I'm likely going to drive my own car and have room for at least one more person, if not two. I can ride with someone else as well, but really need to be home Sunday mid afternoon.
I've been toying with this idea for several years now, and this year's JT seems like a very fitting and appropriate place to do a bit of actual "playing around". What if we were to do this with didgeridoos? We'd need 5 or 8 or 12 willing people, at least that many didgeridoos in harmonic accordance, some kind of music we could all read (I have some ideas on that) and a piece or two to play. It doesn't have to be too fancy or complicated--I bet the audience would love it!
Intrigued? Interested? Worth a try? Reply here and let's see if we can get a short piece together for the JT Ensemble!!

Couple things I picked up on over the years -- tips, if you will, that might make things a bit more comfy for folks from the east.

- Moisturizing lotion. Nothing fancy. For your feet -- ESPECIALLY if you're gonna wear sandals. Humidity is SO low, that the skin on my feet cracked. Ouchy. Bring lotion.

- Flying into Fresno? Make SURE to pack to TSA guidelines for your trip back home! They are sticklers for the rules there. I guess they're bored, dunno....

- If you can, and I know it might be difficult, avoid flying on United -- especially if you're connecting into Fresno. All I'll say on that!

- Sun screen -- a no-brainer.

- With the dew-point at like -45 degrees kelvin, it gets pretty dang chilly in the evenings. If you can afford the space in the suitcase - pack layers

- Guys, if you're inclined to wear a kilt - bring it with you. Apparently there's a kilt-subculture within the international didge community
(Mine no longer, fits, Per, so ferget about it)

- Sunglasses. Another no-brainer.

- Hat. Ball caps work. Even better is something with a wide brim.

- Chapstick! Especially if it has an SPF. Low huimidity=chapped/cracked lips=hard to play didge! Bring it, you'll be glad you did!

Add to the list if you can think of more stuff!!
This is a fun workshop for beginners who have never played didgeridoo before. We will cover the basics of getting the drone, circular breathing, vocals and simple rhythms and moreas well as have a laugh or two along the way.

We'll cover more about circular breathing and how to get it and include it in rhythms as well as covering a more meditative approach to this seemingly elusive technique. We will also explore rhythms and techniques and how to put them together to make a song. If you do not have a didgeridoo, no worries, I will have extras on hand.

Hello everyone, I just joined this Group, and I have been a didge player/collector for almost 6 years now. I attended my first JT didgefest in 2004 when the JT stood for Joshua Tree, and I believe that 2004 was the last year that it was held in Joshua Tree. I live in the Phoenix (Ahwatukee) AZ area, so when the location was moved to California, my drivetime went from 4 hours to 11 hours, so I found it more difficult to attend. But this year I decided to just make it happen. Part of the reason that I wanted to attend was to be there to support Rob and Tanya as I have become friends with them over the past several years. I was so glad that I came this year and I found myself energized and inspired to attend future years. Unfortunately, I see that Next year will be the last year. I am experiencing a similar sense of sadness as I did when the Didgeridoo and Co magazine ceased to exist, but I can understand that the planning of such an event must require an incredible amount of energy, and I am grateful to everyone who has been involved in the planning and execution of the Fest over the past 9 years.

I am also acquainted with Svargo from the Didjshop.com in Kuranda Australia. He has started a Worldwide Didgeridoo Meditation. The next one will be Sept 23rd. How to participate is simple. Play your didge for 45 min at sundown on the 23rd and then observe 15 min of silence. It is a way to be a part of a worldwide didgeridoo community. He had asked me to pass out flyers at JT, and sent it to me via E mail, but unfortunately, it didn't arrive before I left, so I am trying to still spread the word. He started this to send positive didgeridoo sound/energy around the world

You can see more information here:

http://www.didjshop.com/shop1/didgeridoo_meditation_next.html

I can also say that Svargo is a great guy who runs a great didgeridoo business and gives top notch customer service. Additionally, 5 of my 18 didges are from the Didjshop.com, and a highend didjshop didge is among the best that I have played. Also, I have no business connection with the Didjshop, so have no financial interst in saying this.

Anyway, have a look at the Worldwide Didgeridoo meditaion, and I will be happy to get to know people in this group. I am also interested in meeting up with Advanced Didge players in the Phoenix Area.

