MAKE YOUR OWN PEE FUNNEL

More glory for the Ladies' Playa Hygeine department. (By the way, y'all fellas who get bothered by this kind of talk always make me smile, knowing you're destined for reincarnation as a woman next time 'round.)

Zoe writes: "No more Pee Funnel Camp, or how to make your own PFC pee funnel:

After four years of glory the members of Pee Funnel Camp have chosen to move on to other projects. We'd like to thank all of our loyal customers for the last four years of putting the fun in pee funnel. We'll be back on the playa under a different name and purpose this year, but there are other options for ladies that enjoy peeing easy in the potties:

1. Learn stand 'n' pee - women don't need any (wo)manmade devices to pee while standing, there are plenty of websites that will teach you how. Practice makes perfect.

2. There are also many brands (1 was printed here in the resources issue) of commercial pee funnels that work and run from $15.00-$30.00.

3. How to make your own Pee Funnel Camp pee funnel or Zoe's Secret Recipe:

Materials: 1 9 oz. or larger plastic cup (sturdy but flexible polyethylene works best), 8 inches 7/16" vinyl tubing, 3/8" metal bolt, silicone glue (get the kind that's rated best for plastics), gas stove or blowtorch, wrench.

Use the wrench to hold the bolt while you heat it over the blowtorch or gas stove. Melt a hole in the bottom of the cup. Carefully squeeze the tube through the hole (should fit very snug, not too pinched or the cup will crack, but it should hold itself, the glue is just for backup). Coat both sides of the hole with generous amounts of silicone glue. Let dry 24 hours.

I've had these last a day, I've had them last three years, it's all in how much glue and how carefully you make it and how much you respect the seal while using it. They're not environmentally friendly in any way, but they are as easy to use as the professional models, and much cheaper. Stand Free and Pee!"

Here's a link from the burning man tribe here on tribe.net, it's about depression on the playa, people have some good things to say:
http://losangeles.tribe.net/thread/e0cd1b94-b712-44fb-b39a-5ba6a3802094?tribeid=2a015c8a-8c2f-4657-8716-9395874aa780&r=10025

----------------------
article from many months ago

This is for the Burning Man people here. From what I've gathered, a large group of artists and others are upset at the lack of art and more specifially, art funding from the Burning Man organization, especially after 2004. I haven't read through their entire proposal yet but from what I've gathered, they're fed up. Basically they've pledged themselves and are asking others to change the dynamic of Burning Man back to the art-centric event it was founded on. Because without the art, they believe Burning Man will ultimately fail. What do you guys think?

QUOTE
We want to make the art of Burning Man spectacular again and we are stepping forward to do the work to make it happen. We are recommiting ourselves to the creation of mind-blowing, I-can't-believe-someone-actually-made-that, KNOCK YOU ON YOUR ASS ART in all forms, mediums, shapes and sizes for the playa this year. Towards this end, our plan is to run an "art event within the event" at Burning Man 2005, using the MASSIVELY COLLABORATIVE and RADICALLY DEMOCRATIC methods laid out in the We Have a Dream Petition.
We also come together to reaffirm the primacy of ART as our core vehicle towards COMMUNITY at Burning Man. What we had before, and what we want to move forward with again, are the deep and meaningful ties formed in the crucible of WILDLY COLLABORATIVE ART-MAKING, in the harshest of conditions, challenged constantly by our inexperience, inability and lack of resources, but ultimately realized by the people that join together to make it happen anyway.

We invite EVERYONE to join us for this reaffirmation of the soul and sacred center of Burning Man. We welcome bitter old farts long since departed, newbies who just arrived, angry machine artists, rednecks, ravers, punks, hippies, yahoos, snooty art school trustafarians, diesel mechanics, and disgruntled youth of all types to join us. We will exclude no person who wants to do the work. But we will actively exclude the vapid ideas of insta-community, mindless partying and other bad bullshit that has so soiled this grand experiment in ART-BASED community.

I compiled a list of things that people wrote on the burning man tribe that was far a newbie burner. There was enough good stuff to seriously consider, and it is pasted below:

Buy Baby Whipes in the cylindrical bottles, unscrew the top, poor our some of the liquid, refill with vinegar, whipe feet at least 2 times a day. Vinegar counteracts the alkylinity of the playa dust. Feel free to use on face, hands, or any other body parts.

Slippers. Sooooo important for those 6am I'm in my tent and I need to pee moments.

Spray bottle. Not only great for spraying your head, arms and chest to cool off in the middle of the day, but by mid week, you'll want to spray some mist into your nostrals and loosen up the "nose taters" or masonry formerly known as boogers have anchored.

----

lip balm with sunscreen (yes your lips can get sunburned)
saline solution for your nose (it can get dry dry dry, i've gotten bloody noses every year, even with the saline)
any medications you might need
and extra tp because sometimes the potties run out

---------

it's gonna be dark out there this year... bring LIGHTS, blinky things, for your body and bike....

and vinegar, to wash your feet, and a good thick lotion to treat those feet after you have tread upon them all day.... and then bathed them in vinegar.... it will make your first time on the playa a bit more comfortable......
----
FYI Babywipes do come UNSCENTED!!!

