Happy Belated Halloween! Happy Dia De Los Muertos!

I hope everyone is having a happy Hallowed Holiday around the world! I would have posted here sooner, but tribe has not been kind lately and I couldnt log on!

I didnt dress up as anything too complicated this year. We in the States, don costumes of all sorts and go out and make fools of ourselves. And for some of us its more of a spiritual thing. I just pulled something out of my closet. pinned it shut with saftey pins - because I had outgrown it. :(. went to my room mates art show and then had a few drinks down the street with friends. Simple and sane.

Tonight I'll do more dressing in black and face paint and go to the parade that winds through the mission district. That always feels more like Halloween to me anyway.

Some new ETSY Stuff.......and Updates

Ive got some new stuff up on Etsy and will be putting more larger sized skirts and pants up and soon as I get some orders out.

Sometimes people think that Im making things for Etsy instead of working on their orders. Well, the truth of the matter is ........I actually have to do both.

Every now and then, I take a day or two and just start cutting out fabric for new stuff - skirts, pantaloons, tops, whatever......then I bundle it up and put it in a basket until I have time to bother with it.

So on the days when I just absolutely must do something other than my normal (whatever that means) routine, I break into the basket and make or finish up long forgotten projects. And then I photograph it and put it up for sale. And sometimes it hangs on my rack for a while or sits on shelf somewhere before I can get to the merchandising of it. And THEN...sometimes its stuff that I completely forgot that I had!
Soon I'll also have to be sewing up more merchandise as I have some vending gigs coming up in a month or so.

But this doesnt mean that Ive put my orders on the back burner. I have to keep the flow. It is a complete juggling act. I have to continue to produce and to sell or I have to go find another job. And Id really like to try to keep this one. So I am interviewing interns again. And Im aiming to get as much done as possible this month. I cant believe its November already!

Goals

Now that Im all happy and cozy and settled in my home, I want a bigger workshop!!!!! Im never satisfied!!!! LOL!
So my goals for the rest of this year and the beginning of next is:

~Get these patterns in production somehow. I know once I make one or two, I'll be on a roll and it will get easier. Ive been working on it - you just wouldnt know it!
~Make new designs! Bellydance, Vintage, Bridal!!!!!!
~Get a bigger workshop within walking distance of home!!!
~Have workshops and teach a thing or two!!

Its been a great year and Im trying to hang in there with this economy - as we all are! Thanks to everyone who has helped!!!!!!

I had a thought, because you're having a hard time with the pattern making.
Perhaps you could make a simple tutorial, take pics from each step while you make a pair of your amazing pants, and write a brief explanation. then post it in the photos on your tribe. :)

Im looking for an intern or two. This will be an unpaid gig to start. If you can get up to speed and show me that you mean business, it could turn into a paid gig. In exchange for slave labor, I will buy you lunch, force you to hone your skills, give you some industry dirt, and stuff they dont teach you in school. Sometimes college credit can be arranged. Thanks to everyone who took advantage of my sale last month! Now Im trying to hurry and get your orders cut out, sewn up, and out the door! Please be patient with me while Im working on this (if you can!) because I still have other orders to take care of as well.

I didnt make it to Sigil. I was too sick and although my stuff was there, I really wanted to see the show and see everyone who went - I think I missed a good show! :(

Im doing the crunch to get back orders out, which is why Im so boring here on tribe.
And Im working with Christina - Black Lotus Clothing - on Ariellah's wedding dress. I cant wait to see the end result!
So if you do not have your long awaited treasures yet, I have everything cut, bundled and in various stages of getting to your closet!

What are you all doing this summer?

I also almost finished my Dicken's Faire bonnet. I might change out some of the trim - and I need to embellish it.

I guess thats not very exciting, but it is so fullfilling to check something off my To Do For Me list!

