As I'm sure most of you know, Jo and I are joined at the hip. We started teaching recently and work as a team together. We thought it would be a nice idea to teach each of our classes a different choreography and then get them to dance for each other...and so the first ever hafla was conceived. We panicked that no-one would want to come to our party, as the week before the event we had only sold 30 tickets. Turns out on Saturday night we had 150 people there and by the time we finished paying for the venue/food etc, we had a clear £600 to donate to Action Cancer. We kicked the night off with a comedy stick duet so that our girls would feel at ease...false moustaches acting as armpit hair poking out of my lovely dress :-)
What really made the night was a chap Joanna works with brought all his Lebanese friends with him, families and all. A couple of the guys were musicians and as luck would have it they had their instruments in the car so we had authentic LIVE music...the place was rocking!! I'm not sure how we are going to top that one but we are going to give it a try ;-)
I don't what I ever did with my time before I started dancing all of two years ago.....and I don't know what I would do without my "wife" Jo. Life is good! I am now in collapse mode now the adrenalin of organising and performing has subsided.

Re: First ever hafla under our belt
Thu, November 8, 2007 - 6:24 AMWow - it sounds to me (with impromptu musicians showing up) that yours was as close to a true hafla as I've heard of in recent times - not sure about the moustaches though I would have loved to have seen it - but hey, maybe they mimicked authenticity too! Any photos?
I'm glad it went well for you and hope that you'll feel further inspired in the future - as for ideas for the next one - I'm sure something will come up given the amount of activity that goes on in your and your wife's head! Well done raising so much for Action Cancer.
Did anyone from your classes perform and if so, how did they feel afterwards?
Meanwhile I see that Deely has had her certificate (though she, like I am going to have to, had to pay postage).
Any news your side of the water? x

Re: First ever hafla under our belt
Thu, November 8, 2007 - 6:31 AMI should also say that we are planning our 11th Hafla in Penrith for January 2008 - though for most of us it is our first time being involved with the planning and yes, it is pretty hair raising hoping that the punters will go for it. NADA sponsors this event for us which is a weight off.
In recent times there has been the added bonus of providing workshops during the day and this year we'll have a streetwise sha'abi choreo session followed by a session on melaya lef, which we're hoping will prove popular for those who maybe prefer to travel to us for more than just the evening "do".
Last year we had reknowned musician Hassan Erraji holding a drumming workshop which drew attendance from outside the b.d. community and alongside it Shirley Lewis led an African Styles workshop. They were a huge success and then Hassan Erraji played kanoun (amongst other instruments) at the hafla in the evening.
What do other people do about the live musician question? This year we're going with a local dj who we have used before.
The date of our hafla by the way (& the workshops) is Saturday 26th January 2008 - just in case anyone fancies travelling to us for it - you would be more than welcome. I'll post more details when they are confirmed - should be soon now as we want to start selling tickets asap.