They also come lavender scented
----
I really like to bring essential oils (just a tiny amount goes a long way) to add to my water in my spray bottles - a drop or two of peppermint oil in a litre of water makes it sooo much more refreshing.
-------

Extra goggles. Seriously. Sme clear lensed goggles for night time and some tinted for day. Extra headlamp. Extra batteries.

I also stick some sekret extra snackies in a handy place for the five o clock in the morning munchies. Just having a box of white cheddar cheesits on hand after bouncing about the playa all night and a juice box saved my life a time or two.

-----------

It's great having a Camel Bak-type water hydration system so you can carry your water around on your back. Get the largest reservoir you can find. Serach on-line for best deals. Camel Bak makes military and industrial models that hold large amounts. You can also make fashionable covers for your CamelBak to match your outfits. I do.

And I'm definitely talking Baby Whips this year.

-*-------------
(*((EXTRA BLADDER FOR CAMEL PACK??))
My pleasure. It's also fun to mix up a night's worth of alcoholic drinks and fill up the Camelbak with that. Great to share with others, too, since they have to get pretty close to take a sip ;-)

*-------------

Bring EmergenC packets instead of Gatoraid. It has tons of electrolytes and trace minerals without all that sugar.

-------------
Along those lines an inverter to plug into your lighter for small lights, appliances and recharging ( you may have to run your engine for a few hours during you stay if you use it heavily)

My favorite playa food are ww.tastybite.com (I am NOT affiliated with this company. )

-------
one trick i use is to wet washcloths and put it in a ziplock baggie. usually about 10-15 of them. then pop them in the freezer. when you leave for the burn, put them in your ice chest you will be using to keep frozen things frozen. at 3 in the afternoon, under the blazing sun, one of those ice cold washcloths feals wonderful on your face....

----------
Someone posted somewhere a great reccomendation. Pack 1 "plain clothes" outfit (including socks and underwear) in a ziplock baggie. Have it handy when you are about to leave the playa. Change into them just before pulling away. Nothing like a set of clean clothes for that long drive down 447.

Though personally I like being completely covered in dust as I saunter into the buffet at Boomtown... I almost can hear the theme to "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" playing...
------------

vice grips, full-size can't tell you how much frustration you will avoid pulling stakes and rebar by using a pair of vice grips and spinning the stake each way before you pull

small tent (garage) for storage, keeps you from dragging playa in and out of your sleeping area all day if you have it.

cover your air mattress, bag etc with cheap painters plasting during the day, easy to pull it out and shake off dust that WILL accumulate on your sleeping surface

------

http://www.majorsurplusnsurvival.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=027191&Category_Code=65

---------

Super glue. The heat of the day will destroy a lot of commercial glues. I had to reglue the foam seals on my goggles last year and my friend had to reglue the sole on one of their shoes.

Twine is good too, things break and need to be tied back together. I bought a new tiny tent for BM (I was flying and need a smaller one) and the clip that attaches to the pole and holds the already low ceiling up snapped when I was setting it up.

Extra socks. At least two pairs per day, three is better.

If you smoke bring extra lighters, I somehow managed not lose any last year. I still find it unbelievable and am going to submit is as my first miracle towards sainthood.

All manner of dry-skin treatments and lots of it, especially lip balm/chapstick. Use it on your nose around the nostrils and even a bit inside if you a prone to nose bleeds. Heat, 0% humidity and higher altitudes make them a lot more common.

Clothes - During the day loose knit light fabrics are best. Since there is no humidity the heat is not as oppressive as many other areas (although you'll dehydrate quicker) and allowing your sweat to evaporate instantly helps a lot to keep you cool. At night have layers. Sometimes a sweatshirt alone will keep you plenty warm when your moving around or out of the wind, but when a 40 mph gust hits you it cuts you to the bone if it can get through your clothes.

A CUP (with lid). Many camps offer drinks but they don't have a lot of cups and that means more trash so bring one with you. Coffee travel mugs work great. They are insulated, have a tight lid and if you can find one with a handle so you can tie it to a belt loop or your bike it's even better.

Multiple sets of eating utensils. I bought one of the little camping knife/spoon/fork sets and it was lost the first day so I had to beg some plasticware off of someone and be viligant in putting it away. I was more careful with those then I was with my emergency cash and ID. They apparently make biodegradeable 'plasticware.' Not sure what it is made of and it's works okay, but I had a problem with it getting soft and losing shape when I'd eat hot foods like soups. I'd have to put it in hot water, bend everything back into the right position then let it cool each time I ate.

There are a whole bunch of other things, but keep reading and take notes and you'll be fine. Last year was my first and I spent a lot of my time researching since I didn't know many burners. The only thing I wish I had had was my coat and hooded sweatshirt that I accidently left laying on my bed, an more eating utensils.