Open Toed Sandals

This past week was nuts. My industrial serger kept giving me trouble, sewing help kept getting delayed, my wrist was bugging me when cutting out fabric, but I actually got a lot done! So I'll continue in this vein - sans pain and delays - of focusing on the projects at hand and going one step at a time.

This is the week to get my straggler orders out. If I dont answer an email, its because Im trying really hard to get away from my computer. I still need to come in and post now and then, but your order is coming and nobody has been forgotten. Despite this harsh economic downturn, there is still have a long line and only two hands! Thank you for keeping me housed and fed! I hope I am in turn creating something that makes you happy!

Im still a fan of tribe, but find myself on Facebook - because I can go there for 5 minutes and make an inane comment. ( is it REALLY neccessary????? LOL!) Linen

Ive discovered it again. Last project I used with it were some drapes. I also made a wedding dress from vintage linen last year. I would like to make a suit - but it would make a great ghawazee coat for you dancers! It wrinkles, but washes really nice. It frays, but thats what an overlock or even a zig-zag stitch are for. It is amazing fabric for warmer weather!

Custom ordering Sampants on Etsy

I keep trying to guess how many sampants to make up and in what sizes. But I either have too many larger sizes or too many smaller sizes - I give up! LOL!

So I'll keep posting them up for immediate purchase, but Im offering them for custom ordering also again so that at least we can get the ball rolling, I know how much fabric to order, etc, Hope that helps!

I'll put available color swatches up soon. It seems that black is always the favorite and burgandy and olive runs a close second. And of course, stripes when I can get them.

I will not knowingly ever try to copy another designer's creation for any type of production.
I will not make a knock off of someone else's design and post online that I will custom re-create this design for you.
I will do my homework before launching a design to make sure that I am not copying someone.

You can come to me with a request and I may or may not make it for you, but it wont end up looking like a carbon copy of someone else' design anyway as I cant help but throw something of myself in the mix. And thats completely different from piracy...........

Captain Hook, Anne Bonny, Jack Sparrow pirates are very fun in theory, but reality is very hurtful, very dirty, highly immoral, and not nearly so glamorous.

Flufferie

Im still putting stuff up on etsy. http://www.kathleencrowley.etsy.com - I have some fluffie Bum Ruffles up there now. More to come - I like these because they are so versatile. I like how you can get a bustled modern victorian look with some of them! I have just realized that they can even be used as a top of sorts! No photos of that yet!

I do like making things that can be used many ways! It takes the sting out of the price tag! Take my Rattie Tattie Skirts for instance, they have three channels that can be scrunched up - therefore you can get several looks depending depending on your mood. All week Ive been wearing a long version with meloesque pants that I made for myself (dont feel right making many of those) - very sleek and sophisticated. But if I want, I can make a drapey bustle in the back or hike it up at the side. So cool!

I probably wont be making colors in Sampants any longer unless I get serious requests!
Sticking to black seems to the best choice these days and I dont have room to store large amounts of unused fabrics!

I dont have the custom order section for the Sampants any longer because I was so bogged down with orders and Im still running to catch up. But if you do want a specific color in the Sampants, I can order the fabric once you give me at least a deposit of half down.

I did stop taking deposits on custom orders for a while because it was getting so confusing to keep everything straight. Ordering online and keeping track of where all the info is can be like a puzzle. But if you really want something, we can work with a deposit of half down. I do it with bridal and corsetry as well.

Ive put a few more things up on etsy. I have several pairs of black velvet sampants, some skirts and bloomers! Things will be going up as soon as I can get them posted (wish it didnt take so long!)

Most of the sizes that I have left are xs-med. Im trying to get some larger sizes cut, but its slow going!

Decompressing

Wow - the buildup to Tribal Fest was intense! Thanks for your utmost patience while I juggled sewing orders and merchandise!

I took a few days off and straightened up my studio. Seriously - you couldnt walk through it when I got back home. The whole house exploded and my poor room mate was very sweet about the whole thing.

