If you happened to book your room outside of our block, please drop an email to Samira@bellydanceintensive.com so we can make sure that the event gets credit for your booking, although you will need to contact Palace Station directly to get our rates.

I have been asked to be the Director of Volunteers for the LV Intensive 2009. I am looking for enthusiastic, fun loving people who want to take part in one of the biggest and best events Las Vegas has to offer. So many performers come to Las Vegas and witness first-hand the comradery and family like atmosphere at this event and a great part is owed to all the wonderful and generous volunteers we count on each year.

Additionally, volunteers get the added perks of taking some classes or attending the shows for free, and have fun. There are many opportunities to be involved in. We need people to be ushers,to help at the registration tables, and to check people into classes. We also need help running the festival stage, runners for vendors & performers, personal assistants to the teachers, etc. We'd enjoy having some "belly husbands" who want to help move, set up, and tear down equipment as well as dealing with technical aspects of the event. Please join our Bellydance Intensive family. If you are interested, please e-mail me direct at reema@bellydanceintensive.com.

I’m here at the airport en route to Cairo – Oh my!

Yes, I’m continuing study as I have been for most of April & May. Stay tuned – Princess Farhana and I are traveling together. No, we’re not going for a festival, we’re just going to be hanging out with our friends absorbing culture and taking private lessons. Yeah!
So to showcase all this newfound info, our June/July class schedules will change slightly:

Tuesdays 6:30pm – Foundations in Egyptian Dance – Focusing on specifically Egyptian stylings, we will consider some of the more common movement textures with an eye on proper muscle control, foundations and expression using modulations.

Tuesdays 7:45pm – “What I learned on my Summer Break” – A hands on expression of the material I’ve been getting, from characteristic stylings of Egyptian dancers, to cultural information and much much more. Unlock the world of authentic Raqs Sharqi!

Wednesdays 7:15pm for a TWO Hour Class – “Improvisational Techniques in Egyptian Dance” – From movement textures, to modulations through music theory, rhythm knowledge and unlocking that improvisational experiential spark that MAKES this dance what it is. No choreography, no telling you what to do, but how to express the music in Egyptian style! This is unlike any other class you’ve ever had – and enjoy the benefits of having a musician AND a dancer train you to find the spirit of the dance!
For class information, pricing and schedule, visit www.JimBozSchoolOfDance.com

Got a question? I’ll be out of the country!
I probably won’t have net access because I’m not taking the laptop, but visit www.JimBoz.com for the latest info!

Just a couple a questions pour vous:

1. When and how can I buy my set of the Boz Zills?

2. What was that piece of music you were playing during today's master class? It was the piece that we did that little 4-part combination that ended with the tick-tock-tick, hip-bone circle, internal omi (a.k.a. roll) that I was having problems with? I'd love to have that entire piece of music, but I guess it would help if I knew the name of the track and the artist.

Merci mucho!

(PS) LOVED the workshops this weekend! Hope you'll be coming back to Phoenix again soon!!

Oreet has always been fascinated by the body and how it moves. Her family's Middle Eastern cultural roots exposed her to an array of ethnic sounds and rhythms, including traditional belly dance melodies. This inspired her to learn all she could about dance and movement, everything from gymnastics to ballet, jazz, modern, tap, and folkloric dance. Oreet became passionately committed to understanding the ins and outs of each genre and its impact on the body.

Oreet received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and Performance from SUNY College at Brockport, and later settled in New York City to perform with several modern dance companies. Simultaneously, she choreographed works of movement for emerging dance and theater companies and brought her professional dance expertise to fitness clubs around New York City. Excited by the health club trend of offering dance classes as a form of exercise, Oreet was eager to learn, become certified in, and teach all forms of bodywork. Her certifications with AFFA, Johnny G Spinning and Back Logic allowed her to teach hi/low-impact aerobics, step, body sculpting, spin, kickboxing and stretch classes at several popular fitness clubs.

By 1996, Oreet found herself increasingly frustrated. Something was missing from the "trendy" Oreet often overheard women who were seemingly committed to their dance classes and workouts complaining about their "problem areas" or poor body image. Like her students, Oreet was also working hard physically yet struggled with an unsatisfied sense of wellbeing. Motivated to reach all types of women, Oreet began experimenting with the workouts workouts and dance techniques she was being asked to teach. she offered.

Years of trial and error and ongoing feedback from her students and clients helped Oreet form her new technique. Returning to her roots, Oreet blended together the body-loving art form of belly dance, with the cardiovascular and toning benefits of fitness classes. SharQui - The bellydance workout™, was born.

After teaching SharQui in Manhattan and across the U.S. for almost ten years, Oreet has developed a following of students. The SharQui technique works on core strength, speed, isolation, stamina and, most importantly, focuses on positive self-image in a judgement-free environment. SharQui - The bellydance workout™, is perfect for those seeking a new and exciting way to get fit and for the serious dancer looking to stay healthy and dance smarter.

