I need to give a 10 minute presentation over a religious ceremony/ritual or rite of passage in my World Religions class and I recalled this story from one of the Campbell books I read. I can't remember which it's in for sure but I think it's in the Power of Myth. He talks about a tribe where once the boys reach a certain age, all the men in the village dress up and come in the night and kidnap them. Seems like they leave them a distance from home and they have to find their way back to become real men and there is a celebration afterwards. I'd be utterly grateful to anyone who could shed some light on this for me, I'm really interested in researching it and learning more.

Re: Anyone recall Campbell writing about a kidnapping ritual as a rite of passage?
Fri, November 20, 2009 - 6:13 PMThough there may be other sources (even from Campbell), there's an article written by Bill Moyers, quoting Campbell telling a story like the one you describe. I found it at: www.progressivechristianwitness.org/pcw/pdf/Exp_MoyersATimeHeresy.pdf
