Is it totally improv or is there a skeleton sketch of the dance before or it is totally choreo'd? I'm curious because I know some dancers who are really talented at making choreographies don't ever improvise or don't feel improvisation is appropriate. And she's always spot on.

So I thought I’d share my thoughts on Jillina’s latest series…They’re great – I have finally gotten through all of them and learned all the routines, and I have even had some chances to perform some of them at restaurants.

I’ll start with the first in the series, “Entrance Choreography.” When I bought the series and didn’t know what music was used for the choreographies, I was hoping for a traditional Raqs Sharqi entrance piece. I’ll be honest and say that I was a little disappointed when I heard the music (Wait! This turns out good!), although I liked it fine – I was hoping for something more traditional. Then I watched the performance of the dance and thought, “OK, liking it!” Then I learned it and now I’m totally in love with the music and the choreography! It’s a wonderful way to start a show at a restaurant, or to perform at a seminar gala show (Other belly dancers will recognize Jillina’s signature moves right off the bat! I think it’s in the BDSS’ repertoire? (I imagine I’m a BDSS when I perform it!!! LOL!)). And speaking of it being recognizable, Jillina does encourage viewers/students to “make it their own”, which is great advice because it pushes students to be creative and to use her dance as a framework to venture into their own style. After I learned it well, I added different arm positions, additional turns and generally my own style to it like she suggested – of course it’s great the way it is, too!

Now on to the “Lebanese Pop Choreography” DVD. I’m not sure if she intended the series to be in order of skill levels (maybe it’s supposed to be in the order you’d perform them in a set instead – then what you’re about to read doesn’t matter!), but if so, I thought the entrance choreography was a bit advanced for less experienced dancers, whereas the Lebanese Pop Choreography seemed to be quicker and easier (but still a beautiful dance and visually exciting) to learn, perhaps because it was so short and repetitive. I thought the fact that it was short and repetitive was good, though, because keeping dances short keeps the audience wanting more! And adding repetition to choreographies lets the audience have a chance to actually see what the dancer is doing, so they can appreciate it more, especially since phrases in music often repeat, which I’m sure is exactly what Jillina was going for! Jillina instructed viewers to add different arm positions when the sections of choreography repeated so they would look similar but not exactly the same. The music for this dance is so beautiful! The choreography is completely lovely, too. The steps go so perfectly with the music! I have to say that this one is probably my favorite to perform. The added mood and feeling of the music makes it that much more special – it’s a love song about missing someone you love. I liked that Jillina addressed the element of emotion – you don’t see that much on instructional DVDs, so she brought a new dimension out for viewers to think about.

The “Drum Solo Choreography” kicked my behind! I really liked this too. It’s very challenging and exciting. It seems that most DVDs out there are geared towards beginners. There needs to be more advanced level DVDs for professionals! When dancers hit a certain skill level, it’s easy to become stagnant without insanely good will power, regular classes or ADVANCED LEVEL DVDS!!! (So this is a request for more challenging stuff like the drum solo DVD!!!) I loved learning a drum solo choreography that’s so completely different from how I dance to/choreograph to drum solos – it’s very refreshing. Jillina’s drum solos are always very original and mirror the music so well! If you are working on a drum solo and need some cool ideas, I really recommend this dvd. Not only that, but it’s a wonderful workout!

And speaking of working out…Jillina’s “Shape Up n’ Hip Out!” DVD! This DVD is divided into 3 different 18 minute workouts, progressively getting more difficult and sweaty. They are really good for beginners to get better at belly dance movements or for advanced students to drill technique. Even though the movements are presented in a workout, repetitive format, there are some pretty cute combinations in there! All of the workouts go over a variety of belly dance movements from head to toe. There is a warm up and cool down, too. Actually, there are warm ups and cool downs on all the DVDs. I like how each warm up is different from DVD to DVD. There are some useful warm up ideas for instructors, as well.