Jen and I are taking our sound healing event on the road for a sound tour from Portland down to Joshua Tree in May. I'm looking for connections with places that might be interested in hosting our Sound Awakening event.
It's an hour of didjeridus, gongs, Tibetan bowls, flute and more. We spend most of the time on our feet floating through the room playing on/over people so they feel as well as hear the soundwaves.

I've been doing this group sound night in Portland for about 5 years and the last 10 or so of my 14 years with the didjeridu has been focused on sound healing. I can't not do it and I love it. I'd happily provide you many references if that would make a difference... or just ask Chad! It was a special treat to share this past Tuesday with him and Ondrej in Portland - an hour of Ondrej rocking our socks off followed by another hour of our sound meditation journey... and a repeat performance this Tuesday!

For this trip we're especially looking for contacts in the general vicinity of Chico, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Big Sur, LA, San Diego and Joshua Tree. Not sure we'll get to all of these but I've been working on this trip for 2 months now and things really aren't falling in to place yet so I'm seeing what opens up for us.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd really love to hear from you. I'm not on Tribe much these days but will be checking in for this. I respond very quickly to email at tomlange1@yahoo.com

It looks like we have a festival ground & firm date for a weekend Rocky Mountain didgeridoo festival. The inspiring Dream Weaver Sanctuary is several acres in the Crestone area, at the foot of the glorious Sangre de Christo Mountains in southern Colorado. This is a new location about 35 miles from Joy’s place.

It is a green site so we compost and recycle everything. There will be potlucks and the End of the Road Café will be serving up yummy coffee and maté treats, and with everyone’s help can be a communal kitchen. This will be a self-sufficient camping event, be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms. Lodging is available nearby in the town of Crestone. It’s hoped that each person can do an hour or two of volunteer work a day, and it looks like we’ll be able to offer work trade & sliding scale.

The date for the festival is August 21-23 … this is one week after California’s Jammin’ Tree festival and two weeks after both the Crestone Music Festival and In-didj-in-us in Oregon. Ondrej Smeykal sounded excited about playing in Crestone, and other international artists will likely perform. They will need to travel great distances, so support them with your generous donation.

The hope is to draw audience and performers from around the region, and showcase mountain-state talent. There’s enthusiastic didj communities in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and a well-organized bunch in Colorado Springs as well. There are a number of players and makers here in the San Luis Valley as well. Everyone is invited to play, either in a performance slot, open mic, ceremony, or sound healing. The End of the Road Café will be a small, intimate venue for acoustic performances and open mic… so volunteer to be a barista! Everyone is also encouraged to set up a booth to show their wares, or offer instruments informally by leaning them up against a tree. Anyone may offer a workshop.

Volunteers can work on festival coordination, publicity, booking acts, being an act, setting up the physical site, website, fund raising, you name it. Remember… it is YOUR festival, be a leader!

There will be a one-day potluck fund raising & planning event at north of Denver in Dacono Saturday June 6, the same date & place as last year’s event. If you remember It’ll be a great place to jam and have a blast!

Super big thanks to all the people who have made it possible to get this far.

A new yahoo group is forming for volunteers & performers… please contribute your ideas and be a part of making it real.

I have recently started playing with the Wicked Tinkers and have a bit of a challenge for any of you crafters who feel you can make this happen! We play in the key of Bb+(matches the bagpipes) and have a great 7 foot long super low didge that lives on a stand (thanks Zumwalt!). We are in the market for a lightweight, portable( for romping through audiences and table dancing), good playing/sounding, and cool looking didge that plays a low Bb. It does not have to be as low as the big Zumwalt didge obviously, but we do not need it bumblebee high either. We have a great high Bb didge (thanks Chad!) and our horn. I think we are leaning more towards the hardwood or leather didges, but I am open for ideas! Let me know what you all think!

This is Pam.

I got bit by the performing bug so at the risk of shameless self-promotion, I’m starting the process of scheduling some performances (gigs) and didgeridoo workshops around the Seattle and Puget Sound area (and beyond?) and wanted to ask if anyone in these areas would be interested in learning more about what I’m doing. If so, please let me know and I can put you on an emailing list. Or if you’d rather you can visit www.pamelamortensen.com and where you’ll find an email sign up on the home page as well as more information about what I do.