Ive been updating my myspace photos and page, trying to make a "fan" page (now THAT feels wierd) on facebook - because it is so damned hard to get on tribe sometimes and I dont want to lose you guys! Not sure how to go about all that. I cant even find my page on facebook now. Its all so confusing. You might find it if you search for Kathleencrowleycostumecouture. Sigh.

I lost 10 pounds this last month. I was trying to diet, but not very hard - so that kind of gives you an idea of how busy I was.

But the studio is clean and everything put away. I can start up again.

Tribal Fest was a blast, as I said. I spent 5 days with the loveliest ladies and the most talented designers/artisans - Salome's Suitcase! I had adventures , both mini and great - like trying to find a restaurant that served meat for breakfast and not just tofu - to squirt bottle fights - to bad motel rooms with bashed in air conditioners - to stinky asshole interlopers - to new friends - to adventures too crazy to discuss in polite company. A good time was had by all!

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported us and said hi and hung out. It was so bloody hot at times that I thought I would faint. But I'd do it all again in a heartbeat!

Constructive Critique

Ok, so Im sewing away today on what seems like a million sampants (but not really) and I got to thinking how everyone feels about the things I make and get worn. I usually (thank you) only hear the good stuff, and while I cant please everyone and have limited resources and funds, I wouldnt mind hearing how your things are holding up. I wouldnt mind hearing how the sizing is fitting. I would like to know if certain fabrics dont work out as well for you. I'd like to know if things are falling apart or if Ive got a construction glitch that Im unaware of. Id like to know if I should hunt for different /better materials.

Seriously. It only makes for a better product if I hear from you! Dont be shy! I can take it!

A little help please

I've been eyeing KC's pants for about 6 months now but now that I'm considering getting a pair, of course she's not taking orders right now!! Bah! Anyway, I've been browsing through pictures and I haven't seen any pics of plus size girls in her pants. This really bothers me because I'm a bigger girl and I don't want to look weird in them.

First off, I'm very short-5'1" (shortest in my dance class) and I'm quite chunky-proportionate but chunky nonetheless. I was leaning more towards the pantaloon style because I don't want my legs to look super chunky in the yoga pant style ones. My problem would be me lookiing like I'm sort of drowning in the pants because of all the lace that is involved. I hope I'm making sense. For example, short people look like they're drowning if they wear really long dresses. I don't want that look. This is where I need help determining if the pants are even right for me. How much lace is involved with these pants (length wise and spinny circumference)? My legs are about 2 feet (26 inches) long -ankle to hip and I don't want to have them look EVEN SHORTER when I'm doing spins on stage. The reason I'm asking is because I spent a nice sum of money on Melodia pants and it had the same effect. Made my legs look short and stumpy and even the shortest size they had was still too long.

Please please please help! I really want a pair of her pants.

A little quiet around here

Its a little quiet around here! I know Ive been doing taxes and catching up with orders. Ive got the longest waiters in a bag ready to ship out - and I'll sure feel better about it and so will they. And now its all the other stuff to do! Crazy! But Im gratefull! So thank you all for your support. I've been out to watch FCBD, students and friends perform with Helm and had 4 shots of something - not sure what it was but it sure tasted good - and I dont think I purchased much of it - so it must be a sign of something good coming our way. What, I have no idea of, but to celebrate whatever good is coming our way, I am giving 10% off all custom ordering til Saturday the 18th. Catch me while Im in a good mood!

Threads Magazine

For those of you who like to sew, you probably already know about Threads - the magazine for sewers. http://www.threadsmagazine.com
I dont buy it all the time, because I quit buying magazines a long time ago, except for the occasional one now and then.

But I joined their online website for fun, and that might prove interesting to some.

I was in Britex yesterday looking for tassels and picked up the latest issue with the Threads Fitting DVD Series Preview. I watched it last night to see if it would be worth buying........and I had to say that it MIGHT be good for me to purchase, but I didnt find anything new in the preview.
However, I thought that it could be a good tool for those who sew, but dont do it professionaly and want their costumes and clothing to look nice, fit right - and not homemade (unless thats the look you are going for.....)