All the DVDs are chock full of PERFORMANCES!!! Especially the workout DVD that even features different dancers in addition to Jillina. All of the choreography DVDs show 2 performances of Jillina – the one featured on the DVD and something different! BONUS! And of course the performances are masterful and stellar!

The quality of the video footage couldn’t be better! The camera work and editing is extremely professional AND dancer-friendly. These kind of professional presentations of Belly Dance help raise the bar for our art form and help to enforce that it’s a legitimate cultural, artistic dance form and a great way to get in shape! There are many “home-made” DVDs out there, and even though content is the most important feature, it was really nice to learn from a DVD that was so well organized in it’s format and very clear to learn from because the viewer can see Jilllina clearly from multiple angles. Very well done!

I don’t own Jillina’s first series of DVDs that came out several years ago, but I’m going to go buy it now! Jillina is a one-of-a-kind instructor. She has figured out unique and clear ways of teaching even the most difficult movements. These DVDs are really great tools for dancers of all skill/performance levels! I bought mine at www.jillinshop.com – Oh and I got the package with the bonus CDs! Very helpful when practicing! I recommend it!

(I have to preface this "review" by admitting that I'm a HUGE Jillina fan, so I'm prejudiced. )

First brief impression of Jillina's newest dvds = thumbs up!

There are 4 dvds: A fitness/workout dvd and 3 choreography and technique dvds. Let's start with the 3 volumes of choreography, and then discuss each one individually.

STRUCTURE:
These are organized much like the first 3 dvds were -- introduction, warmup, technique, combinations, choreography, cool down, performance -- and a bonus "behind the scenes" clip of Jillina being Jillina :)

with one KEY exception:

EVERYTHING IS CHAPTERED !!!!!!!!! YAYYY !!!!!!

No more rewinding through the entire list of combinations to find the one you need to work on :) In the technique and combo and choreography sections, not only is each part chaptered, but you have a chapter for the instruction, and a separate chapter for the practice of the instruction -- the drills. You ALSO have the ability to "play all" of either the instructional chapters or the practice/drill chapters together in one session.

THANK YOU!

She teaches the technique sections filmed from in front (with cuts to focus on various body parts), and the combos and choreography filmed in front of a mirror.

The filming is good. For the most part it stays in one place, and only really cuts away to show the movement from a different angle. Lighting is good. Sound is good. The stage is littered with the usual stuff -- but that doesn't bother me, and it doesn't get in the way of the instruction. She teaches in basic practice clothes.

As before, she modifies each of the combos to create a choreography out of them, but the combos can stand alone. And they're cute :)

CONTENT:

I did not watch the warmup and cooldowns on any of the dvds. Sorry! It was my turn to cook last night, and I didn't have time.

The instructional content on these dvds is a bit of the same and a bit of different stuff from her previous dvds, but there's a different approach. Each step that is taught is practiced in the "drill" section in several different ways, at different speeds and with different orientations, AND with different footwork patterns -- to show you variations on how that step can be accomplished. I like that idea.

I didn't list each move taught on each dvd -- sorry! But some things you'll recognize from previous dvds (like the umi) and some things I don't remember seeing.

One curious addition is the first step taught -- a hip drop. I was puzzled as to why she would have such a simple and primary step as the first thing taught -- but now I have a theory. We'll come back to that.

MARKETED TOWARDS DANCERS WHO ARE...

I think, for the most part, these are more advanced dvds than the previous trilogy. NONE of the choreographies are as basic as the Alf Leyla Wa Leyla choreo from her first dvd, and I'll go out on a limb and say the choreographies are pretty complicated.

I do not think a first month beginner would like these dvds. I hate to resort to labels, but I think maybe these are more intermediate level? Some may say even advanced level!

The combinations are a bit longer than the ones in her previous dvds. I watched all the combinations for DVD 1 and thought a few were pretty easy, and others pretty darn complex! So don't assume volume 1 is the "Beginner" level.

