Summer camp

Hey.. with all this talk about Master Camp and Fall Camp..

I have to tell you how AMAZING the SKI-D summer camp was! It was one of the best camps I had been to in a long time!

Sensei Yano and Sensei Izumiya taught.. And it was extremely enlightening..

It was like all this stuff they had been telling me for years.. and years.. and years.. and ok.. years.. finally sunk in..

At least into my brain..

I guess my body has to get it now..

But.. thus the process..

And to get the extra motivation! I know we have posted about that before.. how to stay motivated.. and such..

Anyway.. that's all for now.

Ok.. we have been pretty quite lately..

and how can we be a JKA tribe.. without talking about the JKA/iSKF split..right?

(oh.. no.. !! what will this mean for the only two regular posters.. who are ISKF members! Well.. all karate-ka will always be welcome here.. !!)

Anyway.. I will only say this.. I'm sure this was not an easy decision..

I only hope.. as karate students.. it will not effect our ability to learn from all the great instructors out there.. whether they are JKA/ISKF/SKI-D/WKF/SKA/ or whatever letters they happen to be teaching under.

So.. I have been a pretty bad moderator..sorry..
And our group has been pretty quite as of late.

But.. here is something I have been thinking about.. and I throw this out for you to chime in with your experiences.

I have been making trips to Colombia lately.. and I look forward to training there the next time I go.. (Altitude and all.. )

I tend not to train when I travel.. but I know people who have great stories about visiting dojos in other countries..

Let's just say.. our fellow karate-ka are usually quite the hosts.. (unless they are breaking your hand... of course.. but that is another story.. and not mine to tell.. )

So where is the most exotic place you trained.. and what was your experience there?

And feel free to post with any of your own topics..

It's almost spring.. that usually means good things for me when it comes to training.. like it's reborn with the good weather..

Look forward to reading your posts.

Hello, I am new to this tribe. First I would like to thank you for accepting me. I've been training in Redding California for the past 9 months. I feel that I am starting to get a grasp of what shotokan is coming from shou shu kung fu style.I have recently been shown Bassai-dai I really like the swift changes from block to block . I am looking forward to learning tekki because I am rather comfortable in horse stance. I am looking forward to learning not just from my sensei but from anyone who may have tips for me...

I have been out for a while (one month - torn calf thing), but I finally got back to it this week. You know I realized that training, karate is really a part of my soul at this point, it just is me. I walked in and just pick up and went with the class. This morning we did some fun drills. Starting with left leg forward free kami, The attacking side attacked with shifting in kizame jodan, while the the defending side shifted right perpendicular to the attack, blocking jodan harai-uke and countering with front leg mawashi-geri chudan then back leg ashi-barai to the attacking sides front leg. It was fun....

How exciting.

I wish everyone lots of luck.. and a safe trip.

I know there is one member of our tribe who is part of the USA women's kata team..

Hopefully when she returns she will share her experiences with us.. and maybe a few pictures.

But until then..

USA team rocks! :O)

I want to open a discussion about discipline.

Where and when does abusive language..and physical abuse fit into to karate traiing.

Or does it at all..

In my opinion.. most messages can be translated without such action... And such action.. does not create loyal students..

Is it better to weed out students by using such exteme measures.. Or do you also risk weeding out some of the most loyal?

I am curious to hear what people have to say on the subject.

but I am most curious to know what Gichin Funikoshi would have said.

What are some of the most extreme discipline measures you have seen.. and how did they make you feel about your karate training. How have you justified them.

Well.. I've been home from Master Camp for a week.. and am still riding the Master Camp high.. (even though Marc.. your absence was definitely felt :O( )

So.. I figured it would be cool to share some of those little moments from either Master Camp 2006.. or any camp in your past.. that have really stuck with you..

Whether it's just something you needed to hear at the moment.. like Sensei Koyama's lecture on why it's important to relax.. and have fun in karate..

Or practical.. Like Sensie Okazaki telling you "to just keep training!"

Or something you just continue to think about for what ever reason.. Like Mikami Sensei teaching us to twist our hips with our knife hand blocks.. instead of moving your hips back.

Or doing some complicated drill with Sensei Ochi.. that makes you feel like you've never moved so fast in your life..

