Re: "Obama and the Palin Effect" by Deepak Chopra
Tue, September 16, 2008 - 1:02 PMthanks for sharing..
very illuminating view of current electoral politics.
The right keeps surprising me in their ideology of fear.
The right has done such a catastrophe with their free market fantasies and militarism, that there is no positive message from within..
their best ideas to remain in power is to keep their people from thinking.. thusly pushing hard on their fears..hooking into their worse emotions because they react so reliably this way.

Fri, September 19, 2008 - 9:00 PMYes, I read this article a while back, and it provoked some intuition I had, being progressive and working many years in a group of right-wing folks. They were also Christian fundamentalists in this case.
Chopra, I think, is right about them acting out the collective shadow, in the Jungian sense. Its like progressives are the good brother/sister in the family, who gets the straight-A's, does all their homework, and cares too much for others, and the right-wingers are the rebels who don't want to be bothered with thinking, expanding knowledge and being considerate.
They just want to emote and react, anchoring themselves in some fundamentalist position that is over-simplified and set in stone, and that they don't have to think about. And the more outrageous they can be the more "fun it is for everybody" - they love a spectacle like Sarah Palin, because it punctures what they believe is the sanctimonious balloon of the egg-headed elitists.
And that is the shadow, their feeling of inferiority I suspect.
But we have to recognize our shadow also. We have look at our capacity for humor, cleverness, and sanguine or dark maneuvering. It is in our shadow, and we are certainly capable of being less than holy...