It is a nice package of dvd's. The editors made this and they are a bit awkward in front of the camera and conservative in thier aproach, but
They explain things very well. It takes you through how to make a commercial pattern fit you. There are probably lots of dvds out there, but since I like this mag, I thought I would pass this on. They have a sale right now on the whole package.

Stock now up on Etsy

I'm starting to post my left over stock up on etsy. So check in and see if there is anything you cant live without.

I'll have my new black cotton lycra double tiered Sampants up soon. (that was a mouthful)

I'll be making more if you dont see your size, so check in when you get a chance. I wore them a lot when I out on the road, and I loved them!

I also will be posting my new shorter version of the Fluffie Rufflie Pantaloons. They became my staple wear as well - with a dress over the last few weeks or so. Three tiers of fluffie goodness! I'll also be making more of those.

There is a shorter version of the Fluffie Rufflie Dance Pants - I call em the Jessiepant because Jessie who used to be in FCBD got em first! Im making a few soon! And hopefully, I'll have plenty to choose from at Tribal Fest!

And last but not least, Ive got my skirt pattern figured out and I'll have a couple versions of that coming out.

I was hoping to have my little pattern line together for sale, but the cost of producing these is too prohibitive for me lately. I have not given up on the idea, but cant figure out how to make it costworthy for us all yet. If anyone knows anything about this process and can give me some info. I'd be most grateful!!

Custom Order Moratorium

Since Im vending twice this month and trying to get all the rest of my backorders out, I'm going to stop taking online custom orders for a little while.
On top of moving, I got that gnarly flu. Honestly, the fun never stops! But I feel better now, Ive got extra hands coming in after Rakkasah West and we are ReStrucTuring!

Oh, The Joy!!!!!!!!

So if we already talked about having something made, I'll honor that if you want to go ahead. I just have to step back and work on whats in front of me for a while. I'll take orders til tomorrow (thursday the 5th) evening, and then we'll see how it goes. It might be a couple weeks or more. Just have to slow down a bit! I wont have email for maybe a week unless I can borrow a laptop.

So Christina of Black Lotus Clothing and I are loading up her R.V. and heading down south to Gothla and then going on a Fabric Hunting Adventure. I cant wait! My sources seem to be drying up around here and I need to broaden my horizons. Plus............LA Garment District...........heaven on earth!

On Friday my order arrived - I practically knocked the delivery guy to the floor in my enthusiasm as I noticed the US Postal Service Fluffy Rufflies-sized package he was carrying along with several large boxes. Poor guy. The Hafla was last night and they were heading to my work address so you can imagine I had almost given up...but there they were, the most fantastic pair of pants I have ever owned.

Kathleen thanks for getting my order to me on time for the show. You wouldn't believe how many compliments I had on them. They are comfortable, long enough, well made and soooo pretty.

How Do Sampants Fit Curvier Women?

So I've been eyeballing these pants for like, four months now. I'm seeing a pair that SHOULD fit around the hips but the pic on the mannequin just looks so tiny. I have a bubble butt and I'm wondering just how stretchy these are, 'cause I don't want to push it, RE: get the encased sausage look.

I want these pants so bad though. *whimper*

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In Tough Times..........

Everyone should dance or do something that they truely love and that keeps their spirits up.
Im telling myself this as well.
Because even though I dont dance much anymore in public,
when I do dance, I feel better and the world seems like
A better place.

And besides...... the world actually needs to be entertained right now.
And stunned silly with wonder.
People need to forget their troubles
Even if for just a short time.
It soothes the angry beast within.
And inspires.

In general, most people dont see a lot of Bellydance
Or works of art
On a day to day basis - even though the world is getting smaller
For us all.
It is really our duty to make the world a better place
And create something lovely
Or interesting
Or usefull
Or entertaining.
Even if its just for a moment.

