Re: Vitamin pills 'increase risk of early death'
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 11:01 PMI don't believe these findings. As fas as reports with statistics, one can find these supporting just about any theory one has on health issues.
While vitamins shouldn't be a substitute for healthy eating, I believe that vitamin supplementation combined with a balanced diet including plenty of fresh vegetables and some fruit would help someone live longer, or live about the same number of years but be healthier in the later years of their life than they would without the extra vitamins. -

Re: Vitamin pills 'increase risk of early death'
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 8:18 AMIt's well known you can overdose on vitamins. My ex was taking hugh doses of vitamins for a while and was getting "niacin flush". Some of these vitamin junkies describe it as being okay and proof it's working, but in reality it is a symptom of anaphylaxis, which is a terrible thing to be doing to yourself. If you go beet red and have shortness of breath eating lobster, most people will tell you to stop eating lobster. Not the vitamin junkies.

The actual question here is whether chronic overdosing will result in a shorter lifespan. Now, the niacin will tell you you took too much, but other vitamins dont, and since this habit is still young we really dont know what 70 years of overdosing will do to a person. -

Re: Vitamin pills 'increase risk of early death'
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:22 AMThe actual question may very well be that high potency vitamin supplementation may contribute to early death, but the headline is "Vitamin pills 'increase risk of early death'. There is no need to take high doses of vitamins. Yes, there are some vitamins that can be overdosed on. It's a good idea for those who take vitamins to read up on what the proper levels should be. And read from more than one source, because there are those who recommend very high doses for health.
I still say taking vitamins actually increases health in old age, and throughout ones life. But in moderation. There is no need to take so much niacin to get a niacin flush. Every multi-vitamin has niacin in it, it is one of the B vitamins.
