IMPROV TRIBAL BELLY DANCE I and II
Experimental Movement Concepts (Baltimore, MD)
Mondays: June 16, 2008- August 11, 2008

Improv Tribal Belly Dance is a series of moves that are woven together through hand and verbal cues. In this sense, it becomes a universal dance form wherein anyone who learns the moves and their cues can dance together in an improvisational lead and follow fashion. It's a very liberating, proud and joyful dance form that celebrates women in all of their shapes, sizes, colors and emphasizes spontaneity, interaction and a fusion of both individual and group dynamics. Class will focus on American Tribal Style moves as well as other fusion and tribal choreographies that draw from various forms of dance, including Cabaret, African, Indian, Middle Eastern and Greek. Note: This is not an ATS only class. Improv Tribal Bellydance mixes ATS movements with various Improv Tribal Combos not created by Carolena Nericcio and Fatchance Bellydance.

Level I: 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. This is a progressive ten week class which will focus on solidifying the fundamentals of improv tribal bellydance. By the end of this ten week course, students will have a firm grasp of basic improv tribal bellydance movements and will be able to follow and dance in formation.

Level II: 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. This class is targeted towards individuals with one year + of improv tribal bellydance experience and is by invitation/approval of Lyra only. Improv Tribal Bellydance II focuses on expanding upon basic movments and adding traveling/turn steps and exploring leading/following and formations. Students in this class are expected to have mastered the basic movements and are required to lead and follow in all classes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please come in form fitting clothes that ensure easy movement and comfort. NO COIN SCARVES OR DISTRACTING ACCESSORIES ALLOWED. Please be kind and respect the right of your fellow students to learn in non-distracting environment. Shawls and hip wraps are fine, as long as I can still easily see your muscles/hip movements.

Class Rate: $17/drop-in rate or $140/10 week session in advance.

If for any reason you are wondering which class you should take, please contact me via tribe or email me at lyra at kallistitribal DOT com and give me a resume of past classes you've taken and previous dance experience. You may also contact me at the above email to set up a private or group evaluation for class placement. Please take care to consider which class would best benefit your skill level. I reserve the right to take students who are not ready for Improv Tribal II and place them into Improv Tribal I at my own discretion.
You might see this letter cross-posted all over the place. I wish to reach the widest community possible and your understanding is appreciated. Should you know someone who might benefit from this information, please pass it along.

I apologize that it has been a while since I last wrote. This past BIRDS festival was a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who participated in making it a most memorable event.

There are some fantastic pictures posted on-line for all to see. These pictures are from the two evening concerts and have been provided by Eric Willison, President of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella (www.millvalleyarts.org); click on the BIRDS link under the Latest News banner. We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen has informed me that he wishes to step down as president of the board, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

Get ready for a new ten week set of classes with Lyra of Kallisti Tribal!

Saturday Jan. 5- March 8, 2008
$15/class for drop-in, $12/class if you register for the full 10 week session
location TBA ( FInalizing location in Baltimore, MD... just wanted to give a head's up on this class).

The class will focus on some American Tribal Style moves as well as other fusion and tribal choreographies that draw from various forms of dance, including Cabaret, African, Indian, Middle Eastern and Greek. NOTE: This class is not an ATS only class! This class meshes some ats movements with other improvisational tribal combos.

11am-12pm: Improv Tribal I

This class is focused towards students who are new to Improv Tribal Bellydance or need to work on solidifying the basic movements before moving on to Improv Tribal II. Class will focus on posture, basic slow and fast movements and formation. Emphasis will be placed on learning the stylistic differences that are characteristic of tribal bellydance- carriage of the body, arm movements, floreos, hip work, etc. By the end of this class, students should be comfortable following a leader in formation through these basic movements and can even try out leading themselves.

12pm-1pm: Improv Tribal II

This class is tailored for students with at least one year of Improv Tribal Bellydance instruction who are comfortable with basic posture, formation and lead/follow format. Improv Tribal II will be a more intense class in which we will be focusing on the finer technique of basic improv tribal movements, as well as the lead/follow/chorus format. Students are required to attempt to lead movements in each class, as this is an intermediate-begginer class. In order to join this class you must be proficient in the following:

-tribal posture
-floreos
-tribal arm placement
-basic egyptian w/half turn
-turkish/turkish shimmy
-undulations
-3/4 shimmy
-arabic
-snake arms
-taxim

By the end of this session, students should be able to fully understand the lead/follow/chorus dynamic, as well as have a much more solid grasp of the basic tribal movements and transitioning between them in a dance setting. This class will also focus on incorporating these movements to music and each class will end with a short free dance period.

NOTE: In order to keep classes economic for everybody, each class has a 5 student minimum that must be pre-registered two weeks before the class or classes will be cancelled. Each class will be limited to ten students maximum in order to ensure that every students gets personal attention. Please contact me at lyra AT kallistitribal DOT com for pre-registration information. If classes are cancelled, any students pre-registered for classes will receive or a full refund OR can apply their payment towards private lessons.

Thanks and I hope to see you all in class!

We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

Thursday evening, I need help decorating the main stage, inside St John’s – Clark Room.

For Friday, we need help with selling tickets and security. We might, also need help selling bottled water and other beverages.