Also, if you know of any venues in your area that you think a didgeridoo performance would fit, let me know about that too. I’m covering as many places as I can but locals always know of a place I may end up missing.

Thanks for your help and see you soon!
Being that Tribe.net seems to be down as much as it is up these days; I would like to suggest that we all reconnect over at facebook.
I do not want to lose the connections that I have made here if Tribe goes down for good.
I have started a "Group" there called "didgeridoo tribe".

The description reads:
A continuation of the Didgeridoo group, formerly on Tribe.net. A place to discuss all things didgeridoo including, but not limited to: Instruments, techniques, performers, and festivals.

If you are leary of Facebook, believe me, it has crossed over. It is no longer just high schoolers and endless games. It is quickly becoming the premiere online social networking site.

No pressure, and you certainly don't gotta - but I hope to see most, if not all, of you there.
I will cross-post this to several of the didge tribes here.
I wish that I had the personal address of you all so I could write to you all individually.
Financially life can be tough for us all at times, this year I took a huge risk to come out to the JT festival
for just 3 days, i had no money to bring CD's or Didgeridoo's i just had enough money to bring my Heart, Soul and Spirit.
The generosity of my JT family was incredible, and I cannot thank you all enough for the support that you offered me.
I love what I do and it is never about money but when you have a family to support it makes times easier.
Because of your love and generosity you allowed for me to cover my costs of travel and go home with some extra money.
On the Sunday night after the festival I was back in LA, and I became overwhelmed with emotions at just how giving you all were. Tears of joy welled in my eyes, and I just sat in complete Gratitude, you all individually touched my heart and words really do know justice to what I am trying to say.
You are all so special to me, there are a few people that I want to make special mention of, firstly Grahm and Trish for there commitment in organizing the Festival and allowing all the didj family to come together. All the volunteers and sound engineers. Jeff and Sara (Hallowed Sounds) for always being there and supporting me, To Jason and Karen for your generosity you really touched me. To Chad for all his tireless commitment to keep the event safe and loving. To Per and Eileen for all their love and support I wish I could see you more than once a year. To Ron for providing me with transport(JTD Express). To my Lazy Kangaroo family, thanks for feeding me and just supporting me. There are so many others who individually supported me, so thank you.
2009 is going to be the final year of the festival, and so I look forward to coming across and spending time with you all on my trip.

And so I've been thinking, what is something that inspires me, something I'm interested in, so that I can make this website amazing? But I want to create a website for the didj community, maybe with info, news, upcoming events, maybe even a post like Tribe (not sure what that entails and if I'm capable of it, but if it's something you're interested in, I will learn how to do it!) Does anyone have any ideas? Anything you would LOVE to see online for the didj community? I would love as much input and ideas as possible to make this website truly useful.
Do you have any ideas?
Do you have any good resources for me?

Hello Jay ~

I am hosting a celebration for my 50th birthday on Saturday Nov.3 with live music and I am trying to find a didjeridu player to be a part of the evening - as a special guest musician. I live in Mtn. View (between Sunnyvale and Palo Alto) and the party will be near by.

My family is Australian - I still have an elderly aunt and cousins living in Brisbane area. Didje music has always "spoken" to me (much like the bagpipes do... my Irish heritage coming thru) and I would like to have my friends experience and enjoy something that is meaningful to me.

I would appreciate any information you may be able to provide that would put me in touch with a didjerdu player who might be interested/willing to be involved in my birthday celebration. Thank you for your time and consideration.

~ Renee

So, here's the deal....
If you live in the area, and are interested, email me.

The conditions are:
You must be a more than reasonably proficient player.
You must be comfortable playing an entire solo set (45 mins or so - no chat, just background music)
You must also be comfortable joining in with a band for a tune or three - so knowledge of basic music stuff like keys will be very helpful.

There will be - as they say - "some pay" which means you're not gonna get rich, but it'll more than cover your gas.
I'm betting that food and drink will also be provided - but you'll have to work out the specifics with the host.

Interested? Let me know.