Oreet continues to expose women to SharQui's philosophy and methods. She currently teaches master classes and just developed her new workout, Belly Blast by SharQui™ where weighted belts are implemented for an advanced SharQui workout. Oreet also teaches the SharQui method as ACE and AFFA continuing education credits and is a regular presenter at the Sara City Workout Fitness Conventions, ECA and other health and wellness expos throughout the country.

SharQui-The bellydance workout™ DVD is available through Amazon.com.

Multi Award Winning Zaina Hart is a charismatic performer whose trademark is her mesmerizing arm and hand movement and unique body styling. Zaina is a performer/choreographer who is also known for her precise hip articulation and fiery performances who has been performing Middle Eastern Dance for nearly 30 years. She currently resides in Vancouver, WA, where she maintains Zaina's House of Dance, (a Middle Eastern Dance Studio) and produces the Double Crown Belly Dance Competition™, Festival and International Bazaar * held annually the last weekend of September. Over the past 29 years, Zaina has had the opportunity to study with many of the "Master Performers and Musicians" of the Industry (see below) and has become a Master Teacher/Performer in her own right.

Zaina's style is "Basic Egyptian", however, she adds to this her own extraordinary flair - her personality, which depending on performance and music is a powerful mixture of elegance, playfulness, humor, and sensual. Zaina has the reputation of being able to interpret La Danse Orientale through nontraditional music and characters and as well has developed quite the reputation as Comedian and Emcee.

As Director of The Bedouin Babes she and her dance partner Aiyanna were honored to receive a first place title in the "Wiggles and Giggles" Category of Reno's very own Wiggles of the West Competition in a spoof on larger than life derrières. Two years later Zaina brought "Banana" to Reno's Wiggles of the West Competition and again received the "Wiggles and Giggles" first place title.

Zaina's current Troupe/s "Z-Ladies" and "Z-Girls" will be hitting the circuit in late 2005 with new choreographies, new performers and and lots of "Zzzzzzzip".

Zaina is the Owner and Editor in Chief of the newest and most exciting dancer's publication, The "Belly Dancer" Magazine. She is also the past Secretary of MED&CA (Middle Eastern Dance and Culture Association) and is still involved in Reptile rescue and preservation, having participated as a Board member of "Reptile World Zoo" which had been developed to provide hands-on education, scientific research, observation, a pure breeding environment, expert advice and care instructions about reptiles. She has also served as a Staff Writer for various Middle Eastern Dance publications (Wiggle Hips and Jareeda) with articles translated and reprinted in various European publications.

Zaina in PurpleZaina believes that what makes this dance so unique and beautiful is the differences in styles, age, gender, race, body form and passions of its performers. There is truly a place for everyone in this dance. Remembering that dance is an expression of life, and Middle Eastern Dance is the oldest form of dance documented, there is little doubt that the experience of this dance will be a positive, joyous one.

Because of her unique teaching and performing style, Oregon Public Broadcasting approached her in 1999 to assist in the making of as well as be featured in a Documentary about Middle Eastern Dance and its effect on the lives of the women and men who have chosen the art form for their creative outlet. The Documentary was shortened to an "Art Beat" segment which to date has aired on three separate occasions and received the most votes for re-airing in the summer of 2003.

INFLUENCES/INSTRUCTORS: There have been many wonderful instructors along the way. Zaina's style has specifically been influenced by the teachings of Masters such as; Jamilla and Fatima Al Wahid, Suzanna Del Vecchio, Mahmoud Reda, Ibrahim "Bobby" Farrah, Bert Balladine, Dalia Carella, Horacio Cifuentes, Morocco, Jodette, and many more. Her coach and long time instructor Halima, has helped hone her skills and bring Zaina to an awareness of "her own dance persona". As well, Zaina began studying film of who she believed were the "greats" of Orientale - Egyptian - Cabaret style dance in the early 80's. The greatest of these influences have been Naima Akef and Sohair Zaki and currently "Dina".

From Zaina: Instruction is a never ending process. I will take classes/lessons as long as I perform because it continues to challenge me dance skill, push me in different directions, and moves me "OUTSIDE THE BOX".
Zaina's Awards & Titles
In Jim's style of foundations, technique, concepts and texture sequencing, we will explore several combinations suitable for different styles of Middle Eastern & related dance including: Raks Sharki, Baladi, Jazz Fusion, tempo/dynamic changes, accents & more. Slow pacing at first to set the ground rules for a fast paced hi-nrg romp through dance styles and characteristics to enhance your repertoire!