So dont stop doing what you are doing!

Garter shorts length

The sam pants on curvier girls question reminded me to ask about how the garter shorts fit girls with enormous butts like mine.

I love my butt...but sometimes it makes it hard to find stuff that fits right (28-25-42, I'm an extra small up top and large/xl on bottom). I'm pretty sure I need a large. but how long are the larges? Where my pants sit its about 33in, from there if I measure to a reasonable length its like 14-15inches so my butt doesnt show. Do I need to get some custom ones?

It has turned into a crazy week

First of all, Im moving into a cute, charming little flat in the Mission with a good friend and I'll even have a little dog to play with! So the weight of looking for a new home has lifted off my shoulders. And then my phone flew out of my hands and died a terrible death. And then there is a problem with my paypal account at the moment which I am pulling out my hair to get fixed. Should be fixed soon. And I just pulled most of my things out of my etsy shop because I'll be selling it at this upcoming Edwardian Ball. Lots of prep and packing to do! I'll have new things up again soon!

I also need a breather because Im focusing on getting things out and I need to pack - so Im answering emails, but not taking any new orders for a few days. It all hits at once!

Off to a great start for the New Year, though!

What article of clothing in your wardrobe gets you the most attention?

For me, it would be a red leather trench coat from the 70's that Anne Lemur, formerly of FatChanceBellyDance, gave me long ago.

Ive worn it everywhere and it always turns heads. I've gotten negative attention in it as well. I went to a party out in the boonies of Ireland and this girl tried to punch me out. But I was bigger than her and would have none of it - she didnt get very far. Usually people just stare. Its a very red coat!

Cardiac Arrest

I swear I almost died of joy upon trying on my new fluffie rufflie pantaloons. Kathleen has been the sweetest seamstress I've ever worked with, and painstakingly picked out fabrics to match my steam-punk themed wedding! Yup, these pants are going to the reception! The matching lacey sleevelets are sooooo yummy! I stood in my bathroom at work trying them on for way too long; I just couldn't bear to take them off!

If any of you were like me and sitting on the fence not sure whether or not to spend monies on such luxury... JUST DO IT! I can't imagine ever buying another pair of Melodias again when I can own and wear my own piece of custom art!!

I wish I was in SF to give you a hug Kathleen!!

I can Breathe Now!

Whew! I just got the last of my Xmas orders and stuff out to the post office! Any last minute stragglers will or can be sent out overnight on Monday and now Im going to take the rest of the day off to get caught up on admin and work on on some backorder touch ups. Maybe even go to bed early for a change.

All back orders will be done (or are done waiting for my attention) on monday or tuesday.

The rest of the month - and there isnt much left of it, is there, will mainly be getting organized and recovering from Christmas. I really wish we didnt have to stress out at this time of the year , because arent we actually supposed to be hibernating? Sitting in a cave in front of a huge roaring fire?

Anyway, since Im pretty caught up with the back order situation, I can take more orders. Its slow right now as always and I'll be taking advantage of this to be doing custom work for the Edwardian Ball and make new things that Ive been wanting to work on. Things like those elusive tops, skirt, patterns........things I talk about but cant get to. Corsets, suits, ball gowns, oh my!

I want to make myself a new coat and some new things to wear because Im walking around looking like a rag picker's wife.

I have committed myself to vending next year. For reals. I mean it.

I'll post dates as they come along.

And now Im on a serious hunt for a new live/work space. To live by myself or share with the right person/persons. Id like to stay in sf, but I'm open now to other areas as well. I'll have to have a car again if I leave this town - but it is only here that Ive ever had problems with them. Let me know if you hear or know of something!

Coping with the Holidaze?

Is everyone coping or actually enjoying the holidaze this year?

