Ive discovered it again. Last project I used with it were some drapes. I also made a wedding dress from vintage linen last year. I would like to make a suit - but it would make a great ghawazee coat for you dancers! It wrinkles, but washes really nice. It frays, but thats what an overlock or even a zig-zag stitch are for. It is amazing fabric for warmer weather!

Re: Linen
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 8:52 AMMy beau was the recent recipient of the Lucky Boy Festival & Resort Collection, all in linen:
4 pairs of pants with cute back pockets & snap-secured flaps (these are pretty awesome snapsource.com/ )
4 matching wallets that slide onto his belt
4 matching hat bands
4 contrast pullover shirts with wide mandarin collar, shirttail hem, tab closure at neckline slit, & pintucks running front to back over 1 shoulder
I didn't use my serger, because nothing flat fells quite like linen :-)

Tue, July 14, 2009 - 5:13 PMI made a 10-yard skirt out of linen. I just LOVE wearing it, it's so soft and flowey... but heavy and dramatic at the same time...

Re: Linen
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 7:25 PMSorry...I just can't forget wearing a linen suit in August in NYC...I was such a mess of wrinkles and grime after about 3 hours, and the damn thing never got clean again. I love its look, but don't enjoy wearing it.

Re: Linen
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 10:35 PMI love linen. And I don't mind the wrinkles. Of course, I like a freshly ironed linen too, but I just think wrinkles goes along with the territory. It has its own worn and lived in appeal. I have two garment pieces of soft basket-weave linen and, silly me, I don't wear them very often for fear of ruining them! So much for that lived in appeal! ;D -

Tue, July 14, 2009 - 10:37 PMI also covet one of Carolena's linen skirts - a lovely long A-line in olive green. I found one similar at H&M, but its not the same quality and the dye faded pretty quick. Oh, if she ever gets rid of that one, I'm grabbing it!

Re: Linen
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 10:14 PMI love linen =)
I have a Norse persona for the SCA, and my undertunics are all linen. I wear two tunics, then my apron dress over the top. And no matter what the weather is, even with my WOOL apron dress (my favorite) I'm always comfortable, and dont get sunburns!!! (a big plus for my super fair skin).
Linen is my hero =) -

Re: Linen
Thu, July 16, 2009 - 4:21 AMThe trick to avoid the wrinkles is heaps of fabric softener in the final rinse. But be sure to dissolve it completely before adding garment, I found out the hard way and got oily patches. Helps keep your garment soft and relaxed, without the sharp creases. -

Re: Linen
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 12:32 PMI have several linen things, and tho they are very nice and pretty, I find linen to be very scratchy and itchy. I have some beautiful linen shirts that I use as summer jacets, but they poke and itch! and are uncomfortable! I dont mind ironing ( I find it to be relaxing) but the scratchiness is driving me crazy! Havent decided what to do with them yet. -

Re: Linen
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 3:58 PMI guess when I think of wearing linen, I think of jackets, skirts, pants, coats, and dresses. Not blouses and shirts so much. Ive seen and felt some really soft linen and I think it may have been treated somehow. And there are different weights of linen too.
I have some hemp fabric that is very linen like and it feels very scratchy. I also have some in a lighter weight that is mixed with silk and its very soft. So I guess the moral to this story is to get a linen blend? -

Re: Linen
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 8:26 AMThe shirts I made were a cotton/linen blend. Some were almost sheer - those were quite soft.
The Essex blends here are much more substantial (but definitely wearable against skin) and I think they will really soften significantly with washings. Great for tailoring, for sure: www.sewmamasew.com/ccp0-cat...INEN.html -

Wed, August 5, 2009 - 8:58 AMI'm thumbing swatches (& drooling) right now:
www.michaelsfabrics.com/
583715 & 374855 are particularly nice. (You can't see the woven, textured stripe on the off-white online but they are both exquisite).
I'm also getting some of the silk/cashmere tweeds - can't resist their bundle pricing on Zegna: Cottons & linens for $5, silks & woolens $8.50.