-----------
If you smoke cigarettes, take an extra pack or two and keep it hidden until the end of the week. Trust me you'll want them. Or quit smoking. I also took a little film cannister covered with stickers to put my butts in when i was done.
Work or rubber gloves for picking up moop at the end of the week. It's bad enough being burnt out at the end of the week and having to go wandering about for a few hours bending over to pick up a tiny scrap of toilet paper, or someone elses butt. Gloves will help prevent your hands from gettting to bad.
Also, HAND SANITIZER!! A blessing in disguise, these nifty lil' gems now come in rubber doodads to hang from your purse, belt, whatever!
Extra rubber grommet pieces for the mouthpiece of your waterpak. mine started leaking two days in and I was riding around leaking water all over for a day before I figured out that I could turn it around. And I put a piece of celllophane over the mouthpiece held on with a rubberband to keep the mouthpiece from getting all crusty

--------------

basic medical knowledge to recognize illness related to heat and remedy:

The 3 commonly identified types of illness resulting from exposure to the desert heat include:

Heat Cramps
Heat Exaustion
Heat Stroke

The symptoms, becoming progressively more serious, range from abdominal cramps and muscle spasms (Heat Cramps) to nausea, dizziness, headache, weakness, goose bumps, and cold, clammy skin (Heat Exaustion) to mental confusion or loss of consciousness with hot dry skin and no sweating (Heat Stroke). The categories may overlap. Heat Stroke can be fatal.

Get out of the sun, and out of the heat if possible.
Cool the person with water, not ice (which may cause shock).
Get medical advice ASAP

----------

Earplugs, and more than one pair. As many have said, things tend to grow legs and travel while on the playa. Earplugs are NEEDED as the City Rocks 24/7 and you MUST get sleep at soemtime. YEA Yea yea, "I can sleep anywhere". Lack of SOUND(less) sleeps makes for a REAL ASSHOLE of a campmate/self.

---------

And on the playafoot front, aside from frequent washing in vinegar/water (the acetic acid counteracts the alkyline playa dust), this mix was recommeded to me by the belove'd Zorg the Unhinged out in CA, and it works beautifully. Apparently playafoot isn't just drying. A major componenet of it is fungal, attacking the damaged skin.

Mix:

2 oz extra virgin olive oil (which has a high acid content, apparently)
4 drops tea tree essential oil
4 drops lavendar essential oil.

anoint your feet twice a day, after washing. Keeps em supple and crack free. Also takes care of athlete's foot and tinas curae (ringworm).

----------

Have no fear about your gear!

Remember to try and forget something!

Also bring extra stuff you don't need at all.

Someone else will!

It is a barter community.

So going on exchange hunts can be a great way to meet your neighbors, and having stuff to trade that people need is handy.

You are camping, and going through alot of effort to leave the "Real World" stresses behind.

Sometimes bringing EVERYTHING you want, gets in the way of experiencing what it is you actually NEED.

You'd be surprised at how little we really need when so many around us are so eager to share.

I'm not saying to be a Mooch, nobody likes a Mooch.

But what I am saying is:

People love being hosts. They spend SOOOO much time and energy building their camps and pimping them out. They want be people to come and enjoy them.

Your a first year burner.

You don't want to be in your own camp much at all.

Get out there and be the best damned guest you can be!

Enjoy what the veterans have made, and give them Hugs, Smiles, Laughs, and props!

You can come back next year and try to one up them if need be.

PS:

One small tip is don't buy those big 2 1/2 gallon containers with the taps for your water. Buy the smaller sturdier 1 gallon waters.
If one of those taps comes off (which they do so easily) you lose a lot of water and make a mess too.

------------

Some sort of extra shade for your tent is a big plus if you want to sleep during the day (you will). I made an extra fly out of heavy-duty "space blankets" (NOT the cheap thin kind), sewing it up to roughly the shape of the tent fly & grommeting the corners. Think about the 70 mph winds when you make anything!

A small rug to put in front of your tent defines a living space & collects bits of microtrash, and a camp chair feels much better to sit on than the playa surface. Roll it up at the end and shake it out OFF playa & remember you can't burn toxic things like carpets.

Bring less food than you think you need, nothing perishable and nothing that takes much prep. You will be fed and the desert makes you less hungry. Prep things in advance, remove packaging and potential litter. No glass bottles, minimize plastic. I like baking a big batch of granola bars and freezing servings of stew in ziplocs. I bring less every year and still have extra.

Use 5 gal collapsible water jugs, plastic bottles are nightmare trash. Bring a gallon bottle of water to drink first, then put a big "P" on it and keep it in your tent to pee in- use a funnel if female. You make 1 potty trip instead of 10- just don't let it sit in the sun too long. You can also monitor the color of your urine for hydration.

More socks but less clothes than you think you'll need. Bring 2 changes of street clothes- use 1 for dirty setup & cleanup and keep one clean to leave in.

Your playa wear doesn't have to be stunning your first time but it helps you get into the spirit of things if you don't look like you are at the mall. Have one casual set (sarongs, togas are great), one more elaborate day costume and a warm, lighted night costume. Put pockets on your duds to keep essentials (lipbalm, stash, condoms) and to pick up trash. Decorate a wide brimmed hat to keep your brain from boiling.

Do a few volunteer activities during the week- check out the Earth Guardians, Recycle Camp, the Artery, BRCPO, etc. Get involved and participate and you will have a great time!
