The more I work out in karate learning to be the “invincible” expert the more I damage vital body parts. (If the time ever comes where I need to defend myself I swear the fight will end not because of me but because they took pity on a partial cripple.) Last year alone, besides the litany of minor issues such as the wear and eventual tear of the soles of my feet, I ended up partially destroying both shoulders, mangled two and half vital finger joints, from those always pleasant hand clashes, received a split lip and bruised ribs. So what were your top injuries last year and do tell the story if you are so inclined…

Re: Injuries
Wed, January 25, 2006 - 4:09 PMEver since January of this year, I've pulled my right hamstring muscle -- and that was a pain when we had to practice front kicks. And then during Winter training, I've irritated the rotating joints around my left shoulder -- probably from over-extending when I punched. And then I come down with the flu. But yeah, no headaches yet ; ) -

Re: Injuries
Thu, January 26, 2006 - 10:43 AMWell.. I started the year out.. due to my stupid back.. which really has nothing to do with karate I feel. But.. my physical therapist keeps telling me karate is the worst thing for it. I still need to send her pictures of me getting my Nidan! That will show her! Ha!
Anyway.. I did get a black eye during my Nidan test.. Oopsie. And Umm.. that's pretty much it.. Oh.. Someone did get me pretty good in the ribs one day.. and I had trouble breathing for several weeks.. But.. I feel like I got out pretty clean compared to you guys! Maybe I'm not doing enough sparring! -

Re: Injuries
Thu, January 26, 2006 - 11:42 AMLets see - aside from the inevitable forearm bruising that makes karate women appear to be victims of domestic violence, I have:
- sprained both thumbs (oh, so I'm supposed to make a tight fist? I see... lessons learned)
- strained a hip flexor (thank you, mawashigeri)
- gotten patellar tendinitis (not due to overuse, but due to contact - my opponent didn't draw the foot up to the knee on the way into maegeri, and hit my knee on the way up. Twice. And once on the other knee.)
Thankfully no concussions... Karen did kick me in the stomach, though ( ; Hiro-Senpai's response when he heard my grunt? "Thaaaaat's it!" -

Fri, January 27, 2006 - 9:19 AM: ) No apologies required! It's all good - remember, I learned (the hard way... courtesy of Taka-Senpai) to keep them abs tense whenever a kick is coming. Juuuuust in case.

Re: Injuries
Thu, January 26, 2006 - 10:40 PMOh the ironies, today I received a bloody nose, a huge knot on my shin and a torn toe. I am icing down as I write.