Saturday, will also need people to sell tickets and handle basic security tasks. In addition, we will need people to help with the outdoor festival stage, assisting groups with transitioning on and off stage, supporting the MC & Host of the Street Festival stage, Stu Needel etc. Further, the World Rhythm Drum Circus will be set-up and in full swing. This is a veritable percussionist’s playground that is completely kids safe: percussion instruments from all over the world and several junk yards. We will need fellow drummers to help supervise this wonderful activity.

There you have it. This call for help covers much of what we need to make this event really work as smoothly as possible. That said, there is only one thing that I can think of that we need more than anything else, and that is for you to attend and bring all of your friends with you. With out the community, the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival would be nothing more than a nice idea, waiting for someone to show up.

Make a difference and contribute to BIRDS future. You can make a tax-deductible contribution to the Baltimore International Rhythm & Drumming Society on-line at: www.drumtogether.net or during the festival. Your financial support will help BIRDS be able to create unique drumming and educational opportunities for youth and adults. It truly does take a village.
The Hafla will be free to all (byob and bring food stuffs) and will be segmented into two portions- the performance portion and free dance. If you're interested in performing, we will have 10 5-10 minute slots available. Feel free to contact me brooke AT kallistitribal DOT com.

So I've been running Undulations, selling belly dance clothing and the like, for a year or so, and slowly the belly dance has taken over an entire closet in my house. In the meantime, my darling boyfriend has become my darling fiance, is moving in, and wants to change the belly dance closet into a sports gear closet. Needless to say, some stuff has got to go.

I've sold things to Brooke a few times, so se can give you an idea of what kind of things I carry. Basically right now I just have lots and lots of jewelry and a few skirts, etc. I really just want to make some room in my house, and am in a "make me an offer" frame of mind, so things are going cheap.

Anyway, you all can contact me through Tribe if you all are interested some new belly dance toys. I'd be willing to head up to Baltimore for one of your practices, too, if that would be an easy way to me to show you what I got! : ) Thanks everyone!

INTRO TO IMPROV TRIBAL BELLY DANCE at
The Promenade Dance Sport Facility
Sunday April 8 - June 2nd, 1-2pm

The class will be geared towards people who have had at least one session of belly dance in the past (experience with basic moves like shimmies, body rolls, snake arms, etc.), though I can also offer "prep sessions" at my house for those interested who need to learn the basics.

The class will focus on American Tribal Style moves as well as other fusion and tribal choreographies that draw from various forms of dance, including Cabaret, African, Indian, Middle Eastern and Greek.

Each class will include a movement-focused warm up, drills/new elements portion and a free dance period in which the improv movements are solidified in a lead/follow to music. My goal is that everyone will know and feel confident in dancing with basic moves in an improv tribal belly dance format by the end of this class.

Class size will be limited to 15 students to ensure personal attention. Students are encouraged to sign up for the 8 week session in advance to ensure a space in the class.

Class Rate: $12/drop-in rate or $80/8 week session in advance.

If you have any questions at all about the class structure or need any more information, or want to pre-register via Paypal, feel free to email me brooke AT kallistitribal DOT com or message me through Tribe.

Then Andy called and said he and Karen wanted to have a hafla Thanksgiving weekend and how about myhouse? OOH.... could these ideas be combined? Work off the turkey (or tofurkey) Saturday after Thanksgiving? Maybe we could even offer a workshop earlier and then make it a hafla swap meet extravaganza.....
and I want to show you these cool arm thingies that Kajira showed me and I'm making now.... I think, in my drugged up state, that I would offer them to you free because you are so cool, if you will come to my party. Would you like to teach something as atroupe? Like let everyone be part of your coolness for a day, and charge them money for it? If you haven't seen my bigger space lately, come by and visit me!
I'll actually be out of town this weekend at a funeral, but back Tuesday. And Toya- do you work a dayjob? I really want to get our baby girls together to dance- i'm doing a home class Friday the 22nd 10am for kids and adults- want to come?

The end of May was a time of slack training and missed classes. It's going to be hard to keep it up over the summer when it is H-O-T!

May 30th: class at Aura. I think I'm going to use any leftover classes on yoga or pilates, and not go Tuesdays for awhile. The class is good, just not tribal at all, so I'd rather focus on other things.

June 1st: Piper's class kicked my butt! My calves and quads are a mess, so tight and weak. Piper mentioned that in Level 2 you do a lot on your toes, so I need to start practicing that in case she ever gets the Level 2 going.

June 2nd: back to the gym tomorrow!

Amy mentioned this idea last night and I think it's a great one- we should divide our moves between us, so that we each have responsibilities to "master" specific moves and be the end-all-be-all as far as timing, posture, hands, turning, etc. goes... that way we don't have as many time-munching debates over just how we do each move.

so, here's the list, please respond and claim a move or two (and feel free to add ones I'm missing):

CUED MOVES
Hip to be Square (Lisa Move from Cue sheet)
Move: Step forward with your right foot, back on your left (similar to Turkish), back on your right and then do a ¾ shimmy with the left foot and turn ¼. Continue to each side.
Arms: Taffy arms at chest height – right arm forward with right left, left arms forward when right leg goes to the back.
Cue: Taffy arms to side for 5,6,7,8
Can be done on the left and the right.
