anybody? thoughts?
vertumnus posted an email to the alberta burn list proposing that we unite in one playa area so as to party better together, do more art together, and generally rock out more.
i feel like i'm part of burning groups in toronto, calgary/edmonton, & victoria...... i know i'm not the only one. i think it would be great.
would the ontario or BC groups object to being assimilated into the kanuckistan thing? would it bring us together but in a bad way??? hmmm. are there other provincials with identities that i don't know about?

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Sun, October 9, 2005 - 12:04 PMI think it's a great idea! We all have strengths to complement each other. And can you imagine how (in)famous our village would be? We Canucks have quite the reputation on-playa! I'm going to contact the other Canadian regionals and see what they have to say... Would be a ton of fun.
I think Kanuckistan and other camps may have become accustomed to their locations and some may be set in their ways... but improvement tends to win over tradition amongst us, I think. -

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Sun, October 9, 2005 - 10:45 PMWe can find ways of strengthening the ties without necessarily becoming one big camp if people want. So many possibilities!

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Tue, October 11, 2005 - 1:18 AMThe Toronto groups (which I am part of... camp at C4 - Crazy Canadian Comic Cats)... for the most part, think this would rock.
Much discussion ensued on giving the Yanks some taste of Canadian life (and I wasn't think the Great Canadian Beaver Eating Contest... they can taste all they want there)....
So discussion centered around...
1) Erecting a big, bad barbed wire fence.
2) having a complex immigration form process... many desks to get everything stamped... takes ohh... as long as we can ...
3) Burn all the documents.
Mindless government oversight...
I would love to hang with my fellow crazy canadians...
Our reputation DOES proceed us... (a little bit... maybe?). -

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Tue, October 11, 2005 - 9:10 AMAs a cross-Kanuck burner with lots of connections throughout our fair country, I think the idea of it is pretty cool. I would say:
- Faux barbwire only, you animals... but the effect is about right. Are there more culturally appropriate boundaries? Stacked cans of Canadian? A snow fence seems about right to me
- I like the idea of this being a whole bunch of little camps with a lot of autonomy, gigsville styles. Everything voluntary, including signing up.
- I like the idea of a little more Kanuck identity, including passports, immigration, etc. Sounds like the BRC post office style of coustemer service, which is great.
Would this become one grand Kanuckistan? Would we keep Freely United Cartel of Kanuckistan slightly seperate?
I check in with the Montreal Bruellers, and see what's going on. -

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Wed, October 12, 2005 - 12:59 PMI'm Montreal Bruleur Ed. I camped with C4 this year, my first on the playa.
I'm also known as Serious Ed cuz I like to think deep thoughts and be serious about everything
So when presented with the Kanada Village concept my first instinct is to 'problematize' it and ask the tough questions. So here goes:
Q: I'm already surrounded by Canadians during the other 51 weeks of the year. Why seek to maintain this during the one week of BM magic?
Q: Why emphasize geography and national identity on the playa? Isn't there enough of that in the default world?
Q: Why not be like mmmike in Ottawa or 'wire in Montreal and join a theme camp that expresses something of your inner you-ness rather than your outer where-ness?
No to totally poo-poo the idea. I can see that it has a good momentum behind it and it seems like a natural next step. But the future Ministy of Propaganda should at least be able to reply to the above 3. -

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Wed, October 12, 2005 - 2:12 PMOne thing I've really enjoyed about camping with fellow Albertans the two years I've gone to the burn is that the relationships you form on the playa are no longer transitory, they can last throughout the year. Its great to see the same people at the decompression, and at the pub and in my living room as I saw on the playa. I think it helps extend the spirit of the burn throughout the year.
I agree with all of your points though, there are 30K amazing people out there, why be all cliquish and just hang out with kids from your class?

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Wed, October 12, 2005 - 3:23 PMre: the emphasis on national identity.
remember the name:
freely
united
cartel of
kanuckistan
um, one thought i have is that the this is not actually representing canada. i think it can be a forum/playground/stage where we can make fun of ourselves and in fact re-create or originate some kind of "national" identity (a leftist one based on the Karl thing??).
for example, it has been discussed to have our presence on playa be the actual Embassy from the freely united cartel of kanuckistan.... what do we want to point out about ourselves as kanuckistani peoples?
we could welcome anyone to the f.u.c.k., by the way, not just canadian citizens. it could be some kind of ideal canada where all immigrants are accepted in & handed a Molson.
secondarily, i agree with kay. what with C4 and the f.u.c.k. growing and becoming a lot like real theme camps... as well as the groups from other provinces etc. that i don't know, it seems that we are getting to know each other as an even bigger group, a cross national community. having some kind of village would enable us to connect with each other more, and to help others more, like The Lost Canadian. we could welcome new burners to the village and thereby help them burn harder and brighter.
meh. thanks for all the comments, let's get more kanucki burners on here. -

