Okay, okay, I know that this has absolutely NOTHING to do with clothing, costumes, fashion, bellydance, nada.

But you know those spring/summer flies that get into your house and swarm around the middle of the room but never land on anything? We don't have those in North Carolina. In NC we have houseflies, but they land on stuff, and you can swat and kill them with a flyswatter.

How do you get rid of these annoying California buzzers?

Bio

This is my bio that is on Etsy (I still have to update it on my website). I particularly want to update the last paragraph. Any feedback?

>>My signature style combines love of color and graceful composition with unorthodox construction techniques. The result is a whimsical yet elegant gypsy aesthetic.

When I was four, I shredded Grandma's favorite skirt for a hula costume. 20 years later I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) of San Francisco with a degree in fashion design.

Previously I worked as Assistant Designer at Cari Borja (www.cariborja.com), as a patternmaker, cutter, and assistant at Azadeh Couture (www.azadehcouture.com), and as a stitcher at Teatro Zinzanni (www.teatrozinzanni.com).

My designs have been featured on the cover of Knitty magazine and on the bodies of Ultra Gypsy, a San Francisco fusion bellydance troupe, as well as several Bay Area brides.<<

Fabric:

Fabrix
http://www.fabrixsanfrancisco.com/
This is the absolute best bargain in the bay area, bar none.

Yarn:

Imagiknit
http://www.imagiknit.com/
San Francisco
I used to work there, and I LOVE the staff, especially Dee, Kurt, Jen, and Allison.
They have the largest and best selection of the bay area yarn stores, and their organization is easy to understand. They also have little cards in each bin with the price, yardage, fiber content, gauge, and price per yard.

Article Pract
http://www.articlepract.com/
Oakland
While limited, their selection is all quality, and I like the atmosphere of the store. It's where I go if I can't make it to Imagiknit.

Trim:

Britex
http://www.britexfabrics.com/
San Francisco
Expensive as all hell, but an what a selection!

Beads and Rhinestones:

General Bead
http://genbead.com/
You can't beat their upstairs deal--If you buy $20 of merchandise (maybe $30, I'm not quite sure) you get $50 worth of stuff.

Baubles and Beads
http://www.baublesandbeads.com/
Berkeley
They have a great selection, especially of Czech glass

My method for reinforcing an original Vionnet

I recently had the pleasure of repurposing an original Vionnet beaded dress into a panel skirt. Gold beads outlined the puffy flowers, which were accented by robin's egg blue embroidery and cylinder beads that looked like they were made out of white spun sugar. But the best part was the antelopes that were beaded on each of the front panel.

First I picked up some cheap wood framing legs from the art supply store--the kind that you buy to stretch your own canvases.
I bought some organza, which I then stretched over the frame, using a staple gun to attach it.

Then I laid the panels on the organza and used straight pins to keep it in place. I put a pin about every 6 inches.
Using long beading needles and silk thread, I sewed the panel to the organza by going through the beads. The original silk charmeuse was disintigrating, which is why the pieces needed to be mounted to something sturdier in the first place.

I probably put a stitch about every 1.5 inches.

After mounting the entire piece, I cut the organza with about 3 inches on each side of each edge. Then I folded the extra organza under, and used a catch stitch to secure it.

Although I didn't do it for this project, normally I would hide all my stitching by backing the entire thing with another piece of fabric.

Lemme know if you have any questions or suggestions about my method.

The myth of Arachne

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachne

Its why I picked the spider as my branding mark. Aside from being a tale about a weaver and spinner, its a warning against getting too big for your britches and against pissing off those who are in positions above you, even if your work is equal.

“Katherine Summer combines love of color and graceful composition with unorthodox construction techniques. The result is a whimsical yet elegant aesthetic for the modern day gypsy.”

I am seeking an intern with excellent sewing skills to assist with the development of a small fashion line. Fashion students who will receive school credit are preferred since this internship is unpaid.