Call Shari to register - and register asap. I'm teaching in a smaller room at the same time as Frederique's workshop, so the space is seriously limited - it will also be intense and awesome!
WORKSHOPS
Tribal Zilling: Beyond the Gallop (Friday 7-9pm)
Tired of the 1-2-3 pattern pervasive in ATS Bellydance? This workshop will help you explore other rhythms & create your own to go with group improvisational dance. Each move and combination will correspond with a different zill pattern, but the underlying formula is so simple, even a beginning tribe can spice up their zilling and create a unique musical presentation at the same time!

I Love the 80's (Saturday 11am-1pm)
Blue Lotus Tribe shows its age as they teach combos for tribal improv inspired by icons, movies, & musicians from the 1980's. Get ready to have fun & take a fresh look at 20 years ago! There will be some floorwork in this class. Kneepads are recommended.

The Next Level (Saturday 2:30-4:30)
Blue Lotus Tribe will offer you a new dimension in tribal improv-- fast combinations that change levels. Drawing on inspiration from
other fabulous dancers and their own new and fresh ideas for changing up the level of their dance, Blue Lotus Tribe will teach some of its dynamic signature combinations. There will be some floorwork in this class. Kneepads are recommended.

I have a blend for you, but need to know where to send it, and if your ideas have changed as to what goes in it. I am sending Zaina's out tomorrow, but I want to get yours out in time for Rakkasah!

In other words, Ladies, our own Boz is getting his very own Glitter Raks color (eye glitter). And I welcome your input as to what you feel he should be sporting! Something sandy/chocolate martini-ish, but what kinds of colors together would you like to see our Boz sporting? This way, next time you see him on stage, and his eyes are all a-glitter, you can say, "I helped design that. Now I'm going to go have a mojito and celebrate."
It seems that after male Egyptian belly dance star Tito's show a few months back, many were electrified by Man Of Middle Eastern Dance, Jim Boz. Maybe it was his syncopated butt clenches... or maybe it was the four ouzos... :))))) who knows? But now he's coming back to Toronto to teach a workshop of his own.

I've taken one of Jim's workshop before, and he's a fun and friendly teacher with LOADS of information to share. He was also one of my early influences with his all-male Tribal troupe, Sons Of The Padisha.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll go home with new moves and new ways of thinking about your dance. Okay... maybe you won't cry. Maybe Jim'll make you laugh to tears.

Sunday December 10th I will be teaching and performing in the Santa Clara (south of San Francisco) area of California

Come on down and check out two workshops I'm very proud to present:
1 - Dynamic Drills and Techniques: From sassy, we'll break down a few combinations into edible chunks, beginning with drills and exercises to achieve the proper presentation, through concept, energy flow, weight transitions, arm frames and all the delicious things that make the Middle Eastern dance geeks drool! I have not only concepts to share like texture sequencing and morphing, but a very different way of breaking down the steps to learning how to learn sequences of movements. I've heard some great feedback, and I'd love to hear yours -- come on down to check out the workshop. Although this class is suitable to all levels, I've found that beginning students find themselves able to grasp complex concepts, and advanced students and pros have been able to find that extra little twist intheir foundations that helps them excel in a new direction. I'm very proud of this material. I recently taught it on the East Coast to rave reviews.

2 - Shimmy Layers/Drum Solo & Accents/ Master Class: Oh, let me challenge you! I have such a different way of teaching choreographies. I really hope to inspire teachers to teach in a similar method, because although it takes alot of work to set up, you'll be amazed at how fast your students can grasp concepts of motion, energy, technique and expression! Add into it some of my signature concepts of foundation technique (TikTokBlehEenh!) and shimmy layers and we'll put together a more complex presentation of my latest drum solo choreography. It's most delicious!

My signature teaching style is designed to assist dancers move from 'doing moves' to moving and interpreting the music, defining textures that are organic rather than pure mechanics. It's the smoulder....the passion...Yum!

And then, I get to perform at a restaurant!
Those of you who know my performances know my big stage work. I'll admit, I love working restaurants. The intimate environment allows a fun presentation of the dance. I'm *really* looking forward to this show and getting to entertain. Ask the people who used to go to the restaurants I performed at in my...um....30's. :)

Gala show includes Alexandria, Tatseen, Una and more!

SO -- as a treat, here's one of my fave fall cocktails. Remember that here in SD, 'fall' is like 85 degrees:

Boz's Zombie
1 pt Meyers Rum
1 pt Bacardi Gold
1 pt Bacardi Limon
1 pt Malibu Coconut
1 pt Cap'n Morgan's Spiced Rum
1/2 part triple sec
1/2 part apricot brandy
1 pt pineapple juice
1 pt guava (or mango) juice
1/2 pt orange juice

Shake with ice. Pour into freakin tall glass, drizzle a little grenadine in it (giving it that rainbow effect) and 5-7 maraschino cherries.
mmm...cherries

Fall time carbo load.
With a kick.