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Wed, October 12, 2005 - 11:48 PMO.K., I think I'm on middle ground about the Kanuckistan thing. Since there are lots of Kanucks I know and love, I think it'd be great to reduce the travel time between camps. I don't even know who I'll camp with this next year, since I just moved across the country.
I think something super inclusive would be great. I know we've got a few Yankee neighbours and friends who would love to join, as well as maintaining friendly relationships across borders.
Or just spend more time away from camp?
Oh, and we really need a thread explaining the story of the Lost Canadian. Anybody hear from the guy again? -

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Wed, October 19, 2005 - 1:57 PMI think Serious Ed raises some questions....
1) We would NOT eliminate the nature of any individual camps.. if we link up several camps together, It just becomes a village... which allows us more space to do stuff jointly.
... Crazy Canadian Cosmic Cats would NOT disappear, it would be far easier to get to each other...
2) The Canadian Party will be WAY WAY too much fun.
3) We Kanucks on the Playa tend to be loud and proud about our country (sorta like backpacking through Europe?)... so why not make a village.
4) I would see doing a few common infrastructure items (entrance gate, with some wooden slats snow fence (not the plastic stuff... they call that construction fence in US)... Maybe a Big Canadian Flag...
But NOT that many common infrastructure... more just some common events/parties/etc.
This is not about changing camps... or doing huge joint projects (but doing a huge snow/burning/man would be fun?)... just locating existing camps closer...
For those that want to.
(We can have our own little oasis of Peace, Order and Good Governence... then go out to the wild world they call the playa).

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Wed, November 2, 2005 - 7:09 AMI'm now a Kanuckistan Village supporter. Not because I care about increasing the Canadian profile on the playa but beacuse I think that increasing the links among us Brûleurs du Canada is in itself a good thing. Through regional events, the big festival and online I've experienced how Burning Man is a powerful way for people to make strong long-term connections that transcend geographic limits. (I've already added North to my tribe.net friends list because of this discussion).
So to me Kanuckistan is the next logical step for us to get to know each other, share resources, co-ordinate and re-define Kanadianicity.
À l'avance! -

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Mon, March 20, 2006 - 11:34 AMI'm a virgin burner.. was making big plans to go this year, then ugly circumstances forced me to quit my job, BUT things are going alright financially, AND I had an amazingly powerful dream about Burning Man the other night, SO... I think I'm really going to try to go this year.
I would love to have a Kanuckistan village to camp in, as a comfortable Home Base to ground my adventures and roamings out on the Playa. I would love to stamp people's passports/bodies/whatever with an image of ourselves, and to offer short workshops in how to use "eh" properly in a sentence. I would love to make connections with people across the country that I can reconnect with during my travels in this great land, along with connecting with people from elsewhere who will come visit me in this great land, too.
So... what next? Is there another active discussion forum somewhere I should join? Are we all in First Day of Spring mode, where sunshine and mild weather are more exciting than planning for desert antics? Could a non-newbie take us in hand and guide us in this process?

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Tue, March 21, 2006 - 5:12 PMhehehe spring indeed we are on the downhill slope baby!!
where are you in canada now? connect with your local burners.... if you're in ontario, i suggest you get on the ontario burners email list. check it at their website: www.burnon.ca
it's a google group so you can get digests - there is a lot of chatter on the list but important planning meetings are announced there.
i've sort of put burning man plans on hold for now - don't know how to make a kanuckistan village happen, myself. the whole village idea is cool, i hope is gains momentum.

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Tue, March 21, 2006 - 9:42 PMWell I've got a couple of confirmed (ticket in hand) virgins coming with me this year along with another veteran or two. We're looking at bringing a mutant RV down and errecting a 30-40ft tower with something shiny on top so we can find our way back to camp.
After DeKomp in Calgary last week I'm ridiculously excited about the Burn.
As a travel industry employee I volunteer my services as abassador between the various cities, provided I can sleep on your couch. ;) -

Re: so what about a kanuckistan village?
Tue, March 21, 2006 - 9:49 PMI'm in Vancouver.. and prob unable to make it out to the local Recompression event next month due to a work conflict, siiiigh. I'm already signed up on the BurningVan tribes and such.. they're just pretty quiet right now!
Ah well.. I've tapped into a local firespinner, hopefully she can help me find some connection opportunities :)
