and more costly) fans.

Re: Alternatives
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 10:44 AMyes, i agree on the wood part. I thought they were a little rough but I havent had any problems with them yet. I never ironed my fans, the wrinkles just worked out naturally and fast. what do you use to seal the ends with? -

Re: Alternatives
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 12:35 PMThere was a thread discussing this topic: tribes.tribe.net/jhip/thre...0236202287 which appears to provide many options. Also, I understand indirectly that Jenna provides instructions for sealing along with her fans; however I have never received a set of fans from her so I don't personally know this. -

Re: Alternatives
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 12:50 PMI did receive instructions with my fans and Jenna said that she just used a small amount of fray check.
I've not had to use any on mine.

Re: Alternatives
Sun, November 18, 2007 - 4:23 PMThanks again for the alternative recommendation...I ordered three pairs from Universal_Curio (China) and received them in TWO WEEKS. I'm not even going to say what I'm thinking right now. You all know.
The fans are great! I got to see one of Jenna's fans at a recent show (another dancer had one) and my China fans look and feel exactly the same. They did come bundled together and very wrinkled, but I expected that much. I think that would be a bit difficult to avoid...but the wrinkles have mostly fallen out on their own without any ironing. I may fray check both ends of the silk just to be safe. The screw joining the tines seems a bit loose, but I can fix that too. I'm very pleased with them!

Re: Alternatives
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 1:48 AMPersian Gypsy and Kittarina: I am thinking to purchase these fans, and I have a few questions. Are the fan staves made of bamboo? Is it lightweight or flimsy or not? Also, is there one left handed and one right handed fan? Can they be flicked open and do they close easily?
Thanks! -
-
Re: Alternatives
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 7:49 AMI just got mine from universal_curio. They are a SLIGHTLY heavier silk then the Jhip fans, but just slightly. The staves are pretty sturdy feeling to me, and do open and close with a good snap of the wrist, but are stiff enough that they won't FALL open. Closing them isn't as easy, but with fans like this, once they snap open and closed enough, they tend to loosen up. The tines are made from (what looks like) bamboo, and there are a few spots that I have to file them down just a touch (those thready kind of fibers). They are both "right handed". So far I am completely happy with mine, and I intend to purchase more from this guy (I even recommended him/her to members of my classes lol). I also got them pretty darn quickly.
So far, so good!

Re: Alternatives
Sat, January 5, 2008 - 12:22 PMHello AnJa...sorry for the delay, haven't been checking this thread since I got my fanveils. To answer your questions about the fanveils from Universal Curio (China), here's a review:
The staves are made of bamboo and they are lightweight. The staves feel a bit flimsy to me because the screw isn't very tight in the three pairs I got (but it's fixable, if you're crafty). However, this also makes them very easy to flick open. If you were dancing, you could close them again, but it's more just scrunching them up. To store them, I actually fold each tine over the one before it to line them up perfectly again. The individual tines are about a foot long, making the fan about two feet wide at the longest when it's open (the silk, of course, goes out about 7 inches beyond the bottom-most two tines, so tack another fourteen inches onto the two feet to get an idea of the total width of the fanveils). The staves aren't laquered, so the bamboo is a bit rough in places, but I haven't snagged the silk yet. They could be sealed, if one wished.
The silk itself is very lightweight, flutters nicely, and the colors are very vibrant! As mentioned previously, they arrived bundled together, so there were lots of creases in the silk, but just laying them out open on the bed has loosened most of the wrinkles.
I'm not sure what you mean, by right-handed or left-handed fans...they're double-sided, so you can use them in either hand. I bought two pairs of 1.5m and one pair of 3m. I'm only 5ft 3in, so the 3m is rather difficult for me to dance with. I wouldn't recommend the 3m if you're short like me. It's too hard to keep the silk from touching the ground, especially if you try to dance with two at the same time. I prefer the 1.5m pairs.
Considering the price, I think these fanveils are well worth the purchase, if you're interested in fanveils. As mentioned previously, even if they fall apart or unravel eventually, they still make great practice fanveils. I'm certainly not disappointed; I'm thrilled with mine!

Re: Alternatives
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 8:00 AMwww.faye4u.com was selling GORGEOUS fan veils at Rakkasah East. They aren't up on her website yet, but she said she'd be happy to take inquiries. They are not as low in price as universal_curio, but she has a lot more colors available. They were JUST gorgeous and I'm hoping to buy myself a set with my holiday gift money! -

Re: Alternatives
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 9:24 AMAs I recall, it was somewhere around$70-$80 a set for the full 1.5 yard ones. She has lots of tri-color options and said custom wasn't out of the realm of possibility. -

Re: Alternatives
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 12:52 PMI ordered a pair of black and white fans from the Ebay seller in China, and received them (in the UK) in 1.5 weeks! A pair cost me £16, really can't argue with that!!
Quick question for the rest of you - what's the best way to store them?? -
-
Re: Alternatives
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 1:02 PMI got a black and white fan, too, but I don't like how it is yellow where it fades from black to white. Are yours like that, Asha?
To store them, I usually just wrap the extra fabric around the fan itself.

Re: Alternatives
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 1:41 PMBelieve it or not ladies, the "yellowing" as it moves through the air is a nice saturated gradiation and looks really nice as they move. A bit dissapointing when you first pull them out I'm sure, but honestly look at yourself in a video and you won't notice it. -
-
Re: Alternatives
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 2:05 PMI agree, it didn't really bother me at all as I thought it looked more gold than yellow and my new costume is white and gold anyway.
-
-
Re: Alternatives
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 2:07 PMYep, exactly the same - a bit more gold than yellow I think though. I figured there'd be a slight colour change from the pictures but it is more yellow/gold than the impression the photograph gives (so something to be aware of for anyone else thinking of getting the black and white fans)
Cool, that's what I did to store them too - just wasn't sure if it would crease them up.