Back to teaching of the hip drop -- Why teach such a basic step on a dvd that features a really complex choreography? I think what she might have been trying to do here is create a dvd that new dancers can "work up through."

If you've had a few months of classes, you can start with volume 1, and if you take it step by step SLOWLY, you can work your way up to a very nice and complicated choreography. But it is going to take PATIENCE. There is a LOT of stuff on these dvds. You have a LOT of material to work with.

Intermediate level dancers can MAYBE skip the instruction section and just work with the practice/drill section to get new ideas for old steps. Advanced dancers might jump right to the combinations section, although the steps taught on volume 2 are different - a couple of them I hadn't seen broken down before. I really like some of the variations she does with them. So advanced dancers -- give that technique section a look-see before moving on.

THE CHOREOS:

All the choreos are original, and the music for each one is on the CD "Bellydance with Jillina."

VOLUME 1
Volume one is an Entrance Choreography -- done to "Ancient Ruins," a song that sounds very similar in style to the "Entrance of the Stars" of the BDSS show. (Same composer).

This isn't your grandmother's entrance music.

This is HIGH POWER and BIG entrance music. This is BDSS style entrance. "Wham Bam Here I Am" kind of music. That's not a criticism because I like the piece. But it is high power and fast and has that underlying western sort of beat going on. If you can't stand that kind of music, or Paul Dinletir's music in general, then you probably won't like this piece.

The choreography is fast at times, and dramatic throughout. I like it, but it's VERY Jillina-style. That's not a bad thing, but if you're looking for laid-back and relaxed Egyptian styling, you won't find it here.

Personally I think Jillina leaves enough room in her choreographies for personalization -- and of course she tells you in the intro to make the dance your own. If you perform it exactly as she teaches it, it might look a bit flat. But there are MANY MANY places where a more advanced dancer could add some personal upper body expression. Jillina gives you a skeleton, and you add the flesh to it.

VOLUME 2
This one is advertised as a Lebanese pop choreography, done to Shady Sayegh's "Ya Hawa."

Disclaimer: I am NOT an expert on Lebanese STYLE belly dance. And I may be wrong in my assessment here.

I do not think this is a Lebanese STYLE choreography. (Correct me if I'm wrong, oh wise ones out there.) I think it is simply a regular choreography done to a Lebanese song.

In the intro, Jillina explains what the song is about, and asks you think about the emotional response to the song. She does not mention anything about Lebanese "STYLE" dancing, and how it differs from Modern Egyptian or Classical Egyptian, so that's why I'm assuming she didn't create this dvd as a crash course in Lebanese STYLE dancing.

If you're looking for an introduction to Lebanese STYLE dancing, you may want to look elsewhere.

This song is soulful and more relaxed than the entrance choreography. It's very easy to get into the feel of the music, and while I think the combinations and choreography would be difficult to execute properly in performance, they're not terribly difficult to learn. Less advanced dancers MIGHT want to start with this one, since the music is a bit slower.

VOLUME 3
Drum solo time! This is a 3:31 drum solo that is practically ALL layered shimmies :) Be afraid! LOL.

Seriously, this is a VERY modern drum solo -- think lots of tick tock pops and locks and shimmies over everything. This looks NOTHING like the drum solo from her IAMED video. It's a long and technically pretty difficult piece, but I would imagine if you worked your way through this, your technique would be SO precise and tight!

I don't really have a lot to say about this piece, because this dvd was the last one I watched and I was really tired !

PERFORMANCES:
Each dvd has a couple of performances on it, one of the choreography and one of something else. The performance filming is ... well, it's typical of Arab concerts. Pan away during the little intricate stuff, focus on the audience for a while, come back and watch the dancer for a little while. Alternate cuts here and there. BLECH. But typical.

We get the Monkey-cam and quick cutting, and some rather bad lighting at times. These performances are filmed at what looks like a large auditorium, instead of the intimate coffee-shop feel of the first set of dvds.