I almost have all my xmas and backorders out now. The rest will be out on Monday and Im sure everything will arrive on time. The post office just isnt as busy this year, which is good for anything last minute that needs to go out!

Im house sitting above where I work right now, so Im in heaven. I can roll out of bed, have coffee, wake up, and get to work. I have gotten so much more done this week than I have in a long time. Everyone keep their fingers crossed for me that I can find a live/work situation in this area soon that is actually affordable. (dont all laugh at once). It COULD happen!

I thought I had found one, I looked at it twice, they seemed to like me and my friend, we started negotiating - it was way cool- an old saloon from 1887- and then they took it off the market and offered to us at over three times what they had previously listed it as. My theory was that they had refinanced with one of those balloon loans that have scoured our nation and are heading towards foreclosure. So that was a very wierd experiance and a total waste of my time!

But Im not as stressed now, am going to throw something together for a Marie Antoinette Xmas party tomorrow night and then get everything else shipped on Monday morning.

If you feel bad because someone got thier order ahead of yours, please be patient with me! I just had to totally re do someones' order because as I was inspecting it before shipping, I noticed all the stitches were popping - bad thread. I caught the problem and so no disaster, but its always something. And any number of a bazillion reasons could be the culpret in any kind of delay.

I always say that wait time is between 2 - 3 months for custom work. Sometimes it can be quicker if we have a deadline and sometimes it can be longer if I simply dont like how it looked when I was done and decided to make changes. You will be happier in the end if that was the case. It is happening right now!

So please email me with questions!

No I would like my sampants and hip wrap to be in the same matching brown velvet. I guess there's not much chance of this arriving by the 19th Dec now is it? Never mind. Not meant to be. I'll just love em more when I get them!

Happy Holidaze Everyone!

I hope everyone in the US had a nice Thanksgiving! While I dont really celebrate this holiday because I always feel so bad about how we as a people actually formed this country and mistreated its original citizens, Ive come to peace with that and try to just be thankful for what I have here and now.

I went up to Seattle and spent a few days with my son, Haydn. We often fight for a few hours and then have a good time, but this time, there was no fighting, we got along, we respected each others space and opinions. We baked pies and watched Rob Zombie movies, drank shots, drove around and talked, hung out with his friends and their families and had a great time. I really hated to come back. But I was so grateful that I have a wonderful son. He's single right now, ladies - and he's a great guy! (hope he doesnt kill me now!)

So Im on a mission to get everything shipped by Dec. 11th. Those who have been waiting will hopefully be extatic (sp) when they get their packages!

I have a few new things to post up on etsy today or tomorrow - so keep watching! There is no more of this fabric and it is all stripes and lace.

Part of this month and January I will be mostly working on custom work not related to belly dance - this is my slow time anyway, so I work on costumes, evening wear, suits, corsets, whatever Ive got the time for. Im still trying to finish my Dickens outfit and Ive got an 18th century gown to make for my friend Matts' Marie Antoinette Xmas party. Will I get it all done? I have to!

So thats what Im up to. All Xmas orders have to be shipped by the 11th - with a window of a few days after that - so my fingers are now flying and my trusty fairie helpers shall don their golden thimbles. This week coming up will be insane, so I'll get to your emails and inquireys as fast as I can. If I dont answer right away.............Im on a mission!

Vacation

I'll be out of town to visit my son in Seattle from nov. 25 - 28th!
I'll have some computer access at his house, but we are taking a road trip up to Canada for a day or two.
Yay!
Needless to say, I'll be shipping some things on monday, I can still take orders and answer questions, but I wont be sewing!
And if I dont get right back to you, Have a wonderfull hoilday (you in the U.S.) and I'll get back to you asap!!!!!!

how to wear SamPants

I'm so excited that I ordered my first pair of Sampants! I've seen pictures of some people wearing them and I see that they are mostly worn with higher boots (perfect since I have so many pairs of boots). How else has anyone worn them? How do you ladies like to accessorize them?
