You actually need it milled in order to receive any nutritional benefit from it. You can use a coffee grinder to mill it and then add it to foods. Once it is milled the nutritional value decreases over time, so don't do a massive amount to stock up on, do what you need for a few days only and store it in the fridge.

If your eating them to get to the omega oils inside you just have to chew *really* well.... if the hulls aren't broken your body can't access the good stuff inside so they exit looking just as they entered - as the previous poster mentioned you could also mill them, but it's not entirely necessary. If you're eating them for their effect on being regular/softening stools, then just pour a bit of water (and honey or agave) on them & let them soak for a few minutes until the liquid is gooey then chow down. When I lived in the desert I used to eat flax seed porridge for breakfast all the time cuz it was easy, quick, and tasted good.... even my kids will eat it!