There are some CUTE performances, including one of Jillina doing an interesting take on the goblet dance -- she's dancing on the head of a Doumbek! The filming was off-putting to me, but I'm old and I like things to stand still.

All in all, I like these dvds and can see them having quite a bit of "air time" in my dvd player. I'm pleased with quality and quantity of material on each dvd and think the price is fair for what you get.

I'll review her workout video in another post. Thanks for trudging through all this! If you have any specific questions, please post them and I'll try to be more specific for you once I've had a chance to really sit down and WATCH these without also watching the stove.

I recently attended Jillina's workshop and the song she used for the choreography is called "Oriental" by Charbel Rouhana. Does anybody know what album this song is on? I have been searching everywhere and can't see to find it.
Thank you!!
Was watching Jillina's amazing Instructional Bellydance Level 3 and was so blown away anew by her character, skill, rhythm, connection to the drumming, personal expression...the whole package she displays as a teacher and in her solo performance. I am a tribal style dancer but after taking her workshop, seeing her in BDSS and using her instructional DVDs I am becoming a big fan of the Oriental dance style she embodies. Moreover, I really appreciate how she grounded both the workshop experience and her instructional video by verbally instilling a respect of the cultures from which the dances stem and how she asks us to respect them. I like what she has to say about taking from her and other teachers but always with an eye towards making the dance you own. If I could make it to Detroit's suburbs to take her workshop as well as Rachel Brice's I would but I can't unless a miracle occurs, meanwhile I'll try to imbue my dance with some of her vibe & wisdom from what I have experienced of her. I've been a teacher for a long time and I do not normally heap praise on other teachers, since teaching is my job and I know it well--I'm typically very critical about teaching techniques and styles but all I can do with Jillina's work is stand in awe. Just practicing today with her DVD made my day!

It's not everyday that you can say you've studied with Sonia, Bozenka, Amar Gamal and Saida who are considered today's top bellydance teachers. This instructional DVD is a must for dancers that want to attain a strong bellydance base. Movements are clearly broken down in a simple manner.

Music From Le Serpent Rouge CD

If Queen Victoria, Edward Gorey, Django Reinhardt and Little Egypt got together for a tea party, who would entertain them?
The Indigo Belly Dance and Miles Copeland bring you Le Serpent Rouge. Vintage cabaret meets vagabond elegance in a strange brew of Bellydance and Ragtime, Vaudevillian, Mid-Eastern and Gypsy music. Sometimes enchanting, sometimes macabre, often raucous, but always delightful, these performers breathe new life into the movement and spectacle of a bygone era in this knockdown revue.

Featuring: Beats Antique, Pentaphobe, The Upper Egypt Ensemble, Kocani Orkestar

TRACK LISTING:

1. Egypto Fantasia - Henry Doktorski

I have seen Jillina on instructional videos and also on the first Bellydance-Superstars-DVD. Here in Germany she is also very popular. People always talk about Jillina like about a mystical phenomenon.

Now can you put in words what is so fantastic about her? I see that she has got a style of her own but it doesn't get to me the way Amar Gamal gets to me. I also see why Rachel Brice impresses people although I would not chose her style as my ideal. But the Jillina-thing I haven't understood. So I am here to hear from her numerous adorers what is so unique about her? Can you explain it?

Thank you in advance for your answers, and please don't attack me because I'm struck with blindness in front of your goddess...

Now I stumbled upon the thing that the song is actually more than a minute longer than Jillina's choreo, meaning that she had the song customized to her choreography on her DVD. How can I get hold of the proper piece of music I'd need? I wanted to dance this one on a friends party at the end of march.

Since I have another version of this Hakim song which I like better (he sings a lot more), I would like to finish the piece. But I have no experience in choreographing at all. Some things could be repeated, but I have little practise in breaking down a song and analysing, and I can do basic steps, but all repeating and stepping would inevitably make this quite long part rather boring...

Does anyone have the lyrics? it would be of great help to structure the song...