Peace

I hand-wrote these notes during the 90+ minute discussion & seminar presented by Ondrej Smeykal during the 2007 JT Didgeridoo Festival. Text in quotations is basically a direct quote from Ondrej… as best as I could document it while he was speaking, anyways. Much of the philosophy and theory behind his didgeridoo practice strategies and musical exploration are simple to comprehend, yet difficult for some to put into perspective. As a classically trained musician, I completely understand that you can’t walk the walk unless you pay your dues and spend hour after endless hour woodshedding material until it becomes effortless. Only after committing yourself to the instrument will the instrument truly say what you want it to.

I wish you the best in your didgeridoo endeavors, and hope these notes help you in your artistic journey forward. – Cat

So, would anyone be interested in a didgeridoo gathering near Las Vegas sometime around April or early May of 2008?

It would be held in the magnificent Valley of Fire State Park, about 45 minutes north of Las Vegas. The weather is great that time of year. Information about the park can be found here:

http://parks.nv.gov/vf.htm

For those who don’t enjoy a somewhat primitive camping experience (there are toilets and water, but no showers) there are plenty of reasonable hotels in Las Vegas – and it’s an easy drive. There are also no food vendors at the park, but I’m open to ideas on that.

Perhaps we could incorporate a “Do Las Vegas” evening for those who enjoy such things. Maybe get a group rate on a Cirque du Soleil show.

This is just in the “talking about talking about it” phase, so no promises – but I’d be interested in facilitating such an event close to my home.

Ideas?

Thanks SO much to everyone who participated! And a super special thanks to Per & Eileen, we love you! G&T

1st e-mail:

As a first time visitor to JTFest I wanted to thank you. What an amazing and uplifting experience for myself and my family!

Always wary of touted "family fun" claims in a world full of selfish intent and bad influences, I was so pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness both physically and spiritually of all I observed.

Along with that, the wordless wonder I felt when the grace and loveliness of the music embraced me. Haunting and yet familiar to my soul, it entwined around me like a home I never knew I was missing.

Thank you for such a well run event. thank you for giving our community the opportunity for artistic and personal growth
thank you to all those talented people who shared the most personal parts of themselves in the music they created.

Looking forward to the next time. I will be bringing ALL my family to this one.

warmest regards

2nd e-mail:

Greetings...

‘Tis Monday night and we just keep thinking about the great Didgefest at North Fork!! What a great weekend it was!!

We are your neighbors there, on Recreation Rd, and had the best time ever! Husband, Ron, is, at this very moment, trying to make his lips “flutter”, and send the vibes down his new didgeridoo. He took a workshop from David Blonski, I walked around, or bounced around, to the music of the jamin’ scenes at the park.

We loved the concerts!!! Jeremy Donovon is fantastic, as is Ondrij (?). The Wicked Tinkers were just too much fun! It was a privilege to experience all this in our “own back yard”.

At least as exciting as the music was the fact that there was no alcohol, no drugs. The aroma of incense floating around during the concert added to the star-filled, wonderful concerts!

Thank you! You’ve done an outstanding dijob! :)

Ron and Pat, grateful North Forkians!

Yeah, I know this is a little early to discuss the 2008 Didgefest :-) But what better time to think of the next one, then while we're there for this 2007 one.

2005 and 2006 were both 4 day festivals. Looking back at the history of the JT Didgefest website on archive.org, I see the 2003 fest (at Joshua Tree) was actually 7 days!

This year is only 3 days. Yeah, I know Gram and Trish are the ones to commit to how many days it will be. Just thinking I'd hate to see it go to only two days. Back to four days would be great.

Hey all you JT attendees.......the JT music encounter is scheduled for Friday at 6pm. The first piece will be done in the key of C in a kind of ambient/freeform style with probably little or no percussion. The second piece will be in the key of E and likely lots of percussion. Anyone who is interested in adding their musical or percussive touch will be invited in some organized fashion (if that's possible) to participate. there will be a core group of musicians/players to start and hopefully hold things together. In order to better facilitate a meaningful progression it would be helpful to have those wishing to participate let us know what instrument they would like to play. I'm sure there will also be some sort of sign-up at the fest as well. So lets hear from you asap please.

Cheers,