Or even moments with your fellow karate-ka.. where you figure out some really cool bunkai to Hangetsu..

I'm also looking forward to the SKD-I summer camp just a few weeks away.. and more inspiring moments to come..

Ways to keep sane while not training

Ok.. for those who know me.. you know I like to train.. a lot..

Well.. My back has been all messed up.. and between that.. and life.. I have been out of training for the last two weeks.. And right now.. i don't see myself getting back to class until at Friday.. at the very earliest..

So.. I was looking for ways you keep sane.. when you can't train.

I used to try to go watch classes in Philly.. but it would bum me out.. way too much.
So that is out.

This time.. I am reading more philosophical type books.. rather then instructional ones.. Things that exercise my mind a bit..

But it's still no substitution.

Marc.. I know you have been injured in the past.. any good ideas?
Dojo Etiquette

For godsakes never foget dojo etiquette even if there are only two people in class. I was one of two, the other of which let etiquette laps. Both of us were punished equally, probably as I was senpai, barely, and did not stop things - my stomach muscles may never recover.

Hey.. this is kind of gross.. but seriously..

I started this topic on another site.. and someone had an interesting recommendation.

What do you do to get the yellow out of your gi?

Someone suggested Tilex!

I need to try that.

Any suggestions?

And hey.. if your gi isn't yellow.. you just aren't training hard enough!

Senpai Stories

I've reflected lately on how wonderful it is to have good Senpai. It is impossible for me to separate my experience in karate thus far from the influence of those who have helped me along the way with their kindness and expertise. I'm hoping we can share stories here, even though I know the thread couldn't possibly hold them all.

At a recent event, someone was kind enough to accept my request for her assistance in diagnosing what was wrong with my roundhouse kick. This had been plaguing me for quite some time, yet in seconds she recognized - AND was able to clearly articulate to me - what the problem was, and took the time to help me to fix it right there. As if that weren't enough, she then began to offer me some really helpful insights into sparring, as I am about to cross the threshold into semi-free/free. She even included some demonstration to help me understand what she meant. An image comes to mind - it's like she was filled with buried treasure, and all I had to do was ask before she'd start spitting priceless jewels at me faster than I could catch them.

Just tonight I was practicing after my class and before the next. One guy was warming up across the room, but I noticed that he was watching me run through my kata out of the corner of his eye. Sure enough, before I rose from my bow at the end he was there, offering help with some of my techniques. He stopped his own warmup for this. The thing is, he has done this before. It's like having my big brother around taking an interest in my progress and looking out for me.

Both of these individuals are very skilled and well-respected in the dojo, and incidentally, fourth dan. It is beyond wonderful to see and know how genuine is their desire to help those coming up behind them; I truly believe that they see others' progress as their own. We are a family. With their example, they are shaping the Senpai I hope to one day become.

Opinions anyone?

This of course is an easy one in so much as respect is the cornerstone of everything. But it is never more so important in the dojo where we are constantly punching and kicking one another which results inevitably in the occasional clash and injury (see number 8). Without respect and friendship injuries tend to cause blood pressures to rise which is not a good thing inside a dojo. Remember we are all friends even when they give you a black eye or in my case a minor concussion from a roundhouse kick to the head that just happened to hit the magic spot.

The more I work out in karate learning to be the “invincible” expert the more I damage vital body parts. (If the time ever comes where I need to defend myself I swear the fight will end not because of me but because they took pity on a partial cripple.) Last year alone, besides the litany of minor issues such as the wear and eventual tear of the soles of my feet, I ended up partially destroying both shoulders, mangled two and half vital finger joints, from those always pleasant hand clashes, received a split lip and bruised ribs. So what were your top injuries last year and do tell the story if you are so inclined…

Training is a lifelong process, no doubt about that. But I'm sure it makes more sense to break it down into intervals (weekly/monthly/yearly) so that we can pace ourselves and not get overwhelmed with so much that we have to learn (AND put into practice).

So with this opportunity of a New Year's Day coming, I would like to post a topic to invite all of you to share your insights on what you have learned that was most valuable to your training/personal life last year, and what you are looking forward to in the year ahead?