Anyway, I am part of a bellydancing by video yahoo group and some of us were discussing Jillina's level 1 routine and I offered to send them my personal notes that I took of this. The moderator said I need to get permission from the producer to do that.

So here is my question: Is it okay or not to share personal notes that I took of a video? I honestly didn't think it was wrong, since it was my personal notes....if you don't know the routine it wouldn't make sense to anyone anyway?

Just want to find out so that I am not doing anything "illegal".

Sorry in advance if I am. I won't do it anymore...
I didn't realize Jillina come in here when I joined! I'd like to introduce myself to all of you, I started dancing in winter 3 yrs ago I have this really big problem of gaining a ton of weight in winter so I go to the local book/DVD/music store to pick up an arobic's DVD, well the belly dance dvd's were in the same place and I find a Jillina DVD! I always wanted to learn how to bellydance and "thought well why not now!" Best choice I ever made! I'm now hooked! And I owe it all to Jillina!! I'm also very interested in tribal dance after seeing Rachel Brice in a BD Super Stars DVD, actually I love all forms of dance! But belly is the way to go!! Hope to get to know some of you! I hope I didn't make this too long lol!
Keep on dancing!

I was in brazil visiting Adriana, on the right end of photo, and it happened to be the same time Luxor festival was going on. My friend lives in the same city as the festival!!! That week Amir thaleb, farida fahmy, Najua from brazil, and Hadia of canada! my friends and i were at the Amir Thaleb workshop, and jillina came up to us and started asking a few questions! I figured because we were just about the only people in the room speaking english besides Amir (thank goodness he taught in English) She was very sweet and nice to talk to. I wish we had enough time to take her workshop too, but we only went that one day.

So that evening was the Amizade show (Friends night) You could sign up to dance in that evenings show. So of course Ingrid and I did. Adriana just had laser eye surgery a week before ingrid and i got there, so no make up for her for a while so she didnt want to perform. I was so very impressed that evening. It really showed me that Jillina, Hadia, Najua, Tony Mousayek (famous lebanese singer in brazil) and Hayet all stayed and watched the entire show. Each and every single dancer they watched. I would say it was about 3 to 4 hour show. I can say there was another dancer that took a group of people to brazil. She however only came and watched her group of people, who came with her on the tour ,and then left.

I have a lot of respect for those "Famous Dancers" who stayed and watched us "Unknowns" perform! I just hold that great memory and that honor they made me feel that evening. I performed for Hadia, Hayet, Tony, Najua, and Jillina!!! ;)

That photo was taken after that long show! ;)

The fusion workshop had a lot of movements and fun interactions. It had some cute little tricks ideas for a fun performance. Jillina always does very good workshops. If you ever have the chance to take one do so. She doesn't just teach you dance she tells you about her experiences with dancing path and her travels. I think that is really great when you get to hear the teacher thoughts and what they have experienced, especially when they are well traveled.

The flamenco instructor who was there came in, stopped dead, mouth open, and pointed to Jillian. "Is her name Jillian?" "Jillina," I said, "But that may be a stage name." The woman went on to say she used to take ballet classes, years ago, and there was a woman who was a dead ringer for Jillina named Jillian, with red hair, same smile, same build, who was in her class with her for quite a while.

Does anyone know where Jillina was when she was in her late teens to late 20's? The woman's comment, though, at the end was funny, "You know, she always DID have what it took...." (i.e. to be a performer)

I found it funny to watch on BDSS DVD that Jillina at her second performance seemed to be singing almost the whole song El Salaam by Hakim as her lips are moving with the words. It was as if she didn't care that she was filmed. But then again she's a professional performer. I don't know what to make of it. It looks like watching someone in private who just enjoys herself. Then she sees you kind of watching through the window and waves her hand at you along with the words Salaam Aleikum and then continues, like a neighbour you accidentally saw. I don't speak arab so maybe it has got to do with what the song says?
